This is my first shakedown request. I've learned a ton from this sub, but probably not enough. Fuck me up.

I'm heading to Mount Mitchell (highest elevation east of the Mississippi, a dizzying 6700 feet! /s) in North Carolina for a 3-4 day trip with a friend. We're looking at 50-60 miles, and a \~4500 ft climb on Day 1. I'm dealing with a not-so-fun foot injury (PT says tendinopathy or plantar fasciitis). Lightening up my pack could make a big difference.

**Goal BPW:** 10 lbs

**Budget:** $500, but only 9 days until we head out

**Location**: Mount Mitchell and surrounding peaks, North Carolina

**Temp range:** Between 50 and 80 degrees

**Specific trip description:** Head to trailhead Thursday night and start hiking Friday morning. Roughly 10 miles and a \~4500 ft climb our first day, camping at Deep Gap. 15-20 miles on Day 2, sleeping somewhere along Big Butt Trail depending on how we're feeling. Another 15-20 mi on Day 3, and if we haven't finished by the end of the day, a couple more miles to complete the loop on Day 4.

First Shakedown Request: Mount Mitchell in North Carolina

 I am going to chalk that up to luck. However, it is more durable than the X-Drop. I think overall this is a good tent and will be doing some more field testing soon. Also, moving forward I am going to be more cautious

 You need a ground sheet. I know this because there is a hole in my brand new tent. On the way home I stopped by REI and got some tenuous tape and the issue is resolved for now. Also, I ordered a pre-cut piece of Tyvek that will be here sometime this week

Overall Pleased

Since I'm a tall dude I ended up with the Durston X-Mid 2p (long enough to fit me + enough room for the dog), a monster of a quilt (UGQ Bandit XL at max dimensions), and a full size sleeping pad. Hope y'all are doing well and staying safe!.

 It's silpoly, so no sag like silnylon. It's also significantly lighter than the Ultamid 4, and can also be used fly-only if desired.

Hi, all. Planning my first thru. Does anyone have advice/experience on campsite opportunities for the Colorado Trail--how big of a tent could one usually fit?

I'm hoping to make camp in low(er) use areas if I can just to be more dispersed and choosey. But I know the terrain is a factor, and combined with the realities of daily mileage, I understand I might have to stay at the more established sites. As a result, I expect sometimes I'll just be stuck with whatever flat ground has been previously dished out, and I expect it'll be for "smaller" tents. Hopefully this is a fair understanding.

Reason I ask is that I'm considering upsizing from a Stratospire Li to an Ultamid 4. The use case is two adults with wide shoulders and one of us is 6'2". We just fit inside the SS Li inner tent for our overnight trips, tall person's bag is usually touching some part of the mesh. It's fine, but I wonder if more room on a thru hike would be better.

We used to use an Ultamid 2 but did not like how the wall slope made it impossible to sit up without wiping shoulders against the tent. The two separate peaks of the SS Li are great for that--good on Henry at Tarptent. I know the silnylon SS is larger, but I just don't like sag and water absorption, otherwise I'd convert to that. So, sticking to DCF.

Yes, I know an Ultamid 4 with either half/full inner is more or less double the weight of the SS Li, and a good bit more pack volume too. But, this is all in the pursuit of just having a better time when we do sleep/change/pack up/hide out in a storm. A little less "UL" and a little more "HYOH" on this choice. I worked a lot to reduce base weights to ~12 and 14 lbs respectively, so otherwise in good shape.

