The best powered speakers under $200 are the Neumi BS5P. (They are better than the R1700BT someone else mentioned.)

If you need a subwoofer output for the option of adding a sub later, then look at the Edifier R1850DB.

 If we want to test that out, we can pull up Siri real, quick and say play some fun music on the IKEA speaker and after just a second. It does think because this was just set up a half a second ago, it'll automatically start playing some Purdy music on the IKEA speaker right here to my left. Not only can you play the music play pause, all of that change tracks. You can change the volume too, so everything is very nice and you can access it with control center same as all of your other airplay speakers

 So we now have wireless surround speakers to go with our beam on either end and we don't have to have anything sitting on our tables taking up space, it's very, very nice to have these mount to the wall. We don't have to buy an expensive stand, or even some other expensive mounts that may or may not perfectly fit with these. So for an extra twenty bucks to add an amount to these, we definitely recommend it in the end with a simple, clean design in a sub 100 price tag, and so no sound. We absolutely love the new Symphonica bookshelf speakers, so that is it

 You need surround speakers to go with it, possibly even a subwoofer too. So with these, we mounted them in our living room, one on either side and added them as remote surround speakers. So we now have wireless surround speakers to go with our beam on either end and we don't have to have anything sitting on our tables taking up space, it's very, very nice to have these mount to the wall.  It sounds very reminiscent of all the other sono speakers and fits into the ecosystem very well, which is probably good, because you picked up a cheap Sonos like this one here and a nice Sonos play:1 or something and you played them together. It'S going to be very mismatched here they sound like they go well together. There is definitely not nearly as much bass as with the home pod and the home probably sounds a little bit better than the symphonic bookshelf speaker, but it adds a little bit more bass when we added it to the wall. So we only actually had this mounted versus sitting on our table

The Symfonisk picture frame costs £179 ($199) and joins Ikea’s other unusual speakers – one is in a shelf while another is a table lamp – which are all fully compatible with Sonos’s whole-home wireless audio system.

The idea is to make speakers that blend into the background by being more like furniture than standing out as a piece of technology. The frame can be hung on the wall or simply lent against it on the floor in either landscape or portrait orientation. It comes in black or white and has a line and dot pattern printed on the front, which may not be everyone’s idea of art but would not look out of place in a modern hotel room.

Those looking for really pounding low notes might be a bit disappointed but the frame sounds great with most music genres. The Sonos One still sounds a little better all-round but it is very close.

Those with an iPhone or iPad can perform the automatic “Trueplay” tuning to help the speaker sound its best but it sounded spot-on straight out of the box. You can manually tweak the bass, treble and “loudness” and set a volume limit in the Sonos app, too.

>The product is not currently repairable by Ikea, although replacement cords and other parts are available. It does not contain any recycled material nor does Ikea publish individual environmental impact assessments. But the offers a recycling scheme for its products and publishes an annual sustainability report.

Sonos commits to supporting feature updates through software on its own products for at least five years after it stops selling a product but has a track record of much longer, including bug and security fixes for its legacy products. The Symfonisk range will receive similar levels of support.

**Verdict**

Ikea isn’t the first company to try to blend a speaker with wall art but it might be the most successful, thanks in no small part to Sonos’s audio and software magic and a comparatively low price.

It is easy to set up, simple to use, supports a wide range of music services and will be supported by the Sonos system for years to come. It sounds really good for the money and a unique shape, too.

I can certainly see the appeal of having a speaker hung out the way on a wall but whether you think it is art is another thing. While it doesn’t look like a speaker, it is more obvious than either Sonos’s small One bookshelf speaker or Ikea’s other wifi speakers, so it will have to fit in with your decor.

*Pros: good sound, well designed, can be hung or stood against a wall in portrait or landscape, easy setup, Sonos control, wide support for music services, can be paired up, optional ethernet, new front plates available at later date.*

The speaker can be used on its own or in a stereo pair. You can even daisy-chain two with an optional £2 connection cord so that only one of the speakers needs to be plugged into a socket.

