I'm going to college this fall and am starting to think of what I'm going to need to prepare and bring with me, and one of the biggest problems I've come across is what I should do for an amp situation in my small-ish dorm. I currently have a Marshall DSL40 which I absolutely love, but as of right now I don't think I'll be taking it with me as it gets pretty loud and is kinda bulky. I also have a really small and crappy crate amp my grandfather gave me when I first started playing which I could bring with me, but its really not all that quality. The first solution I though of was getting studio monitors and playing through my interface with the digital amps I currently have in Helix Native so that I can practice, but also produce music. The second was a smallish practice amp that sounds nice but wont bring in noise complaints, and that I can take with me to play live and jam with friends. With the monitors I would have to eventually buy a new amp or get my Marshall up to university, but with an amp I would always have to record and mix music through headphones (which isn't all that bad, I just like the luxury of having monitors).

Best solution for college, monitors with digital amps, or small practice amp? [QUESTION]

 Tube snobs will look down, but you can get some phenomenal 'tone' out of these amps if you are willing to spend a little time tuning your patches. Also worth mentioning is that the III can get stupidly loud, I can barely stand going past 2 for practice, and with friends you can keep up with almost any drummer.  This is the perfect amp for a amateur player who is 'finding their sound' or a veteran who wants versatility while still being able to pull some excellent sounds out of his amp. Highly recommend one, and the red color on mine is quite sharp and stands out

I am a huge Mustang III amp fan after having played mine for the last 6 months. Extremely versatile, easy to use, and very good sound quality. The Fender models are truly excellent and I find myself enjoying some of the others a lot too. FUSE software lets you download other peoples patches, which is a nice bonus

Versatility and great sound

 The mastery sounded good, but to my ears it didn't sound $200 better than the stock bridge. The only mod back here is I did have West Lamb go ahead and he fit what you call it little brass I guess just fillers or whatever around the post so this bridge doesn't rock back and forth like they're supposed to and that does help with the tuning a lot. if you have a Mustang it's not staying in tune that well I'll think about asking your tech to do that before doing something else crazy. What I like to do to get my tremolo is the cool thing about these guitars

 You can actually yet probably see the difference there. It's a good guitar too, let's see so it's shorter, which means all the frets are closer together I'm 5/8 on a good day so that's really convenient for me. I can get it I can do stretches on this guitar that that I can't do as easily on other guitars. Also, the nut with up here is is the smaller one in 5/8 so it's very narrow up here which can for some people they don't like these guitars because of that reason

 Things about Mustang Yeah, they are thwack. II They don't have a lot of sustain on their own. Yeah, you're not going to get this thing to sing or store like a. Les Paul It's not going to have the power of the growl of a telly

 So yep, it's just me and Pete today. you are massively louder in my ears than I am so I hope you couldn't hear yourself yeah I think I can balance that out something uh we will we will um but yes so this is mine feels not really nice to play really like I can completely see how this has become kind of a cult classic yeah I don't even know necessarily this is a beginner's guitar anymore is it just becomes something that it might suit your style maybe maybe smaller guitars are more comfy for you maybe you just like that slightly anti-hero kind of vibe of the mustang um anti-hero that's a very cool very good word uh anyway anyway I mean it's the same one it's just the p90s in there it's got the palfero board it's got the satin finish neck it's got the fender tuners on the back there made in mexico nice satin a burgundy uh finish um four bolt on the back little sticker that says don't throw in the bin um and you know and the difference between between the p90s there's more volume in them you know oh that's the back it's really I'm not going to turn it down a little bit so if you again Pete and I were lucky enough to go to a brilliant pickup maker called Monty's recently who explained how a p90 is different to a single coil yeah and it's to do with where the magnet is in the in the pickup so proper single coils the the six pole pieces are actually magnetized and then the coppers wound like that on a p90 the pole pieces aren't magnetized but a big bar magnet sits underneath it which kind of creates the magnetic field and the coppers wound around the pole pieces as normal uh but yes generally speaking a p90 is a fatter louder version of a single coil so i mean it sounds great uh middle how are you finding the short scaleness of it i i think generally speaking they are a bit less stable in terms of tuning yeah in the 25 and a half inch scale length you know what it doesn't feel like a shorter guitar because the body is quite long right so the body is actually from here to here i reckon it's more or less the same as a telecast at least so when you got your arm over and it doesn't have the armrest which means that it's thinner isn't it this bit here it's that from and also it feels like this whole bit is a bit further you have to have your arm in a bit more when you arm further it's just a bit it's a different way of sitting with it it's not and it's not very balanced you see i love that i love that color oh yeah it's not as balanced as what were we trying the other day that was super balanced although was it the prs guitars but i don't know it's not no no it's it's top heavy a little bit top heavy isn't it yeah and i'm even leaning it on you know i mean what we're saying by that if you're not you know ideally what you kind of want for comfort is the guitar to fairly naturally hang it on a strap or on your lap in that position because if you're sitting and the bigger headstock on this does just make it want to um slide over but not i mean like once you've got your arm here so yeah yeah it's not it's not a problem but you still have to hold it up with your arm so there's you know but you know here's a bit of here's a bit of gain it's fat that front that front pickup is fat isn't it middle very spanky uh and then on the bridge that seems that seems like less output in the yeah i noticed that on this one it was like the neck pickup was fatter sounding yeah but i'm not sure i'm i'm not i'm not personally so keen on this i must admit the color i absolutely love it the color i just think it's a vibe it's got a vibe to it no i agree little bit it's more clarity in those pickups yeah i think maybe these strings could do with a change at some point but that's the whole thing with that's what i was saying with classic vibe okay so whatever just give them the full setup deluxe setup everything and you could have one of like every fender guitar that there was for sort of two grand probably yeah i mean the for the for the strat telly must not mustang strat telly uh jazz master and jaguar they were like 1400 quid yeah and that's what i mean but then and then you spend like do a bit of money on each one yeah it's a great shout ADDICTED TO GEAR

