This backpack by Osprey is very well made but keep in mind this is a laptop backpack. It’s not going to take a lot and I am quite disappointed with the size. It’s long but thin. Zipper doesn’t go all around because of the bottle pocket will not allow for this

 And then they went to a naming convention where the Gr1 now has two sizes, the 21 liter and the 26 liters. So so what I'm gonna cover today for the Gr1 specifically is the fit. What size works best for you? Which one should you consider the function and packing all the different ways you can use this bag? Let's get into it. The Gr1 right up front and center

GORUCK GR1: Fit, Function, Packing in EVERY Mode - 6 YEAR REVIEW

 If you're at all familiar with the backpack space, then you'll know of Goruck's for now. Having spent some time with the Gr1 for ourselves, we'll be the first to tell you the bag doesn't disappoint. However, it's important to keep your expectations realistic. The Gr1 isn't abounding with organizational provisions, and it won't wow you with a bunch of fancy bells and whistles

 Because it's designed to double as a rucking bag, the Jr1 boasts some of the beefiest straps you'll find on a backpack. Where most packs typically come with some plushy mesh padding on their straps, the Gr1 instead sports two layers of dense foam, one to provide structure and the other to add a bit of comfort. They're pretty stiff when you first get the bag, but they'll break in more and more with continued use. It's worth noting, though the straps are pretty coarse

 However, it also makes the pocket into something of a bottomless black hole. Not a deal breaker by any means, just something to consider if you're packing and unpacking on the move. Because it's designed to double as a rucking bag, the Jr1 boasts some of the beefiest straps you'll find on a backpack.  However, it's considerably more supportive, especially when combined with the interior frame sheet on body. It's completely absent of any hot spots whatsoever. No matter how much weight you're carrying, just be sure to check your size. Our tester stands a solid 511, and while the 21 liter makes for a great fit, the larger 26 liter model can be a bit long depending on the size of your torso

This is also very comfortable when worn, as the shoulder straps and back of the bag are very well-padded.  • Durability: As noted, this is well-padded and made of a solid polyester fabric material. Not a full zip-around, but great for intraday use

 I imagine the carabiner on the right shoulder strap could come in handy to secure it to a chair or stroller when out in public and not wearing it on my back.

 I think this is due to the how little this protrudes away from your back, and the ridged foam back panel that gives it a nice flat surface that comfortably rests on your back. (pic of empty backpack staying flat when I’m holding it up horizontally) Photos are for size and volume. I do not have the best lighting, and the backpack looks much nicer in person. Also, in most photos, I left the water bottles in the outer pocket, which gives makes the backpack look uncharacteristically lumpy

  For the sake of this review and photos, I tried to fill the bag up to show what can fit. Even then, it was still very comfortable, definitely did not feel the weight like I would when using any other backpack I own. 4.5 stars, Great day bag / diaper bag

Great build quality, looks nice, minimal and slim despite the fact that it fits way more than it looks like it does. Great laptop and secondary laptop/iPad sleeve inside. Water resistant material, great ergonomics and spaces/pockets inside. Feels good on the back too

 The only organization is via an (included) laptop sleeve, however it is fairly bulky and adds unnecessary weight. In addition, even holding just my keys + sunglasses+ badge, the outside mini pocket would jut out and look bad. The pack width adjustment straps are poorly designed and only add to the jutting out effect if you have literally anything in the outside pocket. Would probably make an okay daypack, however as a commuting pack it does not get the job done nearly as well as other options

 It's actually very well padded here and it's got this kind of microfiber lining on the back. Here is where we have our laptop compartment which also has a Juror Flex buckle just to secure your gear. This is my 13 inch MacBook Now this compartment can fit up to a 15 inch laptop and as you can see, there's heaps of space for a 15-inch laptop there. you can clip that shirt and keep the alert top secure

 The third and last compartment is the biggest compartment and here is where you're going to be putting most of your bigger items: your laptop, your tablet, tech pouch, things like that inside the main cavity. I Just have my pick Design Tech pouch here and then I Also have a little notebook inside the padded tablet sleeve here. It's actually very well padded here and it's got this kind of microfiber lining on the back. Here is where we have our laptop compartment which also has a Juror Flex buckle just to secure your gear

 This is my 13 inch MacBook Now this compartment can fit up to a 15 inch laptop and as you can see, there's heaps of space for a 15-inch laptop there. you can clip that shirt and keep the alert top secure. As well as I mentioned earlier, this bag can also accommodate a hydration bladder. So in this compartment where you would put your laptop if you're taking this back for a hike, maybe you can put inside a hydration bladder instead and simply port the hydration tube through this little hole here which goes to the back of the bag and then feed your hydration tube through one of these accessory loops and then you have easy access to water

 you also have the option of tightening up your strap slack with this elastic webbing here, so all of this can be tidied up with that elastic webbing if you have it fully compressed like this. As an added bonus, if you have a taller or bigger item inside your water bottle pocket say for instance, it's a taller water bottle or it's a thermos or a yoga mat. Whatever it is, you can actually use the compression strap to help stabilize that load in your pack, so there's a little tip fee. One of them is hidden behind this little slit

A Great Mid-Sized Bag - The Patagonia Refugio Backpack

I'm six feet tall, it didn't fit my frame. The cross-chest strap, for instance, which can be easily adjusted in a range of slots along the shoulder straps, was far too high to be used. The shoulder straps were thin and the padded portion short. I think the accommodation of a hydration bag gave me the impression that this pack would be okay for a long and somewhat rigorous day hike, but it wasn't

Beautiful, but somewhat flimsy and too short.

 However, now they've also included this removable laptop sleeve. It's uh, they call it their caddy, which is meant to have not only the laptop, but also, uh, some organization for other tech items that you might want to have with you. So it has this sort of mesh zippered compartment, which is meant to replace the organizational compartment that used to be on the Refugio. They had a larger kind of admin area on the front

 This reminds me of the top quick access pockets that I've loved on bags from companies such as Mystery Ranch or Air. So something you can reach down when the bag is next to you and you're sitting down. you can grab it easily and this also offers a pretty decent amount of volume if you have bulkier accessories or pouches that you want to get to chargers. Maybe some headphones might be able to squeeze in here depending on the model, so I really like the flexibility that's offered there

 This sleeve is meant to hold up to a 15 or 16 inch laptop, especially on the 30 liter version of the bag. I believe you can use that taller device, but at least 15 inches will work comfortably in both bags, but the design of the two sleeves is slightly different. Not a huge difference, but you have more organization on the sleeve that's provided with the 30 liter bag, so on the 26 liter, it just have one mesh zipper compartment. On the 30 liter sleeve, you have a few slip pockets on the top, mesh slip pockets that are going to give you some extra organization for dongles for cables, maybe for your airpods, and then you again have the mesh zipper compartment, which may be a good spot to hold your laptop, charger, your mouse

 Not much difference between the two compartments. I would say that the flap on the 30 liter version goes down maybe a little bit further than the 26 liter size, which makes sense as it's a deeper bag. It's slightly taller, so you know you might want to have that extra bit of opening to be able to get down to the bottom of the bag easier. But you know, just simple compartments overall that are going to be able to handle pretty much anything that you throw at them and then the last area that we're going to be taking a look at is the laptop compartment
