Used Fuji Touring, older Trek 520, the ubiquitous Surly Long Haul Trucker. These are relatively easy to find used, and may need some minor tune up work, but are your best bets on a budget.

What Touring Bike that costs less than $1000, preferably less than $500, would you recommend?

The Fuji Touring, IMHO, is by far the best bang for the buck. That said, buy the one that actually fits you the best. Fit is really, really, really important if you're going to tour.

I'm going to start off this fall biking the Natchez Trace, but I wanted to get some feedback on what type of bike I should be looking into. I went to my local bike shop today and they showed me a Trek Dual Sport 3, which seems good and the price is right, but I wanted to get feedback before I pull the trigger on a bike that may not work for my cross-country ride.

Any advice is much appreciated :)

Deciding on Bike for San Francisco to Portsmouth

Road bikes generally aren't great for touring, you'll want a touring bike that is designed to carry weight. You can tour on a road bike if you're willing to put up with bad handling or you're able to keep the weight extremely low. Road bikes are great if you're staying in a hotel every night and need minimal gear, not so great if you're carrying heavy panniers full of camping and cooking gear. Trek 520, Fuji Touring, Kona Sutra, Surly Long Haul Trucker are the standards for a reason

My main requirements are that the bike is more of a tourer than a racer, but by no means completely a tourer.

The main purpose of the bike is for carrying moderate loads  on smooth roads (550km trip planned).

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hey all, investing in my first touring bike for Europe and have settled on the Kona Sutra. Trying to decide between the two.

The SE is a little cheaper, wondering if anyone has any insight into if the non-SE is worth it! I do prefer the integrated brake shifters… but beyond that I don know if I can justify it. I understand the drive train (2x10 vs 3x10) is another difference, but am still new to the intricacies of touring bikes.

Does anyone have any insight on the difference between the two?

Kona sutra vs Kona sutra SE?

These are mostly midrange drop bar bikes. I just bought a Kona Sutra this year and can personally testify that it‘s  an awesome bike.

I would like it to have:

Rear and front rack mounting points,
Disc brakes,
Drop bars or flat bars,
Under bottom tube cage mounting points as well as inside the frame,
Good gears for going relatively fast but mostly crawling up hills,
Chunky tyres or clearance for some!

I am not having any luck with searching for such a bike, it's hard and I believe to be more of an experience with knowledge thing so any help or pointers would be very welcome, thanks!