 They are unneeded for The tension of the strings that are shipped with it. It's shipped with nines. Which is a fairly common That's probably the most popular nines or tens is probably the most popular gauge So you know especially for a guitar that's supposed to be sort of a shred guitar. I mean nines is sort of it But they think this the springs in the back are just really Really way too much force so the easiest way to remedy that is take the back plate off and You'll see three springs in the back of the the guitar Take the middle spring out The middle spring your guitar should be fully tuned up and whatever that you know where you want it to be for tuning Take that middle spring out you could use like a little pair a needle nose or something and pull it out at the at the side that goes into the bridge and take that spring off and Just put it aside and Then do not put the back plate back on yet Turn the guitar over and look at the bridge and see if the bridge is tilted up The bridge might be tilted up off the face a little bit now if you want a floating bridge you know you could start to try and tune it up from there and In you know and then you could sort of work that out as to what you want for tension I think the easier way if you just want it to work You don't want to have to turn it off

 You want to turn it off the easier way if you just want it to work, and you don't want to have to think about a floating bridge is to flip the guitar on the backside again, so that you can see the the tremolo Springs and Tighten the claw down Until it gets to the point where on the front of the guitar You know take a like a half turn and a half turn and look on the front is it still floating okay? Another half turn and another half turn per screw turn it around us. It's still floating You know and just keep going until it's no longer floating and once it's to the face of the guitar You should be fine, and I got mine to get to the face of the guitar long before it got to the body So you should have plenty of room with the tension of the two remaining Springs again. Take the center spring out Should have plenty of tension left with that remaining spring the Two Springs that are in there to Back it all the way back down and have it sort of decked, but a lot easier Okay So Once you have it so that it's decked okay before you call it like the end of it what I would do What I did with mine Is I flipped it back over and I bent a string give it a good bend like the G string And I looked at the bridge, and I said is the bridge really pulling up You know bend another string and when I look down here is the bridge really pulling up while I do that and At first it kind of was I gave it like another quarter turn for each one, and then that solved that And then then the additional tension at that point of Of of bending the string wasn't enough to pull the bridge forward and That's kind of the sweet spot That's where you want to be you want to have it decked and just enough extra tension so that it doesn't pull forward when you bend the string and You're you'll notice that you you That the bridge is a lot easier To work now than it was when it had the three springs in there No matter how much you adjusted the claw this the springs just had too much Tension coiled up in them there was too much opposing force, and you had to really work it You're going to bend the bar You could even break it off inside there pull that center spring out. It doesn't it doesn't sound good number one and number two You're like over driving the preamp for a split second, and then you're under driving it The better way to do it is I back the pickup off so that the front of the pickup is just about the same height as the pickup ring and Because it's had a little bit of a slant the back is a little bit higher But I did a little bit of a back off on this until I felt like when I looked at it on my meter And it's a hard thing

