.I have a Squier Classic Vibe P-bass (bought new in 2011)  and a Fender Mustang (which is heavier than it looks..

bought it used on eBay 6 years ago, not sure of the year--my guess is that it's early-mid 2000s). I've recently been relying on my Aerodyne Jazz bass (about 8lbs), but even that is putting a great deal of strain on my back. I've played the Rick as my main for so long that when I gigged the other day with the Aerodyne, my tone felt castrated no matter how  I dialed in my EQ :(. I choose to see the silver lining in this situation, however, and I'm using it as an excuse to buy a new bass lol!!!!

 I think I always equate it to that, but that's just me, but very bright, very modern sounding jazz bass, lightweight, very thin too. The profile on it's super, super thin and kind of the Aerodyne neck plate on that guy too. Again, always kind of dug these bases and I don't, I've never owned one, but just playing this thing and getting like the wide array of tones that we'll pull out of it in a second. You kind of see why this thing can be such a popular bass and why we do get a lot of requests for it

 Let's go back to the bridge pickup, pull out some of that mid range kind of throatiness that we get, great harmonics. Let's roll that neck pickup, neck pickup, we'll get a little bit of that P bass, you can get close to P bass, but that's just burpy and kind of throaty as you're going to get out of it. Ibanez 2019 SR500E Bass Guitar

Or at least no longer a great deal. 4-5 years ago back when they were US$275 new they were steals, but now that they're $430 plus tax and shipping, they're no longer this amazing moneyball solution, they're at best a decent bass at a fair price. In my opinion if you've got $500 to spend on a bass I'd get a used Mexican Fender or Ibanez SR500, that's where the real value is at that price point.

So, I play guitar, for like 9 years now.

Aaand I wanna get into bass as well, buuut I'm on a pretty tight budget.

So I've been looking at two basses at &lt;500€, which are a Squier Classic Vibe 70s Jazz Bass, and a Sire Marcus Miller V5 Alder

So the Sire is around 80€ more expensive, which, in my situation, is a good chunk of cash - which I could in theory spend though

My question is: is the Sire a significant upgrade from the squier? I know it's got a roasted maple neck and all, but is that a big factor, if I'm going to distort my sound either way (I mainly play metal)?

[Question] What bass to go for as a beginner?

On the plus side, it's comfortable, nice to play, good quality for the price. The preamp offers many possibilities once you've figured out the controls, and it also has a passive mode. The pickups work well in both mode, and they have 4 wires so if you know how to solder you can add switches to get more sound options.

Ibanez vs Sire

the main reason to get a SR500 is I believe those are the cheapest Ibanez that have those sweet bartolini pickups. I have a 500 and it's great, I think if you get a used one in good condition and give it a proper setup it will make you very happy

I prefer playing alternative and metal hence wanting a 5-string (I play other genres for practice but we all have that style that makes us happy). I love me some Ibanez and am trying to decide between the sr300 and sr500. As far as I can see they have the same features but the sr505 improved hardware. Is there a noticeable difference in the two? 

I need to clarify that I am not a professional musician nor do I intend to become one. I just really like playing music as a hobby.

Ibanez SR305 vs SR505: worth the extra$?

Ibanez is pretty lightweight. The SR series by Ibanez is a good way to go. I used to own an SR500 and it was a great bass. It’s a bass I certainly miss and if you can find a pre-owned one in good shape they tend to be priced pretty reasonably
