 So now that I have taken this backpack in pretty much every single condition you can imagine. Seriously, I've dragged this thing through storms, big and small. I've used it on day hikes, wild camps, and even five-day free hikes. Having done all of that, I now feel super confident that I can give you a really well informed, in-depth review of this item

 It is unbelievably comfortable to wear. I guess it is missing some of the extra load shifting straps that you'd find on a typical hiking backpack, which is a shame, but it's absolutely fine for me. I haven't really noticed much of a difference. To be honest, I didn't really think that the extra padding kind of makes up for that in my eyes

1 YEAR with the Gossamer Gear G4-20 Ultralight backpack My Review

I'm in good enough shape now that I'm never in horrible pain after hiking, just a little sore depending on the terrain. I've been running a Crown2 60 with a ~15lb base, but feel like it's time to downsize my pack as I've honed in my setup more and really not filling it out. I've been eyeing up a Gossamer g4-20 as it'd be roughly 10oz lighter, and seemingly easier to move more swiftly with.

 If I'm aiming for a total pathway dove 22 or 23 pounds and I've already got 12 pounds of consumables, That means my base weight needs to be 11 pounds or under. so that I'm starting off the trip in a really comfortable fashion. for me, I'm in that category And so this ended up working really well for me this spring, even on some of those colder trips where I was carrying some extra clothing and stuff like that because you know quickly you start drinking your water and eating your food and your weight goes down. But actually I did reach out to their customer service early on after my first trip with this pack and asked for some advice on how to get the pack to fit better and how to get a little bit more comfort on trail

 during the week. you also get to see a lot of the projects and they sort of make your own gear. Stuff that happens that doesn't always make it onto the channel. Today we are reviewing the Gossamer Gear G 420 and I am excited to share this backpack with you I Picked this up earlier this spring and I have been hiking with it all spring long I Feel like I'm in a good position to help you understand whether or not this backpack makes sense for you

 One thing I don't like about this though is that it's a single strap that runs from the front to the back. I Also them a little concern on the stress it puts on this tab here I don't know if that's possible to see, but I feel like that's a lot of stress on that single point so maybe some additional reinforcement there or something to beefing that up a little bit just because a lot of times this is getting cranked down on. and I do have another pack that has a split a split strap that I feel like would work better for a bear canister or something like that. So just minor

GOSSAMER GEAR G4-20 Ultralight Backpack Review || BUGTENT outside

 I love Gossamer Gear. A lot of my gear is Gossamer Gear. This pack here is the Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 liter pack that you will remember that I used for my entire through hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2019. Fast forward to 2020

 Be sure to check them out and give Gossamer Gear some love. I love using their gear and I hope you guys got a little bit of information from this video about both of these packs. I will go ahead and put the price of both packs right here, so that way you can see the difference in price as well so that can be something you can take into account. So go ahead and look down here in the information of this video and check out Gossamer Gear on their website

3 ounces based on the pack that you buy with the hip belt associated. So the small which is what I have is 29 ounces. A large is going to be 33.3 ounces I believe the G420 based on its three sizes Small, Medium, and large can range anywhere from 23 to 26 ounces so this is a little bit lighter and also this carries more weight as this does not carry so it's just going to depend on what you need and what you're looking for out of a pack

 The front of the pack instead of having a zipper pocket along the top is now along the front where I keep my hand sanitizer and my bug spray and stuff like that. It has some extra straps for like bear canisters, but you'll notice these packs are very similar. This also has the little hoops so you can attach a um, elastic strap just like on this pack that I have so let's talk about choosing one over the other. A pro to this is it is larger

Review and Comparison of Gossamer Gear G4-20 & Mariposa Packs

 The folks at Gossamer Gear really know what they're doing putting on the pack. The hip belt adjusts with a center pull design and the sternum strap has some elastic built in as well as a whistle. Overall, the pack fits wonderfully. um, did I mention it's really blue? There's ample padding everywhere, and when packed and compressed properly, it carries really well

 The only other true annoyance are the compression straps on the side. They don't extend down far enough for my liking, which often led to a rather saggy feeling bag when at lower capacities. I appreciate that there are more points for attachment on the side with the water bottle pocket, but on the other side the extra attachment points would cover up the top of the tall pocket, making it impractical to use I mentioned. I'm also not a huge fan of the right mesh hip belt pocket, and although I fixed that easily, it's still a confusing default addition to this pack

 large with a silky smooth waterproof zipper, and most importantly, it can be closed with one hand. The other side is more of a mixed bag for me with a low profile stretch mesh pocket. I found the best use case was to hold my phone, and it does this remarkably well. When the hip belt is curved, it's quite secure

 If you size up the torso, the hip belt size also increases, making the fit for tall but thin frame people a bit difficult. I originally used the medium because I have a belt size of 29 inches, but after 40 wonderful miles on the Superior Trail, I realized I was just barely too tall for it. So I bought the large and surprisingly, I found the hip belt actually fit just fine. Although I'd say anyone with a solid 27 inch waist is probably going to be pushing the limits here, I got lucky

 For example, on my Sierra trip, I was carrying basically a full size tripod and having this kind of compression would also help me to secure that tripod against the pack, stops the flapping around and just make everything more stable. You do have this compression on both sides, but it's easily removable if you do want to do that. Next up is this front zippered pocket here and this is something slightly know from Gossamer Gear. With their traditional clothes and closure method, they have like a zipper on top that you can stash stuff in and they've basically kind of repositioned this onto the front of the pack

 Let's dive into the features of the pack itself. The main compartment, as you would expect, is a very simple affair. There's no pockets at all inside whatsoever. There's no sleeve for a water bladder, which I don't think is an issue because I don't think most people are using water bladders out on the trail anymore