 It's when you really dig in almost like an unwanted spike at the very beginning and And and they just back that pick up off just a hair The one last thing I can tell you that I did to this And this is at your own risk. It's up to you, but I have a very small wrench that fits perfectly on these little the little nuts that hold the Let me get to this little camera here right right down here that hold these uh pegs in right and I Find that sometimes if these feel like a little loose Maybe two out of six It's just a tiny bit loose, and I have a small wrench And I just very carefully say is this snug and I don't mean tight I mean just snug and if it's a little loose at all and it moves a little bit I just move it until it's snug, and I just make sure that these are snug and down I cannot tell you how much of a difference that will make because when they put these in they don't want to tighten them down And break anything so they don't really a lot of times these can get a little bit loose especially if you're you know Whining a lot for whatever reason the nuts on the top here get a little loose What you don't want to do is over tighten them We don't want to do is crank those down, but if there's any little bit of play in there I Think two of the six had a tiny everything went up snug snug up a little bit of play Snug snug up a little bit of play And boom you know and I mean like a tenth of a turn right But just that last little mile to get it tight, and I'm telling you the stability Is like through the roof all right? Hey, just one more thing before we wrap this video up You should remove the resistor on the volume knob in this guitar I want to thank wicked fester, which I'm assuming is a play on wicked Lester For pointing that out the resistor that they use on the volume pot does more harm than good It's supposed to be their version of like the treble bleed But it really made the the guitar sound kind of boxy when you rolled the volume off now When I roll the volume off It's got wonderful bass and a Noticeable tone improvement, so I just grabbed a little set of snips and Just snipped it out. It doesn't matter if you leave the tang on it You don't have to get a soldering iron out or anything just get a little set of snips and go in there just snip off one leg and then snip off the other leg and Use a pair of tweezers and take out the resistor and throw it in the trash because I think it sounds better with it out All right all right there you go Again, that's only for the for this guitar. That's not if you have another brand I can't I'd have to check it out, but if you have one of these if you have a Kramer a Kramer Beretta if you have a Kramer Beretta Special Pull that resistor off the volume knob it really does it makes it It totally makes it sound better, and there you go all right dudes as always Thanks much for hanging out rock on

Setting Up Your Kramer Baretta Special for BEST PERFORMANCE!

 I'm gonna be able to tell more over time, but as of right now it actually works pretty well. [Music] [Music] So I am starting off playing in a classic guitar amp with a compressor on so this is no pretty much no gain really. [Music] So [Music] So so yeah, that's the clean tone.  So let's switch up the amps here. Let's go 6505 In the memory of Ebh himself. recipes Addy [Music] So [Music] See, and that's what makes this guitar so great is that it sounds great. With the stock pickup and everything it seems to be staying in tune

 One thing off the bat I will say is the volume pot. I've seen this on a lot of them. This it's not good. but to be honest with this guitar, it's max or nothing for me because this is just a shred guitar

 The front job of this thing is actually amazing. That's another thing too is like I have this on zero you still here? [Music] I mean it doesn't say zero, it only says one. so technically maybe it is on this one. All right

THE GREATEST CHEAP GUITAR OF ALL TIME!! (Kramer Baretta Special)

   The pickup is surprisingly good and puts out a nice amount of crunch.  Perfect for 80's metal.  I may eventually swap it out down the road for a Seymour Duncan JB, but it definitely holds it's own.  I wasn't expecting much from this inexpensive trem and I'm not a big whammy user, so I decked the trem and tuning stability has been very good

Bottom line for the price, these guitars are a steal if you can put in some basic setup work.  Honestly if you are not a Floyd user, spend a quarter of the price of the Baretta Vintage and grab this guitar.

I'm growing my mullet back!!!

 So I'm a big fan of Eddie Van Halen I always was I Was back in high school when they hit the scene and he blew my mind and I couldn't help but become a van Halen fan because he was just so great on guitar and ever since then I've always wanted to have a guitar like his. Now the trouble is they did come out with guitars that looked like his guitar now. Charvel came out with a series of striped guitars like the ones that he was using so we had the one that was red, black and white. He also Came with the other one that was black and yellow and I didn't want to buy those guitars because I didn't want it to be striped I liked Eddie Van Halen and I liked this guitar and I didn't want to have the stripes because there's a lot of weight behind those stripes

 He was using the Kramer Beretta that wasn't the special and had the Floyd Rose made in the USA. But this guitar is very similar with a couple of big differences. a it won't cost you an arm and a leg B It doesn't have a Floyd, but see it also has all of the other main features that the original had. without the heavy price point and it still sounds great

 Charvel came out with a series of striped guitars like the ones that he was using so we had the one that was red, black and white. He also Came with the other one that was black and yellow and I didn't want to buy those guitars because I didn't want it to be striped I liked Eddie Van Halen and I liked this guitar and I didn't want to have the stripes because there's a lot of weight behind those stripes. And if you show up at a gig with a guitar that stripe and it looks like Eddie Van Halen's guitar, you better darn well have Eddie's chops down to a tee because otherwise they're gonna laugh you right out of that rehearsal studio if you can't play those chops now. This guitar is black and very subdued and although it is the same model, it doesn't say or scream Eddie Van Halen as much as the Charr Bells did

 But overall, I've been playing this guitar now for a couple of days and it sustains wonderfully and it really plays really nicely. I Find myself putting a lot of like chunky rhythms. Of course you know some Van Halen tunes and whatnot just because it sounds really good. So you're playing you know, Honeymoon Suite van Halen maybe Whitesnake and some other you know eighties music, some riffs from, you know Motley Crue or something like that
