CR’s take: The Eufy RoboVac G30 Edge isn’t great on carpet, but it boasts top marks for cleaning bare floors. This model is top-notch at navigation—not all robotics are—earning an Excellent rating. It’s also great at cleaning along the edges of walls and corners, and runs rather quietly compared with competing bots. Unlike the other Eufy models on this list, the G30 Edge is WiFi enabled, meaning you can control it from your smartphone. It offers decent data security in our tests, but its data privacy could be better (though it’s not any worse than many competitors).

  The roller brush will get tangled with hair and will require cleaning. This is to be expected but on one occasion, after cleaning the brush and reinstalling it, the vac made a clicking / grinding noise while running. I had to take the brush out again and after reinstalling it, the noise didn't come back. This seems odd, considering the brush was cleaned and not tangled

 It can see walls and will slow down and gently tap the wall before switching directions.  The vac navigates its way through and around table and chair legs, shoes, and other obstacles, remembering where it has already been (presumably by using the mapping feature). It seems to only need a few inches of space between objects (like chair legs) to be able to get in there and clean and rarely gets stuck in those areas.  It also is able to work around some spots that are troublesome in one direction, but ok in other directions

  The runtime appears to be as advertised, which is around 60 minutes on BoostIQ mode (variable suction power). Also, the BoostIQ mode seems to work as it should, increasing suction on carpet and decreasing it on bare floors.  This device is easily added to Google Home by linking the eufy account to Google. Then you can add the device to the home and simply tell google to have robovac (or whatever you name it) start cleaning and/or go home

 This is much better than other models that randomly run around the house with the goal of eventually getting everything clean.  It does not bump into walls full force. An OK budget vacuum option (short test, in-depth results)

 It loses the little rotating brush on the front occasionally when encountering our thin throw rugs. It does not have enough suction to deep clean carpet well. Our house is about 1600 sq ft on the main floor and the battery usually does not last long enough to do the whole thing. And due to the design it does not clean within 4 inches of walls or other objects where the rotating brush does not reach

 It has to back up and turn around so often, it runs the battery down prematurely. You have to pick up any shaggy throw rugs and move any electrical cords on the floor. It loses the little rotating brush on the front occasionally when encountering our thin throw rugs. It does not have enough suction to deep clean carpet well

Works well on hard floors

 I managed to narrow the noise culprit to the rolling brush, but even after removing the brush and guard, there was still additional noise. A few quick emails to Eufy support with videos of the vacuum and noise resulted in a brand new unit being delivered. 5 stars for customer service and support!  With a new unit in hand, I decided to try and repair the original unit. After disassembling the unit, I found the bearing used to drive the rolling brush fill to the brim with dirt, causing the bearing to stick

Great vacuum with flawed, but fixable design issue

 I thought for sure the vacuum wouldn't navigate between kitchen chairs and under the very tight spaces of our couches and ottoman, but it handled it with ease. When the vacuum did get pinched, it found its way out and I didn't have to intervene. I am very impressed how far these have come since the first days of the iRobot models.  The vacuum sneaks into areas and grabs dust bunnies, hair and particles that your average upright vacuum will miss

First the pros: We have roughly 1600sq ft downstairs of which this vacuum was able to identify 1200sq ft and clean it accurately before the battery ran out. The mapping feature is GREAT and I was very impressed with how well the G30 navigated all of our furniture and what I thought were impassible spaces. I thought for sure the vacuum wouldn't navigate between kitchen chairs and under the very tight spaces of our couches and ottoman, but it handled it with ease. When the vacuum did get pinched, it found its way out and I didn't have to intervene

 This was our main motivation for getting a robovac. Before the first run through our house, we did a cursory sweep of the big areas of our house. Even with the larger dust bin, I had to empty the container after ~600sq ft and it was full. I wish this model would notify you when the bin was full via an optical sensor or something

5 hours before the battery ran out and it still had a couple of areas left to complete, so prepare accordingly. After the battery recharges, (roughly 3.5 hours later) it resumes where it left on the original map to complete the house. The vacuum is VERY thorough, but this takes time to complete