The frame operates like any other Sonos speaker streaming music over wifi, not Bluetooth, and can be grouped with any other Ikea or Sonos speakers you might have to play music simultaneously all over the house.

The Sonos system supports practically every streaming music service, including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and BBC radio, which can all be controlled via the Sonos app. Alternatively, you can use AirPlay 2 to stream straight from an iPhone, iPad or Mac, or Spotify Connect.

It sounds wide, well balanced and rounded, easily filling a room and getting very loud indeed. It has clarity a cut above many simpler wifi or Bluetooth speakers, with punchy treble, sharp highs and a reasonable amount of bass.

Those looking for really pounding low notes might be a bit disappointed but the frame sounds great with most music genres. The Sonos One still sounds a little better all-round but it is very close.

Those with an iPhone or iPad can perform the automatic “Trueplay” tuning to help the speaker sound its best but it sounded spot-on straight out of the box. You can manually tweak the bass, treble and “loudness” and set a volume limit in the Sonos app, too.

The frame doesn’t have any microphones, so while it can be controlled via Amazon’s Alexa or Google’s Assistant on another device or phone, it is not a smart speaker.

Price

The Ikea/Sonos speaker costs £179 ($199) and is available in black or white.

For comparison, the Symfonisk bookshelf speaker costs £89, the Symfonisk table lamp costs £150, the Sonos One SL costs £179, the Sonos One costs £199 and Sonos’s In-Wall speakers cost £599 for a pair but need to be built into the wall and connected to the separate £599 Amp.

Verdict

Ikea isn’t the first company to try to blend a speaker with wall art but it might be the most successful, thanks in no small part to Sonos’s audio and software magic and a comparatively low price.

It is easy to set up, simple to use, supports a wide range of music services and will be supported by the Sonos system for years to come. It sounds really good for the money and a unique shape, too.

I can certainly see the appeal of having a speaker hung out the way on a wall but whether you think it is art is another thing. While it doesn’t look like a speaker, it is more obvious than either Sonos’s small One bookshelf speaker or Ikea’s other wifi speakers, so it will have to fit in with your decor.

Pros: good sound, well designed, can be hung or stood against a wall in portrait or landscape, easy setup, Sonos control, wide support for music services, can be paired up, optional ethernet, new front plates available at later date.

Cons: art may not be everyone’s taste, can’t have your own art prints, more obvious than a small bookshelf speaker, no smart speaker mics, no Bluetooth or line in, still needs a dangling power cord if hung.

 Maybe I am doing something wrong but have not figured out how to do it and I am an engineer so beware. It is far less useful to me because I can not stream music simultaneously to other powered speakers speakers connected to the AUX output of the Echo. The sound is bassy with less than an ideal high frequency presence but still a pleasant sound if you tolerate music played with a heavier bass influence. The bass from the small speaker is impressive for how low it goes and impact relative to its size but it won't be mistaken for a high quality larger speaker either other than it does impress for its size

The Ikea Symfonisk is a Sonos speaker w/o Alexa built in so primarily a wifi/Bluetooth speaker. I was able to play music through it from my Google Echo but not simultaneously with the Echo connected to other devices. Maybe I am doing something wrong but have not figured out how to do it and I am an engineer so beware. Seems you can put it directly against the wall with no change in response so not sure how it is ported but you can wall mount this with no problem and they have special mounts for it. Bluetooth Speaker - 175 USD

Assuming you're talking about the Symfonisk bookshelf speakers, bigger *is* better, and the Ones have a slightly bigger driver. But you're not going to notice any appreciable difference in surround for most movies and TV shows. You might notice a slight difference in music with surrounds set to full, but I doubt it. The Symfs' primary deficit relative to the Ones is slightly weaker bass response, and that's going to covered up by the Sub

Probably. They are worth trying if you can return them to a nearby IKEA. If you also live near a Costco, you can get their Sonos One SL two pack and do a head to head comparison in your space. Both companies have generous return policies.

I had them with SONOS Beam and was not happy - I replaced them to SONOS One‘s and I‘m much happier :)
