I took a look at the geo on the Jari, it's more relaxed than a racing road bike would be but not too far off the mark of what you'd get with an endurance model, so it seems you picked middle of the road fairly well. For everything you described that you need your bike to do it sounds to me like you picked well. 1. I rode TRP mech discs for 4 years, always hated how hard it was to brake in the hoods (& I have reasonably good grip strength)

I'm wanting to get into biking for both the exercise and the thrill of it. For the most part, I'm not at all concerned with "road cyclist" things like watts and times and weight and aerodynamics. I simply want to ride for both the mental and physical health benefits. 

Having said that, as I continue to research, I'm coming across a bit of buyer's remorse. My bike hasn't arrived yet, but I'm wondering if a road bike would've been able to do everything I want to do with a bike anyways. 

I do want to ride on the road, but as I'm just getting back into biking after a long hiatus, I'll be sticking to trails until I get comfortable on it again. But I've seen that road bikes are still capable of some (very light) off-roading when need be, especially if modified or with the right tires. 

I expect that at least 70% of my riding will be on tarmac, while the other 30% will be a mixture of dirt or gravel trails (mostly because I am limited to what I can bike in my area, and there aren't many off-road trails near me). 

The biggest advantage I like with the gravel bike is that I have nearly every mount attachment possible on it, so it will make trips to the grocery store and the like a breeze, which would be more difficult to do on the road bike. 

I just feel that because I am doing the vast majority of my riding on tarmac, maybe a gravel bike is a bit too "adventure forward" for my needs? I do like having the ability to go off-road if necessary though, and I did go for a gravel bike that leans more towards road geometry than road (Fuji Jari). 

So I do think I've reached a good compromise, but maybe I was just underestimating road bike versatility? What do you guys think?

And in terms of upgrades, I have some real noobie questions:

1. The only thing the Jari didn't have on my checklist was hydraulic brakes. It has disc mechanical brakes. My question is, can I simply upgrade to hydraulic ones at any given time? Or does the frame need to be compatible with it in order to do so? I am very new to the mechanics of bicycles. 

2. Would a suspension seat post and stem (something like the redshift products) be a worthwhile first upgrade? Over the wheels for example. I think it's going to be something I'll want, it seems like it would come in handy for not only off-road, but also when I eventually work my way back up to commuting. 

3. As far as wheels/tires, the Jari comes with 700c, but I always read that it's better to upgrade to a wider tire (650b in this case). Is this going to make a much more noticeable difference in comfort levels? Will I lose speed on tarmac with wider tires? Not that I'm concerned with speed, but when I do get to commuting, the faster the better obviously.

Did I make the correct decision in getting a gravel bike as my one singular "do-it-all" bike over a road? And other questions concerning upgrades (hydraulic brakes, suspension seatpost, wheels)

Not a single puncture in a year, minimal maintenance, and I can run lower pressure, thus making the ride more comfortable. A no-brainer upgrade for me. - The Jari comes both with a 2x and a 1x setup.

 Drivetrain wise, the 1.3 is a one by drivetrain, so that means we're rocking a single ring up front a 40 tooth in fact, and then out back it has the Sram apex one by system. So this apex one by system runs an 11 to 42 tooth gear range in the back operating to that 40 tooth up front, so you get less than a one to one ratio which is good for climbing, but then you have all that range in the back with this one by crankset, operating with a clutch mechanism to help keep things nice and quiet and shifting. that one by system is the Sram Apex shifters

 So this apex one by system runs an 11 to 42 tooth gear range in the back operating to that 40 tooth up front, so you get less than a one to one ratio which is good for climbing, but then you have all that range in the back with this one by crankset, operating with a clutch mechanism to help keep things nice and quiet and shifting. that one by system is the Sram Apex shifters. The Fuji Jari Series is Fuji's take on an inventor ready gravel bike. So this gravel bike has a neutral position so it would be fine to be able to do a performance type event, some light bike packing or touring if that's what you're into

 So here we're rocking Fuji's A6 super butted Aluminum which essentially means that this is a shaped and butted aluminum frame. It runs a tapered steer tube down to this carbon fiber fork, which of course runs through axle. It's also got integrated fender mounts and triplicate mounts to be able to run a bag or bottle on the fork, and then the frame is all internal cable routing with everything running through. Nice and smooth with triple kit mounts on the down tube, double water bottle mounts on the seat tube, and just below where the bottom bracket is is also another mount for a water bottle

Did FUJI nail the "Adventure Gravel" bike?

 For the price this is a very solid buy. It doesn’t have hydraulic disc brakes or top of the line mechanical disc brakes, but it rides smooth on all surfaces and stops well. I’ve taken it on gravel, grass fields, and paved roads with no issues. The wiggle team sent it nearly fully assembled and in great condition

 There's really very little that they could have included that they didn't in terms of mounting points. Uh, let's talk about the wheel set. Yeah, Wilson is a Dt Swiss G 1800 spline. It's a 25 millimeter width

 Yeah, so Fuji said that This is one of the lighter frames gravel frames on the market. So the frame weight is below a kilogram, which is impressively light. The fork weight is around 400 grams which is also quite light. It builds into into this quite handsome looking bike

Just because you can spend thousands of dollars on a race-ready carbon gravel bike doesn’t necessarily mean you should. For budget-oriented riders interested in exploring backroads or taking the scenic route to work, Kona’s Rove AL 650 is plenty of bike. For $949, the Rove includes a quality aluminum frame, ample mounting locations for accessories, water, and gear, and a dependable Shimano Claris drivetrain. Further, its wide 47-millimeter tires do an admirable job soaking up the kind of bumps, ruts, and rocks that you often find on forest service roads.

As with any budget offering, the Rove AL 650 has its fair share of compromises. Compared to the Cannondale above, the Claris is a significant downgrade in both components and features. Most notably, it forgoes thru-axles (which add stiffness and inspire confidence during fast descents) in favor of the quick-release style. Moreover, you miss out on a vibration-dampening carbon fork (the Kona’s is stiffer alloy), and it sports less-powerful mechanical disc brakes rather than hydraulic.  Perfect bike for that. If you plan to go bike packing with it or ride some really steep gravelly terrain, you might have to make some upgrades in particular with the gearing and get creative with how you pack things. So lots of liked about this bike. It is actually one of my favorite bikes that I reviewed this year despite all the challenges of getting the bike to review I Really like it from a purely like objective

 But if you do only use this on the road and I write it as a supple road bike, just pure pavement, That's probably going to be enough. And lastly, the final dislike, which is probably the biggest dislike for me, is I wish there was a little bit more utility in the front fork I Would have loved it if this bike had three pack mounts or had the ability to carry a small random. Rex I Think this geometry. You know the supple tires really lends itself to more adventure riding, but as it is you can, you have to run a reckless front bag system

 I'm going to just address the elephant in the room if you guys follow us on Instagram that you know that we had a really difficult time getting ahold of someone from Kona getting ahold of a bike to review all I can do is ask forward all your requests but ultimately they make the decision so there are this. So let's jump into the review. The Kerner of NR BDL has an aluminum frame with a carbon fork and this particular model comes in this Robin shell blue which just looks amazing. The bike also ships stocked with 650b wheels and tires

 Rex I Think this geometry. You know the supple tires really lends itself to more adventure riding, but as it is you can, you have to run a reckless front bag system. But I think if they had a fork option that had three pack mounts that could take a front rack for front low riders, they really the really knock this bike out of the park in terms of a bike that's fun to ride naked but also offers a lot of utility. but as it stands, can't do that
