 A knurled metal finish would have made a world of difference here. Appearance is of course completely subjective, but I feel like I need to share my experience with this particular machine. Looking at the photos online and when I first unboxed it, I wasn't a huge fan of the very classic boxy appearance. But each time I went into my kitchen and looked at it, it started to grow on me, especially I think thanks to this dark blue color that I purchased it in

 Both are made from a light and shiny plastic material that detracts from the otherwise premium feel of this machine. With that being said, the actuation of the steam knob feels robust, it's just the superficial feel I wasn't a huge fan of. A knurled metal finish would have made a world of difference here.  Here's what I mean by that. Once dialed in, the Gaggia Classic Pro was able to easily and consistently repeat the same shot time after time. A quick purge of the group resulted in consistent temperatures from shot to shot, and overall it was just a more commercial feeling experience than other machines I've tested in this price range. With that being said, it would be irresponsible of me to talk about the performance in this way without mentioning the caveat that the performance will be directly linked to the quality of the espresso grinder you choose to pair with it

I had a Saeco Poemia that lasted almost 7 years.

They are not built anymore, so I'm looking to buy another espresso machine that will last me a lifetime or at least like the Poemia.

What is an espresso machine that is built to last?

 Sure it'll pull a great shot, but ONLY IF you do everything near perfect every single time you want to pull a shot (including when you're half-asleep first thing in the morning) 3) Everything is manual, so if you're not the kind of person who wants to let it warm up for 15-30 minutes before your morning espresso, learn that when the light says "ready" to brew the first dozen times it's actually not, AND learn how to compensate for other quirks (like temperature swings while pulling a shot and steaming) then you won't be happy... 4) Uses a "standard size 58mm" group head & portafilter (but NOT "the standard" E61, so you must use parts specifically for a Gaggia)  The BAD: 1) Temperature control is a joke! After a few weeks of inconsistent shots, I put a couple thermocouples on the boiler & group head (being a Technical Director / engineer by day, I was curious to see what's going on) and I observed wild temperature swings of over 20 degrees F!!! No wonder there's so many folks adding PID kits to this thing (as I've recently done) 2) Water discharge into the portafilter isn't exactly even 3) The 58mm portafilter also means you'll need near perfect puck prep to get things perfectly extracted 4) The group head sticks down into the portafilter further than what you see in some other machines making it slightly more difficult to maximize your dose, so you might have to put less grinds in the portafilter to avoid smashing them into the shower screen or use larger/deeper baskets than what you're used to with other machines 5) Due to above, grinds can easily contact or get into the shower screen, and I found using a super thin screen on top of the grinds or a paper filter practically a must 6) No pre-infusion, but you can trick the machine into doing this by venting with the steam knob while starting to pull a shot, or add a dimmer (as I did) to make the pump variable speed/flow 7) The distance between the group head/portafilter and the drip tray is SUPER short! Forget about putting any normal size cup in there (even for a latte), especially with a scale unless you remove or buy one of the slim drip trays

Good but Not Great

I just pulled my first shot with Eureka Mignon Specialita + Gaggia Pro Classic after using shitty grinder for a while, and IT’S EYE OPENING. I’m very far away from sophisticated coffee snob, so couldn’t imagine that I could taste such a huge difference with the same type of coffee but only changing the grinder.

 Well it came in this past Thursday and I’ve pulled around 30 shots or so and they have all been nowhere close to good. I’ve been using 17g of a locally roasted coffee that was roasted on the 3rd of April and pulling 34g out in about 28 seconds.

 What are your thoughts on the Gaggia Classic? What are your thoughts on home espresso machines in general? Do you have any questions, any comments about them? GAGGIA CLASSIC PRO - Small But Mighty Home Espresso

* Gaggia Classic Pro (seems like the ideal starter machine but I’m worried I’ll get frustrated quickly). * Rancilio Silvia (heard great things, similar category of Gaggia Classic Pro but more expensive). * Cafelat Roboto (love the look and the idea of manual pressing but it’s still expensive and no milk steamer). *

 I also could not get good foam with my milk like I did with the Breville. I also didn't like that it did not have an automatic turn off. The coffee was also no better and possibly worse than my old Breville. The space between the porta filter and the base is as others reported just a few inches

The purpose of our special thermometer is to indicate several valuable info for the E61 HX or SBDU coffee machine user,like the group head idle temperature and the water temperature just near the coffee puck,before the start,during and after the brewing process.The installation process of the sensor does not need special tools, conditions or high tech knowledge.We provide the full installation kit in the package.Before installation,make sure the E61 machine is turned off and cooled down.Remove the Allen head screw located just on front of the group head.Make sure the sensor has the copper washers (up to 3 pcs) on it and that the Teflon washer (the OEM one that was already inside) is into the group head. Insert and screw the sensor into the group head. Make the blind basket test to make sure there are no water leaks.So, there is no need for Teflon tape, sealant of any kind, cutting or any sort of adaptations. The most important and only condition is to make sure that your coffee machine model has a E61 exposed group head. Please understand that the sensor is located just near the coffee puck, at a maximum of 1.25″ above. I personally think the more expensive HX e61 machines are weird compromises, like who wants to pay nearly 3k to temperature surf? Don’t be fooled by the PID, a good group head thermometer will show you temperature swings from 212 to 180, and the correct cooling flush won’t be a consistent amount of time.

Me again… I’m upgrading my machine from the Rancilio Silvia. I’ve decided I want a rotary motor, don’t care too much about flow profiling as I don’t think I’ll realistically use it.  I want to consistently have good extractions and be able to steam milk at the same time (up to 4 lattes at once). 

What’s the consensus on heat exchanger vs true dual boiler?  Will I be able to extract and steam a bunch of drinks at once with HX? With a dual boiler I’m just thinking there’s room for more things to go wrong in terms of servicing and not sure if I’ll notice a difference in the extractions and steaming.

I’m debating between Rocket Mozzafiato chronometer, profitec pro 600 and if I’m spending this much already, maybe spend a little more for the Lelit Bianca. Any issues with durability/longevity/serviceability of these machines?

What do you value with your machine?

 It works great! And makes a difference without use of a PID. I also like the service provided by Coffee Sensor. They answer questions promptly, thoroughly, without condescention! They got package out fast from Europe by DHL. Would definitely buy from them again

I own a Rocket Appartamento. I had trouble with bitter shots and overheating. The first thermometer I tried was purchased from Svendson's, sold on Chris's Coffee. It was unnecessarily tedious with poor instructions and the first one didn't work

 That puts you up to $2,000 unfortunately. Other people are gonna recommend Breville products but those are all gonna be plastic and appliance grade whereas an E61 HX will be machine grade and built to last.
