Sire M7 6 string is a bit more than your target price, but worth way more in my opinion.

If buying a new Epiphone please trust me one this.. Change the strings!!! I could not find and exact match but the closest I found in gauge were all the same except for the A string being .085 in a set of Ernie Ball Hybrid slinky roundwounds - which worked perfectly

If you're expecting the deep rumble of something like a Fender Jazz bass, don't hold your breath because the EB0 is a short scale - it has decent bass, yes, but not that earth moving deep thump. For smaller hands, the EB0 ranks right up there in playability as the Hofner Beatle Bass or one of the short scale Gretsh Bass guitars. I was a bit disappointed that the guitar required so much user attention/interaction right out of the case, but what came out of it was decent enough. I think the $200

Was looking for something more trebly and melodic than my Precision. Went to the store, tried some basses. Didn't know much about the Marcus Miller Sire basses, but fell in love immediately. The guy at the store even said "I could tell you liked that one", because I was jamming on it for quite some time haha

It still played alright, and it wasn’t one of those instruments that’s so bad as to actually make your playing worse, but there was just nothing about it that I especially liked, and plenty that I disliked. The sound was fine but it just wasn’t any fun to play.

Consider a Sire Marcus Miller bass. Amazing value and playability. I’ve been ignoring my Dingwall a lot since picking up a V5 on a whim.
