 A knurled metal finish would have made a world of difference here. Appearance is of course completely subjective, but I feel like I need to share my experience with this particular machine. Looking at the photos online and when I first unboxed it, I wasn't a huge fan of the very classic boxy appearance. But each time I went into my kitchen and looked at it, it started to grow on me, especially I think thanks to this dark blue color that I purchased it in

 Both are made from a light and shiny plastic material that detracts from the otherwise premium feel of this machine. With that being said, the actuation of the steam knob feels robust, it's just the superficial feel I wasn't a huge fan of. A knurled metal finish would have made a world of difference here.  Here's what I mean by that. Once dialed in, the Gaggia Classic Pro was able to easily and consistently repeat the same shot time after time. A quick purge of the group resulted in consistent temperatures from shot to shot, and overall it was just a more commercial feeling experience than other machines I've tested in this price range. With that being said, it would be irresponsible of me to talk about the performance in this way without mentioning the caveat that the performance will be directly linked to the quality of the espresso grinder you choose to pair with it

I had a Saeco Poemia that lasted almost 7 years.

They are not built anymore, so I'm looking to buy another espresso machine that will last me a lifetime or at least like the Poemia.

What is an espresso machine that is built to last?

 Sure it'll pull a great shot, but ONLY IF you do everything near perfect every single time you want to pull a shot (including when you're half-asleep first thing in the morning) 3) Everything is manual, so if you're not the kind of person who wants to let it warm up for 15-30 minutes before your morning espresso, learn that when the light says "ready" to brew the first dozen times it's actually not, AND learn how to compensate for other quirks (like temperature swings while pulling a shot and steaming) then you won't be happy... 4) Uses a "standard size 58mm" group head & portafilter (but NOT "the standard" E61, so you must use parts specifically for a Gaggia)  The BAD: 1) Temperature control is a joke! After a few weeks of inconsistent shots, I put a couple thermocouples on the boiler & group head (being a Technical Director / engineer by day, I was curious to see what's going on) and I observed wild temperature swings of over 20 degrees F!!! No wonder there's so many folks adding PID kits to this thing (as I've recently done) 2) Water discharge into the portafilter isn't exactly even 3) The 58mm portafilter also means you'll need near perfect puck prep to get things perfectly extracted 4) The group head sticks down into the portafilter further than what you see in some other machines making it slightly more difficult to maximize your dose, so you might have to put less grinds in the portafilter to avoid smashing them into the shower screen or use larger/deeper baskets than what you're used to with other machines 5) Due to above, grinds can easily contact or get into the shower screen, and I found using a super thin screen on top of the grinds or a paper filter practically a must 6) No pre-infusion, but you can trick the machine into doing this by venting with the steam knob while starting to pull a shot, or add a dimmer (as I did) to make the pump variable speed/flow 7) The distance between the group head/portafilter and the drip tray is SUPER short! Forget about putting any normal size cup in there (even for a latte), especially with a scale unless you remove or buy one of the slim drip trays

Good but Not Great

I just pulled my first shot with Eureka Mignon Specialita + Gaggia Pro Classic after using shitty grinder for a while, and IT’S EYE OPENING. I’m very far away from sophisticated coffee snob, so couldn’t imagine that I could taste such a huge difference with the same type of coffee but only changing the grinder.

 Well it came in this past Thursday and I’ve pulled around 30 shots or so and they have all been nowhere close to good. I’ve been using 17g of a locally roasted coffee that was roasted on the 3rd of April and pulling 34g out in about 28 seconds.

GAGGIA CLASSIC PRO - Small But Mighty Home Espresso

* Gaggia Classic Pro (seems like the ideal starter machine but I’m worried I’ll get frustrated quickly). * Rancilio Silvia (heard great things, similar category of Gaggia Classic Pro but more expensive). * Cafelat Roboto (love the look and the idea of manual pressing but it’s still expensive and no milk steamer). *

 I also could not get good foam with my milk like I did with the Breville. I also didn't like that it did not have an automatic turn off. The coffee was also no better and possibly worse than my old Breville. The space between the porta filter and the base is as others reported just a few inches

For the espresso machine, I have been looking at the Profitec pro 600,  Breville Dual Boiler BES920XL, Rancilio Silvia Pro Espresso Machine, LUCCA A53 Mini Espresso Machine by La Spaziale. As of right now, I'm leaning towards the Profitec pro 600, Rancilio pro, and the Lucca A53.

I have been looking at the Lucca a53 and if you have the room under where the machine is to be located you can go with the plumbed version and use a 5g water-cooler jug with a flojet accumulator setup and with that you can control the preinfusion based on the bar you set on the accumulator and then you have preinfusion like the Elizabeth but with a workhorse machine that will last and last.

I've decided that the Lelit Bianca et al. go too far for me. I will "settle" for dual boilers and PID control, leaving flow profiling off the list of requirements. I'm seeing that for about $1600, the Lelit Elizabeth and the Rancilio Silvia Pro look like good options. I'm leaning towards the Lelit atm for its pre-infusion.

Now the question: are there any other strong contenders in this segment that I should consider?

Out on the long tail of diminishing returns

In terms of features the Lucca A53 and the Profitec Pro 300 are the most capable on that list while the ECM Mechanika and Appartamento seem equally the least capable. I like the Lucca the best on paper but the 53mm portafilter is a dealbreaker for me personally though this may not matter to others.

What do you guys think is the best machine under $2k? I’m currently looking at the following:

But yeah, an engineer buddy of mine diagrammed out why a hx was not for me (after the Gaggia experience I wanted repeatable and consistent temps) so double-boiler was my choice. My final cut was Profitec 300, 600, Bianca and a Lucca A53 Mini. I couldn't live with the black plastic of the Lucca and I didn't like the looks of the 300, nor the lame switch that I would break on the front. I also wanted good steam so the stretch seemed worth it

There‘s still quite a bit of time left until I finally pull the trigger but I want to know what to expect. 
Budget is around 2.5-3k$

Drinking profile: 
- 2-3 cups a day, sometimes more if we‘ve got people over. 
- We exclusively drink milk drinks like lattes or cappuccinos, therefore a proper steam wand is a must

My current favorite is the Lelit Bianca paired with either a Niche or - depending on the reviews and quality - the new Eureka single dosing Oro, once it‘s out. 

Current thoughts and concerns: 
- Is a dual boiler overdoing it since we will be drinking 3 drinks max. a day? 
- Regarding the time for heating up - how about a high quality HX machine like the Ascaso Steel Duo PID?
- Are HX machines (given it‘s a high quality one) more future-oriented?

Also, I am located in Germany if that helps anything.

Recommendations for a ~3k setup?

* Lucca A53 - I like the classic look of this one, but the temp control seems kind of looser (you get 10 options I think?). * Rocket Mozzy V - This is slightly uncomfortable in price but seems to be the Mac daddy for the features I want.

Over all, I recommend paying the additional $300 for the Lucca A53 over the Appartamento due to getting more features, more consistency, and a serious work horse.
