The special has such an amazing mid range that means it will fit in the mix much better and has a more vintage tone. I absolutely adore it but I can't afford it yet so instead I'm using a Sterling with the treble cut and pressure wound strings to emulate it. Imo though the stingray special can do the classic stingray sound easily plus more sounds in a way other models can't do as well.

I personally don’t have any experience with Yamaha basses, but I have the Ibanez SR505E, the newer version of the bass you mentioned. The elixir strings that come with this bass will be bright when you first start to play it. A combination of breaking in the strings (i.e. play for a while on them) and more importantly, adjusting the EQ on the bass to roll off some of the highs, will resolve the brightness on these strings
