Ernie ball music man stingray HH. I have a 2006 and had it since 2008. It’s active and the best bass I’ve ever owned in terms of playability and versatility. Can’t recommend it enough

I'm building my home studio and I'm looking for a 2nd bass that would be active and very versatile. I also prefer classic body shapes. My budget would be about 1600$ usd or less if possible.

Looking for bass recommendations

 Let's get to seeing how this thing sounds. What you're about to hear is a tune I recorded with the Stingray Special. All you are hearing is a DI mixed with a Galeon Krueger Universal Audio amp-sim mixed together and then compressed, and that is it. That's all I did to the bass signal

 It's just an all-around workhorse, and it literally can do anything. I have this one tuned to drop B, and it's tight, and it's percussive. But, real talk, if you are looking for a workhorse bass to beat the crap out of and never be let down by, definitely check out the Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray Special. It will not let you down, I promise

2018 Ernie Ball Music Man Sting Ray Special!

The special has such an amazing mid range that means it will fit in the mix much better and has a more vintage tone. I absolutely adore it but I can't afford it yet so instead I'm using a Sterling with the treble cut and pressure wound strings to emulate it. Imo though the stingray special can do the classic stingray sound easily plus more sounds in a way other models can't do as well.

 What's up gear mortals? Trey Xavier here. On today's edition of Gear God's Quality Control, we're going to be taking a look at the 2018 Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 bass. The model that I've got in for review is a white dual humbucker model with an off-white pickguard and a rosewood fretboard. Although if you're like me and rosewood isn't really your jam, you can also get it with a maple or ebony fretboard

 You can access the myriad of tonal expression via the combination of a three-band EQ and a guitar style five-way pickup selector switch, and the flexibility is really kind of absurd. Now I'm going to take you through the plethora of tonal options on the bass controls so that you can hear some of the different sounds that you can get out of the bass, and then I'll talk about it a little bit. The 2018 Stingray takes an already spectacular classic design and gives it a modern touch without losing what made it great in the first place

 The new 18-volt preamp allows a cleaner and more dynamic expression with the increased headroom. A small but really nice improvement is the tuner buttons. I had a Stingray many years ago with the old-style tuners that were just flat, and they were not very friendly on the fingers, but these are nicely tapered, rounded, and slightly thicker in the middle, and are very comfortable to use. Like many of the changes made to this new model, it's kind of a quality of life upgrade, because like I said before, the Stingray was already great

The tradeoff is that the body is highly resonant and the other strings are prone to sympathetic vibration as a result which I find difficult to control when playing with a pick. Removing the aforementioned treble pickup cover should make that more manageable. tl;dr I'm satisfied with my purchase but I would recommend trying to play at least one Rickenbacker bass in a store before buying one anywhere to see if they're a good fit for you, because they won't be a good fit for everyone.

You've got a maple body You've got maple neck the neck is a neck through construction, so it actually goes all the way through the body to the tailpiece You've got four deluxe Shaler tuners on here that are open back You've got a You've got a Thick thick slab of rosewood on here that Just I don't know it feels great like the front of this is a lacquered it's just maybe not as heavy as just a regular 4003 but Still feels really good got 20 frets with absolutely no for it rough fret ends Polished very well done very well You've got the electronics on here, which are pretty basic you have three-way toggle switch you've got a your bridge volume neck volume bridge tone neck tone and in the in the bridge town pot if you pull it out it gives you more of a vintage It gives you more of a vintage it revoices the bass, so it sounds more of like a vintage rickenbacker Now one of the things that's pretty cool is like you know rickenbacker is one of those instruments that's played by so many people you know whether it's been Paul McCartney or You know Lammy or shoot even Rick James played a rickenbacker and And they're just I don't know man. You're gonna be hard-pressed to find a cooler looking bass a Couple other things you've got two single-coiled rickenbacker single coil pickups on here now Myself personally I know that it's really popular to usually a lot of most bass players will take the bridge cover off For right now

Rickenbacker 4003s Review

 The shop wanted $1749 for this matte-black 4003s and wouldn't move much on the price, so I passed. I asked sweetwater if they'd sell me a new one for $1699, and they said yes, but I'd have to wait a few months for a Mapleglo.

I started playing bass a year ago but have always admired the look of the Rickenbacker bass. When I first started hanging out in this subreddit, I heard some bad things about them, but then I played a used one at a guitar shop and really liked how it played and, of course, sounded. The shop wanted $1749 for this matte-black 4003s and wouldn't move much on the price, so I passed. I asked sweetwater if they'd sell me a new one for $1699, and they said yes, but I'd have to wait a few months for a Mapleglo

Gear Thread: Week of Sep. 27

The neck was unwieldly, the body shape felt horrible to play with it's sharp binding (perhaps the 4003S would not have the same issue), the bridge design made it feel horrible to play there, the bridge pickup cover really got in the way too, and after removing it you're left with a large cavity unless you buy an aftermarket fill in part. It didn't sound great in a mix, the double truss rod design was both unnecessary and made it a nightmare to setup. Although not an issue on the one I owned I've seen two other Rick basses where the fretboard was ungluing itself from the neck. I agree with other commentors that Rickenbacker seem to not have any desire to improve as they have a waitlist of people willing to pay full price for them

Ever since I can remember, I have wanted a Rickenbacker bass. I finally got one the other day and I couldn’t be more disappointed. I ordered a 4003S and it was delivered without issue. At first glance, everything looked good. I started to play up and down the neck and noticed, hmmmm, that’s odd…two separate spots on two different strings where the SAME note was played when playing two notes directly next to each other on the same string. Sounds like a high fret to me. 

I looked closer and one of the frets was actually coming OFF of the fretboard and being pushed up. The other had a visible gob of glue underneath raising it off the fretboard. This caused the incorrect notes to be played since the frets were way too high in comparison to the rest. The frets in general are sharp and not finished well. There are also numerous body finish issues, the largest of which is a darkened/burn mark I am guessing is from a sander being left on too long. 

All this to say that I am pretty bummed out. I will be returning the bass for a refund, but I really wanted it to work out. It does have that classic sound. I wanted to share this post as a bit of a heads up - Rickenbacker seemingly continues to have quality control issues. My bass was no exception. When you are dropping ~ $2k on a bass, some things just need to be done properly. Happy to share a link to pics for those interested.

Fair Warning - Rickenbacker

 I really wanted to thank everyone for the support, especially during this crazy time, and I really look forward to making a lot more great videos for you guys. So without further ado, today we're looking at a new Rickenbacker. That's right, a new Rickenbacker model. It's the 4003S-5

 The matte black finish is very prone to scratching, dings, and damage, and you have to take extra good care of it. Personally, I wish I went with the walnut finish, like my Rickenbacker 4003 4-string. So one thing I have to knock Rickenbacker for is the omission of a lot of features that are present on the regular 4003. Most notably, the stereo rick-o-sound jack and the shark fin inlays

 Let's take a look. So this is the Rickenbacker 4003S-5 five-string bass. So this is a new model from Rickenbacker unveiled at the Winter NAMM Show in 2018, and this is a new RICK in the truest sense of the word. This bass features newly designed single-coil pickups in this triangular Dorito or pizza-shaped pattern right here

 It's got just your regular Rickenbacker single coil pickups. It has just standard bridge, the pickup cover, same tuners, but this one's got kind of a cool matte black finish that we just found out about. We didn't even know that Rickenbacker did this. It's very smooth to the touch

 It has a mono output as opposed to the standard Ricoh sound. It does however still have the pull for vintage knob, which is nice. It's kind of like a low cut. It gives you that classic Rickenbacker snarly kind of sound
