Used Fuji Touring, older Trek 520, the ubiquitous Surly Long Haul Trucker. These are relatively easy to find used, and may need some minor tune up work, but are your best bets on a budget.

What Touring Bike that costs less than $1000, preferably less than $500, would you recommend?

The Fuji Touring, IMHO, is by far the best bang for the buck. That said, buy the one that actually fits you the best. Fit is really, really, really important if you're going to tour.

I'm pretty new to long distance touring, but I'm planning a cross-country tour for next summer. I'm going to start off this fall biking the Natchez Trace, but I wanted to get some feedback on what type of bike I should be looking into. I went to my local bike shop today and they showed me a Trek Dual Sport 3, which seems good and the price is right, but I wanted to get feedback before I pull the trigger on a bike that may not work for my cross-country ride.

Any advice is much appreciated :)

Deciding on Bike for San Francisco to Portsmouth

Road bikes generally aren't great for touring, you'll want a touring bike that is designed to carry weight. You can tour on a road bike if you're willing to put up with bad handling or you're able to keep the weight extremely low. Road bikes are great if you're staying in a hotel every night and need minimal gear, not so great if you're carrying heavy panniers full of camping and cooking gear. Trek 520, Fuji Touring, Kona Sutra, Surly Long Haul Trucker are the standards for a reason

My main requirements are that the bike is more of a tourer than a racer, but by no means completely a tourer.

The main purpose of the bike is for carrying moderate loads  on smooth roads (550km trip planned).

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Surly Disk Trucker has a better geometry, a longer wheelbase and stronger wheelset for loaded touring.

I’m heading to Italy and Ireland for a slow tour (and to train for the AIDS LifeCycle ride!) and I’m on the fence about these two options, which are pretty similar but have clear trade-offs. My Surly, Lyman, has butterfly handles that I love but the brakes are really stiff and the bike weighs 10 lbs more than Chad, my Diverge. Lyman was great zooming around New Orleans for a week but I haven’t tried him on hills fully loaded and the weight worries me. I rode Chad about 600 miles around NW Europe and all went well except I never use the drops and don’t love being hunched over when I want to look at the scenery. I suspect putting my butterflies and a kickstand on Chad would be considered a crime, but I already switched to a suspension seat post and the Bicycle Police have stayed away. I use a pannier set up and hope to ride on a variety of terrain. Should I Frankenstein Chad or stick with Lyman and build up my hand strength? I just want to ride and be a tourist while training.