Great little vacuum but it's not God's Chariot

 I then turned to the Eufy vaccuums after by-passing them because I didn't thick it would work on our thick pile carpets. I purchased this one based on the then available Amazon price of $249 and $34 for a 3-year protection plan. I never buy those plans but after my prior Neato vaccuum stopped working after a couple of years I decided it was worth getting that protection for these generally unreliable machines. So, after reading reviews over and over again I opted for this Eufy G30 Edge as it was the only reasonably priced one that Consumer Reports said had no observed flaws

The Samsung drove me crazy with its random, almost psychotic repetitive movements, poor battery life and need to recharge several times to complete just a couple of small areas--it got returned. I then turned to the Eufy vaccuums after by-passing them because I didn't thick it would work on our thick pile carpets. I purchased this one based on the then available Amazon price of $249 and $34 for a 3-year protection plan

 I've only run it twice, but it worked on my carpet acceptably if not admirably; it runs for 60 minutes on my carpet--longer on a floor; basically works on a fairly logical grid rather than psychotic random walk through space; finds its way home to recharge; and gets my upstairs done in a few hours. The Samsung never got anything completed. This Eufy does a decent job given the inherent limitations of these robots. I haven't had to rescue it either

Overall decent performance relative to the cost

 I was wrong. It is amazing just how much dirt is collected each cleaning cycle; we have three small dogs. As a former mentor for my grandson's high school robotics team, I was intrigued at the ability to navigate and map the available cleaning area while also navigating around typical household obstacles, such as furniture legs. The cleaning area is large enough that the G30 Edge needs to recharge, then resume cleaning

 I don't use Alexa or Google assistant. I also don't use the schedule feature, preferring to start the cleaning cycle at my discretion. My primary use of the wifi is to use some of the features only available on the Eufy app - most important to me was to turn ON the Auto-return feature. The Map feature and Cleaning History are also informative

This robot was outstanding at picking up nearly every last bit of the sample messes we scattered, partly due to its unique dual counter-rotating rubber brushes. We appreciated that it would periodically dock to recharge and empty its own bin (the dock holds replaceable vacuum cleaner bags) before returning to cleaning. It quickly mapped multiple rooms accurately, making it easy to set cleaning schedules and assign it to specific rooms on demand. Its app wasn’t always the most user-friendly, with some tasks taking multiple steps, but it was adequate. One caveat: While the manufacturer guarantees that this robot avoids pet “accidents,” it didn’t do so consistently: Sometimes it was remarkably clever in dodging the larger pieces of soft plastic dog poo we placed on the floor, but it plowed right over small ones. It did avoid electrical cords as promised. We liked that this robot can be set to start cleaning when it detects that you have left the house and stop when you return, using the location on your phone or by linking to other smart home features such as your door locks. You can also set it to be silent at specific times, such as while you have Zoom meetings or the baby naps.

The iRobot Roomba j7+ is a solid performer in CR’s tests, and that includes an Excellent score on bare floors. The manufacturer says the vacuum has smart mapping technology that allows it to learn, map, and adapt to the areas to be cleaned. Once the robot is docked, a vacuum in the docking station automatically sucks the contents from the bin into an enclosed disposable bag in the base.

CR’s take: The iRobot Roomba j7+ builds on the same robotic core as the Roomba i3 Evo above and earns similar scores on most of our tests. But the Roomba j7+’s navigation system is much more advanced. For starters, it can learn Smart Maps for multiple levels of your home (instead of just one floor, as with the i3 Evo), so you can use a smartphone app to tell it to clean certain rooms and skip others. But the most significant upgrade is the j7+’s obstacle-avoidance system. It uses a camera on the front of the bot to recognize certain hazards, including socks, clothes, towels, and—drumroll, please—pet waste. Once it spots a hazard, the j7+ adjusts its cleaning path to make sure it doesn’t snarl (or smear) the obstacle. CR has not tested this particular feature. Worth noting: iRobot promises that it’ll replace the vacuum if it fails to avoid pet waste in the first year after purchase. One downside of that front-facing camera: The Roomba j7+ is the only iRobot model that falls short of our top rating for data security.Another option to consider is the lower-priced Roomba i7+, which has the same cleaning system and Smart Map capabilities as the j7+ but doesn’t have the obstacle-avoidance feature. It’s an older model, but it’s still available from many retailers.

