Overall I ran my fingers along the side of the fretboard and nothing felt too sharp or anything, and each note rings out pretty cleanly without any real buzz (unless it's on me fretting a chord that I'm not yet comfortable with). Overall finger placement has been pretty forgiving.

I don't want to get a traditional jazz hollow body, as I want something versatile. I'm leaning towards a Stratocaster at the moment.

 Most of the time you will get what you pay for, in regards to anything. But as has already been stated, if you play it and you like the way it feels that’s more important than anything.

[Discussion] Are $800 guitars good?

In contrast to the recommendations above, I would not recommend a Les Paul for a beginner, and this is coming from someone with a Gibson Les Paul. They're blocky, heavy and with a really thick neck, plus they gave a shorter scale length and 22 frets, with the highest notes being extremely hard to access. They're not the most playable guitar and that can be a real barrier for a beginner with things like Barre chords.

I've been wanting to get into playing for a long time, but I don't know what guitars are the best or what would fit me.

[QUESTION] do you guys have any recommendations for a starter guitar?

 Remember how I told you I played the 60s and the 50s version? The other reason why I rejected that 50s one is the nut was not cut right. It was way too low for the G string. It was buzzing and it wouldn't quite ring out open. I also see quite a few of these demo models out there that have small little blemishes, and that was just on launch day

 So really having any Gibson that is completely solid all throughout here is kind of uncommon nowadays and it's a very welcomed feature. But at what price does that cost us? Well, we now have nine and a half to ten pound Les Pauls. But let me tell you, that sounds scary, but this thing actually feels pretty darn good. It doesn't feel as heavy as it is, so I'm happy to report that

 The 50s version gets the Amberd styled ones. Personally, I prefer the other ones, but there's something about these reflectors that I think looks good with the little pickguard sticker. You've got the nice shiny hardware on here. I think it looks awesome

 I visited Sweetwater and I played both a 50s and 60s version. And for me, the 60s came home because it had a way nicer top and it felt better in my hands. Another difference between the two models lies within the tuners. The 60s gets the Grover Rotamatic tuners, whereas the 50s version gets the Klusen style

 you're getting what they're just calling a gloss finish which is polyurethane which is not my favorite thing. but other than that I mean this guitar really punches way above its weight class that I think you'll see once I start playing the other Les Paul's this thing does everything you want a Les Paul to be now because it's a 60s Les Paul the 60 spec. It's got a Slimmer neck profile than what I like, but that is somewhat historically accurate if you look at the original bursts from 58, 59, and 60 as the guitars went later on in years. [GEAR] After 7 years, I pulled the trigger and bought my first Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe :)

That’s one of my rigs and it absolutely roars. It’s what an electric guitar is supposed to sound like, it’s what I hear when I think of the electric guitars

Personally I'm a sucker for those 70's treble boosted tones, think Blackmore, Rory Gallagher and Page.

Something about that sound just makes it so versatile, plus you can really hear the articulation of their playing with the natural character of the overdrive.
