If you don't want to spend too much on an ultra-premium laptop like the Apple MacBook Pro 16 (2021), get the Framework Laptop (2022) instead, an ultraportable available with Intel 12th Gen. P-Series processors. It has a sturdy aluminum chassis, a sharp QHD display, and a comfortable keyboard that you can type on all day. It's highly configurable, as Framework allows you to choose each component individually, and you can easily upgrade it yourself later on. It's also a great choice for those working on Linux, as you can get it without an operating system installed, and Framework even provides instructions on how to install a custom OS.

Performance-wise, the Intel 12th Gen. CPUs perform exceptionally well. There's very little throttling under load, and while the keyboard gets a bit hot, the fans are relatively quiet. The biggest downside of this laptop is its short battery life, which lasts less than seven hours of light use or a little over an hour of intensive tasks. Framework promised an update that'll address the battery life issue, though there's no word on the update yet. Nonetheless, it's still a great laptop overall and one of the best laptops for developers we've tested. The Framework Laptop is only available on Framework's website.

A macOS alternative would be the Apple MacBook Air 13 (2022). This new model has a fresh new design and a fast M2 SoC that can handle nearly everything you throw at it. Unfortunately, it only supports one external display, which might be an issue if you like working on multiple screens. It's also impossible to upgrade since all the components are soldered onto the motherboard. You get longer battery life, though, as it lasts almost 11 hours of light productivity.

Framework Laptop Review

That sort of underscores a theme of this review, which is that so much of this laptop’s value hinges on what its promised ecosystem and support network will actually look like. There are a few guides on Framework’s website — for setting up the pre-builts and the DIY kit, replacing the bezels, replacing the keyboard, and replacing the mainboard — but some processes that people will likely want are still missing as of this writing. There’s no guide to replacing the memory, for example (you have to find that in the mainboard replacement guide). Framework says that’s coming soon

The value of this laptop hinges on future support

The Framework Laptop comes not from a major manufacturer, but Framework Computer, a San Francisco-based company that (if you couldn&rsquo;t tell from the name) is all about this product in particular. The concept comes along at a time when both the "right to repair" push (the ability for end users to maintain and upgrade their tech purchases rather than dispose of them) and being more environmentally friendly are firmly in the zeitgeist. Indeed, just a few weeks before we wrote this, the Biden administration announced plans for an executive order addressing onerous repair restrictions on certain products, including types of tech.

It otherwise sat in the middle of the pack on average across the CPU and Photoshop tests, never the fastest nor the slowest. None of these systems is really a specialist media-creation or -editing machine in terms of speed or raw power (more specialized pro-grade systems are recommended if that&rsquo;s part of your workflow), but the Framework Laptop can do a job when called on.

Not all of the competitors were able to complete the PCMark 10 test for one reason or another, but the Framework Laptop passed admirably. Anything over 4,000 points is a good score, and this system easily surpasses that number, earning the all-clear for everyday productivity. 

I'm not familiar with the Lenovo laptop and I've not used either of them, but the Framework laptop looks impressive simply because it's the only laptop I know of that is designed to be easily repaired and upgraded. As a long-term investment it's probably the better option.

The Enter key is SO soft and mushy and I've noticed many of the keys, like the pair of Space bars, are also soft and don't register contact multiple times. VERY frustrating as I can type around 50 wpm and I'm having to Backspace WAY too much! GRR!. I want to send this POS back and try another brand, but I've found no other alternatives in my searches.

Having 2 classes in row will mean you're looking to sit near a plug in class to keep it charged. You can dim the screen down but that's not always possible when you're in a bright classroom

 My old model, with a card slot, I routinely swapped out cards depending on my usage. I was hoping the battery life was some improved. It might be marginally but use it for a couple hours and it's going to need a charge. I wouldn't recommend this for students

Good but with some disappointments.

We did not open the shrink wrap as there was no indication of a keyboard. Be aware of false depictions of keyboard included even in the video. Otherwise, the product should be ok if you want a tablet, not a PC.
