 And also since they're open back not only does the sound get out but sound also gets in so the ambient sound of your environment will play a factor in your music or whatever you're listening to. But yeah overall everything sounds really punchy and rich and that all makes these a great intro, a great first pair of open back headphones especially thanks to the price. These are all over the internet at sub $100. And it's worth noting that these also have a slightly less expensive little brother called the SR60E

 No real cushion here, but then again they are pretty lightweight so they're comfortable without a huge cushion. And the foam pads on the headphones themselves are removable and I checked on Amazon there are third party foam pads that you can buy or even leather ones that are softer or thicker or even sound different. But these stock foam ones are on ear so they just rest on your ear and sound good. And like I said this is a great first pair of open back headphones for all the reasons described in that explain video

 The sound stage is wide, the sound is detailed and more natural and actually think a tiny bit more balanced than those SR80i's. The sound leak actually not as bad as I remember so they're not like mini speakers on your head or anything but if someone's sitting near you they'll definitely be able to hear what you're listening to. Grado SR80e: Dope Budget Headphones!

 When I listened to them for the first time I was greeted by warm forward sounding mids with the promised sparkly treble. Plus they have that simple retro aesthetic, though that may be an acquired taste.

I was recommended Grado SR80e as my first introduction to audiopile headphones. Of course coming from $30 Sony cans anything would be an upgrade. I adore my Grados with the big g cush pads.  I find the wide open sound they produce to be particularly excellent for classical/orchestral music. This genre really takes advantage of the present (but never overemphasized bass), forward mids and sparkly highs that are all part of the Grados house sound. 

I generally like them with jazz as well, though the solo sax and trumpet parts can be a bit piercing on some recording, others are about perfect. Plucked bass has such a wonderful texture on these that really shines through without any bloat. 

A lot of people love rock music on Grados.  For me, this is much more recording dependant. Really well recorded classic rock (late Beatles, pink floyd, steely dan, dire straights, Eric clapton etc) is satisfying on them.  That's a lot of the rock music I listen to.  But a lot of heavier stuff like Zeppelin or Sabbath  needs a bit more bass oomph than the Grados offer.  

I can totally understand why people hate them....but for so much of what I listen to I think they are great.  Definitely love em or hate em headphones....I just love em with some recordings and hate em with others.  I love much more than I hate though. 

I also think every grado owner owes it to themselves to get at least a couple different kinds of pads.  

The s-cush pads (flat pads that come on the 60 and 80). Really tame the treble and increase the bass. They make them more forgiving to poor recordings, but narrow the sound stage quite a bit as well.  They are a nice alternative to have. Comfort is ok after you wash the pads with soap and water a couple times to soften them up.

The G-cush pads (big bowls on the higher end models) are what I described above. Open and airy.  Bigger soundstage. A bit lighter on bass.   These are my preference for most recordings. Also most comfortable. 

The L-cush pads (donut shaped on the sr 125+  in the prestige series and the reference series) are my least favorite. I hear very little difference between them and the G-cush...but they are by far the worst on comfort. I rarely use these.

I hate the fact that I've only heard 1 pair of grados(sr125's) and they were absolutely horrible imo. I really want to hear one of the higher end ones at some point, I always thought they were some of the best looking headphones. Maybe I'll swallow the 500€ price of the Hemp at some point, supposedly that one is tuned more "consumer friendly".

My first decent headphones were SR80's, still going strong, although I now have a pair of beautiful HS2's. Perfect for quite room! I also have Final Audio Pandora Hope 6's for when the room is too noisy. All driven by a Cord Mojo with Poly.

Rarely see Grados here

 Make sure your listening environment is quiet, inside and outside of your head, however you do that, and then put on Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer Group Live circa 1977.

 But the reproduction of sound from Koss back then, when run through the warmth of tube amplifiers from a good turntable was exceptional, as are these headphones from family-owned Grado Labs. When properly equalized to meet the sensibility of today's recording dynamics (although you won't have to do much for your Boston album) the sound quality is superior, especially for the $100 you'll have to throw on the table. They are surprisingly lightweight once adjusted (and don't worry about bending the head band) and quite comfortable for hours of listening. Younger ears no doubt will think them a little too weird compared to what's coming out of today's studios, but audiophiles with a few miles on their shoes will love 'em

Compared to other headphones, these handmade instruments represent perfectly (to me, at least) the best of the philosophy of sound reproduction from past years - and I do mean past years. My first set of quality cans was from Koss in 1978, for which I paid somewhere around $35 - a hefty sum in those days. Forward into the past....

 Very. Impressive.  Unfortunately, when using an IOS device, playing this profile with even high end earbuds like the UE Triple Fis, the sound will be tinny, so toggling between the two modes by way of a shortcut would be a nice bonus, but as it stands I have to go deep into the preferences to change this setting. Therefore, I would only recommend these headphones if you intend to use them in a stationary location

 Most people who listen to popular music are generally accustomed to excessive bass. If that is the sort of listener that you are, then these headphones are for you because once you get the SR80s tuned properly, the sound these cans deliver is very impressive. Very. Impressive

 (I always have a sad chuckle when some punk is walking the streets with ghetto blaster at maximum volume and the sound is atrocious- little does he know that what people are annoyed by is not the volume, but the distortion! Plus he's ruining his equipment.)  Using the SR80e with a mobile device is a case where an external headphone amplifier would be highly desirable, if not required, so this is a bit of an ask. I have not had a lot of success with the in-line amplifiers designed to run off of the device's power (specifically the Lightning-DAC-and-amplifier combos that you can buy to replace the dongle that Apple ships with their new iPhones) where I played recordings which have very high amplitude levels. For these recordings, the distortion is intolerable even though records at a nominal recording level sound great

Great bass response at the expense of fidelity

 The only reason I gave this a four star rating is because pf the build quality. People complain about the headband, that it digs into their head. I have no such issue. My problem is that I wear glasses and the arm of the glasses makes a pressure point and hurts my ears if I have the headphones on for ~45 minutes

 The bass is pronounced rather than "enhanced" like, say my friend's Beats. If you want headphones with bass that will physically rattle your headphones loose, don't buy these. They are accurate to a real speaker, not a sub-woofer. The midrange? Just as good as the bass and treble

 The plastic is way too fat to fit in the "Fancy" carved hole. Seems odd to get a 1/8" to 1/8" adapter, but you will need it. The cord, now THAT is the disappointment, and the reason for the four star rating. The main section of the cord is (just shy of) 1/4" thick

The Sony MDR-7506 are the best headphones for recording that we've tested. These headphones have a closed-back design, which helps lower the risk of your audio bleeding into a recording. They also have a decently comfortable fit that's well-built.

These retro over-ears deliver audio consistently across reseats and have a neutral sound profile. Although they have a touch of extra thump, rumble, and boom to their sound, it doesn't overwhelm vocals and lead instruments. The mid-range is very flat, so they're accurately reproduced. Their coiled audio cable also helps prevent tangles if you like to move around the studio.

Unfortunately, they struggle to block out ambient noise like ambient chatter. Their build also feels plasticky and cheap, so they can make a creaking sound when you put them on your head. However, if you don't mind their build, they offer a well-balanced sound suitable for recording.