 On the left hand side, they go with a traditional zippered pocket. It's really big, it fits a good size camera, electronic snacks, what-have-you and it uses a waterproof zipper. but then on the right hand side that Gossamer Giri decided to go with a mesh kind of stretchy pocket first. I Was kind of intrigued by the design, but in reality I don't like it I threw a couple of granola bars in there to test their and just to have easy access to while I was hiking

Once again, against relentless competition from other brands, the Gossamer Gear Mariposa holds its place at the top of the fleet. This pack balances comfort with an emphasis on lightweight design in a way that is unparalleled. The feature set is thoughtful and useful but not overkill. It provides plenty of external-carry options without feeling weighed down by superfluous bells and whistles. The Mariposa had our favorite stretchy back mesh pocket, which was large enough to store extra layers, snacks, and other items we wanted to quickly access. It fits a bear canister and can carry a heavy load but can also be compressed to comfortably carry a smaller load. The fabrics used in its design are durable and lightweight; miles of bushwacking and talus-crossing hardly left a scratch. 
Marketed as a 60-liter pack, the Mariposa can carry up to 64 liters when stuffed to the brim. For some, this may feel like too much room for an ultralight pack, as the more room you have, the more you may end up filling with unnecessary gear. It isn't the lightest in our review, though its 2.5-pound total weight and 14g/L weight-to-volume ratio are impressive. Plus, its slightly heavier weight added a level of comfort that was hard to beat.

Their largest capacity hauler, the Mariposa 60, is one of our go-tos for everything from quick overnights to week-long missions. Despite the sub-2-pound build (for the medium frame and hipbelt), it offers 60 liters of capacity spread out between a main compartment and seven exterior pockets, and is impressively supportive for loads up to 35 pounds (we took it right up to the limit). What’s more, the feature set is clearly designed by experienced thru-hikers: You get a tall side pocket to stash a tent or shelter, two pockets on the right side for water bottles and a filter, a stretchy rear pocket that offers quick access to essentials, large hipbelt pockets, and a bear-canister-compatible main compartment. Uniquely, the removable foam backpanel is located on the outside of the pack for easy accessibility and doubles as a great sit pad for trail-side breaks and camp life.

The Mariposa joins the Circuit above as one of the most popular cottage-brand UL packs on the trail. But while the Gossamer Gear is the clear winner in terms of weight, it falls short of the ULA in a few key ways: First off, the fabric is noticeably thinner, which will be of little concern to most recreational hikers (our pack has held up well to general use and abuse) but noticeable for those who spend months of each year on the trail. Further, the Mariposa offers far less fit customization—you get your pick of three torso and hipbelt sizes, compared to the Circuit’s larger set of offerings (including two styles of shoulder straps). It helps me stand up straighter when I'm hiking and It also gives me some breathability as you can see a lot of my back is exposed You know can slip my hand through how that really hurt But yeah That's just how I like to wear the pack everything's just tight enough to where the pack doesn't bounce around and move around too much But you know super comfortable pack worn it for hours and hours on end But yeah another advantage to having super loose straps is When my shoulders get tired and start hurting I can just slip my arms in Keep my hands like this takes the weight off my shoulders. Let's gives my arms a rest That magnetic Clip makes it super easy and convenient, you know, if I need water just keeps the tube right here and That water bottle holder also makes it easier to get water versus trying to like have a Try and reach back here that just that hurts a lot So I just keep this right here But yeah, that's that's me with the bag That's that's me with the pack again

So Let's head back inside because it's freezing out, you know, give you my thoughts and opinions on it So I've owned this pack for a year and a half Probably got anywhere from a couple to a few hundred miles into it Mostly day hikes to get a good workout in but also lots of overnight trips and weekend trips as well It's a great pack very comfortable Has never caused me any pain There's lots of space inside and I really like all the pockets For quick and easy access and allowing me to organize everything how I want if the dog does go with me on a trip There's still plenty of room left over which makes it easier to add all of his stuff as well Packs got no signs of wear and tear like none Maybe few dirt stains and the occasional loose thread, but that's easily fixed with a lighter The shoulder straps and hip belt cushioning still like new no issues there The only gripe I could think of is that none of the pack material is waterproof, but very few packs have that feature I would definitely buy this pack again

Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 - Long Longterm Review

 I was a little skeptical about this pad that they have in the back of the pack here but it was surprisingly comfortable and breathable. So I used Gossamer Gear's optional cell phone pocket and it's this little nylon pocket. It's padded. It velcros right to the shoulder strap and it worked really well to keep my phone out of the water and protected

 It got a little deeper than what I anticipated because I'm wet all the way up to my chest strap. The chest strap has this piece of elastic right here which makes the strap pretty comfortable, allows a little bit of flex there. The hip strap has this nice plastic clip, very sturdy, easy enough to adjust with these straps. It has two hip pockets there, very nice for carrying things like bug spray or your pocket knife

 There's another pocket on the top here. On the back there's this mesh pocket which was great for carrying my water shoes because I knew that they would dry out easily inside the mesh pocket so there's plenty of storage on the outside of this pack. On the bottom there are these two plastic clips that are made for carrying trekking poles and there's also this lashing loop which is made for carrying something like an ice axe. There are two adjustable straps with clips on this side and on this side so you just undo those two clips

 It's a 60 liter backpack from Gossamer Gear and I was able to use it this past weekend on a backpacking trip in north Georgia. I did 3 days and 25 miles and I have to say I was really, really impressed with this pack. The weight in the pack, it really carried well. Most of the packs that I've tried after, you know, 15, 20 miles, it starts to really wear on your hips