Expected More - Let Down

 I also can not use the function where you look at the photos with my iphone 11 pro max. I was finally able to do the set up using my OLD ipad air 2. I find it unacceptable that the app will not work for one of the main features or to set it up, using my newish Iphone on the latest iOS software. In talking to other users this problem is common

 This model does an great job on hard surfaces but does not really do the greatest job on carpet compared to my older 980 which had a carpet boost setting that most of the other 900 robots lacked. I also liked that I could set my 980 to focus on cleaning and could turn off edge clean. It's probably silly on my part but I like to see the neat lines on my carpet after it cleans and it seems to do the back and forth cleaning with the j7 and then go around the edges so I see these deep marks on the edges and going around any furniture. I liked that I could turn that off with my 980 so I just saw neat rows

 I could always go turn it on once in awhile but honestly that edge feature is more important with hard floors, than it is with carpet.  One other thing I find odd is that the app shows me carpet the robot has detected, yet there are no settings for changing vac power level and it does not act differently on carpet, so why is the thing worried about detecting my carpet?  I ended up having to set it to clean twice once one way and once across what it vacuumed to get it as clean as it got it with my 980 alone. I probably would have been better off going with the s9 for carpet but I did not want to pay that much and upstairs there is not as much dirt so it does and acceptable job. I just think they could have given it a little more power and more settings

Good But Some Glitches

Having two points for the dust to exit creates poor suction and I ALWAYS have to empty the dust bin manually. It always dies out in the middle of the house, and is constantly getting stuck. The app is nice but it will randomly wipe our map away like we have never used it before. The battery dies SO fast that if I want it to clean our entire first floor (We live in a 1,800 sqft home so maybe 1,200 sqft) I have to run it on low suction which I feel like barely makes a difference

What worked for me to help sort out some kinks with the robot cleaning and it’s job success rate was doing a mapping run right after getting the update. Sorted out all the kinks in how well it performed. 

 For now, I say, if you have the funds, and you don't have the time to regularly vacuum, this is worth the price.

Robot vacuums have come a long way since the days I used to babysit my original Roomba (circa 2006), following it around to make sure it didn’t thrash around on a threshold or ignore the miniature lighthouses and trundle unseeingly into a no-go zone. Back then, my biggest issue was coming home to a robot vacuum that had gone about 10 minutes into its cleanup route and been derailed by a shoe, sock, or dress-up wig.

 Floors can’t really be cleaned if they’re still littered with clutter. But if it means the bot won’t get tripped up by that stray cable you didn’t know was sitting under the couch or the pair of shoes your significant other carelessly discarded in its path, then there’s some benefit. 

 iRobot does not release suction power stats but says that the j7 is 10 times stronger than its entry-level Roomba 600, whereas the s9 is 40 times stronger. The j7 is just fine for regular dirt and debris, and even if you have more challenging tasks (copious kitty litter, for example), it’s hard to recommend the $250 upgrade to the s9, as you don’t get the obstacle navigation features. In my testing of the s9, it routinely fell prey to socks and charging cables.

Where things diverge significantly is battery life — the Roomba can go an impressive 1 hour and 45 minutes on one charge, whereas the Jet Bot tops out at an hour on full power. Both will go back to the base, recharge, and resume, but the Jet Bot took almost twice as long to clean our entire downstairs living area as the Roomba because it had to recharge in the middle while the Roomba could do the whole space in one go.

Home robots are getting smarter

 I can't imagine going forward they will keep this design. If you live in a small apartment then you should definitely be aware that you will be disturbing your neighbors or yourself when it self empties. It's louder than my large shop vac.

The good and bad

I ordered this product last week and it arrived a few days later. I ordered the combination that had extra filters, rollers, and brushes since I have 4 kids and 4 animals in my home. I should mention, I have a German Shepherd that is constantly shedding and a long-haired Siamese cat. Between these two animals, I should sweep daily, but I don't have that kind of time, so I splurged on the Roomba
