 For whatever reason, despite its multitude of sensors, the watch could not tell the difference between sitting down for an hour and taking a yoga class for the same amount of time. "Move!" it would tell me in the middle of class.

While the watch itself gives plenty of guidance after intense workouts, it lacks finesse when it comes to day-to-day activity alerts. "Move!" the watchface says when you’ve been sedentary for too long, vibrating on your wrist. "Move bar cleared!" it says when you get up and move around. Garmin does not mince words

As for its flaws, the Fenix 5S has all of the same downsides as previous Garmin sport watches — like the inability to interact much with notifications, or a less-than-awesome mobile app. This is both maddening, given that Garmin has had years to work on its app and "smart" features, and also forgivable when you remember what the express purpose of a device like this is.

 For that price, you’d want to to track every activity under the sun. Fortunately, it pretty much does that.

Get ready to cough up $600

 In addition, I receive low battery warnings in the same way. The battery life isn’t the best when in full GPS track mode, but I can get a full day of tracking with about 1/4 of the battery left. This is not a problem on multiple day climbs using an external battery or solar charger. I’m amazed how fast it charges!  To conclude, this watch is a beast!  I turn OFF the wrist heart-rate monitor while not climbing during long activities to: a) Reduce Battery drain from illuminated wrist LEDs. b) Not track low effort heart-rate activities during long hikes in/out of climb.  2. ALTIMETER and Ascent/Descent metrics had accuracy issues out-of-the-box, especially in mountain terrain

I was originally going to purchase a Fenix 5 (F5) when someone who was having accuracy issues asked me if I would like to try it out. While I liked the F5, my thinking evolved as follows: 1) I noticed May-June F5 devices had un-explainable Altimeter accuracy issues

  Another pleasant surprise was Garmin Connect IQ (which is the Garmin app store). Connect IQ includes many useful additional apps, widgets, watch-faces. For example, there's a Weather Underground widget that lets your obtain localized Temperature, Wind, Humidity, Precipitation for the closest WU weather station near you. The WU Weather widget is especially useful for those of you who adventure in remote areas, since the standard Weather Connect IQ app from Garmin only provides weather information for major cities (which is not useful in mountain wilderness areas)

  I quickly learned how to customize the display of altimeter, elapsed time, distance, lap, heart-rate, sunrise-sunset, moon rise/set/phase, and GPS info. These are all useful features for mountain wilderness climbing activity. Out of the box these watches allow customization of up to 4 fields per screen. For example, for hiking in mountainous terrain I setup one screen with: Elapsed Time, Distance, Elevation, and Heart-Rate

 I still have to say that I wish the above was more accurate due to the cost of the watch.  BEWARE. Make sure that you buy this product from Amazon.com and not from a 3rd party seller

  Anyways, I returned the Forerunner, repurchased the Fenix 5x made sure it stated “sold and shipped by Amazon.com” and the very next day I received the correct item and I am beyond impressed. Sorry for the long review, but I think it’s important to note that

 I had to buy this watch twice before I actually received it. The first time I bought the watch it came from “amazingwarehouse” . Once I recueved the watch after two days, i actually received a Forerunner 235 and not a Fenix 5x. As you can imagine my frustration, which became even worse after calling Amazon

This is a fully-featured watch and to summarize the quality, this is what the standard should be for military-grade products.  I've had the Apple Watch (Series 3 & 4), the Garmin Fenix 5S, and the Fitbit HR, and this watch wins out because it is highly focused on training, but is more reliable than any other option when it comes to notifications. Having said all that – if you need a watch for highly critical missions, this watch will likely fall below the range of functional necessity. However, if you need a backpacking, casual or travelers watch, you should be really happy with this watch

 The watch needs to be removed for an accurate reading. • A tad bulky on thin wrists (not really a con, just worthy of noting for those who have smaller wrists) • Alti/Baro log review is limited by style of display. If this is a critical feature to you, I'd consider GPS watches • You can only set a single alarm. This is also such a huge oversight

  Having said all that – if you need a watch for highly critical missions, this watch will likely fall below the range of functional necessity. However, if you need a backpacking, casual or travelers watch, you should be really happy with this watch.

I was hoping to love this, but a few things bother me. Good watch with some shortcomings.

 Plus I go swimming daily in the in-ground pool with the watch on without issue. The band is holding up good as new, the face of the watch has no scratches, and all of the buttons work perfectly. After three months of everyday use I have zero complaints about the watch. Glad I bought it

I've been wearing this watch for three months now. It works exactly as advertised to this point. I live in Florida and like to keep an eye on the weather when outside. The barometer function mirrors my home weather station closely

Excellent Watch

 The altimeter is a bit complicated and requires input to calibrate on a regular basis. Temperature appears to be biased by being on your arm and is not ambient. These are no big deals for me, i am enjoying the watch, and it is very comfortable to wear.

 The watch itself is fantastic, The watchband is very comfortable and the features are fairly easy to figure out. Very cool design and a watch I plan to have for years to come. Just be prepared to have to hound the shipping company every step of the way.

I'm stationed in Afg and had previously ordered a watch from Amazon but it was lost, so I was a bit nervous about ordering another one. The shipping company was Pier 18 and they were late in shipping it out and 3 days after the shipping date cited by Amazon I had to send a reminder email to them, but after that I got the watch in less than 2 weeks. The watch itself is fantastic, The watchband is very comfortable and the features are fairly easy to figure out. Very cool design and a watch I plan to have for years to come