Tent/Campsite Sizes on Colorado Trail

 Nylon eventually absorbs water and sags- everyone that’s had experience with sil nylon knows what I’m talking about here. So with the xmid, you don’t get any wet sag or saturated fabric.  Well, I could go on and on about convenient pockets, high quality zippers, the titanium stakes that come with it but I’ll use the final bit of your patience to add one of the most important features of all the Durston Gear. That’s Dan Durstons accessibility to answer questions

 Second, the tent comes with 2 guy lines that attach to the two peaks ... I’ve pitched on top of exposed ridges and been blasted by monster storms

  The material is made from sil/poly, not sil/nylon. This is important because most tents are made with nylon. Nylon eventually absorbs water and sags- everyone that’s had experience with sil nylon knows what I’m talking about here. So with the xmid, you don’t get any wet sag or saturated fabric

PRICE IS NOT $650 it’s $300 beware gougers

 To that I would say that it's right on par with most other ultralight 2 person backpacking tents, and you don't need to find the perfect site for the entire tent: you just need to find a good spot that fits the interior. The height of either end can be adjusted by changing the trekking pole length, allowing you to pitch on uneven terrain. I've spent 3 nights in it so far, with my 85 lb dog, in below freezing temps, wind, and rain, and it has held up like a rock.  Overall, this is THE best backpacking tent I've ever owned

The North Face Wawona 6, a long-standing favorite in this review, is the perfect basecamp for mountain bikers, rock climbers, anglers, hunters, or anyone packing lots of gear that needs to be protected. Why? The vestibule is like a two-bike garage. The main tent packs an additional 85 square feet, creating a truly remarkable living space. The Wawona has you covered and all for a very fair price. 
All this space does make a few things less straightforward. Setting up the rain fly and garage in the moderate wind isn't as intuitive as it could be. The North Face went with a pin and circle locking mechanism that requires some effort to lock, and because of the height and length of this tent, the guylines are a requirement unless you enjoy watching your tent sail away into the sunset. That said, once this tent is set up, it is massive, comfortable, and withstood some howling winds and rainy nights in Joshua Tree with ease. With some of the best usable space and an excellent price point, the Wawona has been an award winner year after year with good reason. 

Switchback Travel

The North Face can be hit or miss in the camping market, but they have a winner in their Wawona collection. Updated fairly recently, the biggest shift was to a hybrid double-wall construction (the prior generation used a less breathable single-wall build), and they also retooled the pole structure to make setup easier. Offered in four- and six-person capacities, the tunnel-like design is reminiscent of REI’s Wonderland 6 below and provides a generous amount of interior space, including around 3 more square feet of floor area and an additional 2 inches of peak height—all for around $125 less. And we love the massive front vestibule (44.7 sq. ft.) that easily doubles as a seating area—to achieve the same versatility with the Wonderland, you’ll have to purchase the Mud Room add-on ($125) separately. Added up, the Wawona is an impressively livable design and an excellent all-around value.

That said, despite the updated pole structure, we still found the Wawona to be considerably time-consuming and tedious to set up. The vestibule in particular must be guyed out tightly to stay upright, and the unique pole structure took some time to get taut and secure. The upside is that the hybrid double-wall build vents considerably better than a single-wall tent like the NEMO Wagontop below, and it’s also less prone to collecting moisture in humid or rainy weather. Final nitpicks include the rainfly, which doesn’t cover the lower portion of the tent, and the all-mesh door can be a source of serious heat loss and drafts in the cold (for a more weather-worthy option, see REI’s Base Camp below). But no tent is perfect, and the Wawona’s mesh-heavy build, expansive interior, and reasonable cost earn it our top billing for 2022.See The North Face Wawona 6

The North Face Wawona 6 is one of our favorite tents for family camping trips. The roomy interior has plenty of standing height, easily sleeps a family of 4 and two dogs, and has an adequate number of pockets for storage and organization. We love the extra large outer vestibule and find it very handy for storing larger gear like bikes or a fishing pole and tackle box, so there is more room inside for sleeping. This roomy outer area adds nearly 1/3 to the usable space of the tent. It is great for gear storage, but if you pack light, we enjoy it just as much for hanging out in the shade to take in the view. The sturdy build and well-vented construction keep you comfortable in most types of weather, whether hot, cold, wet, or windy.
While not the biggest beast we've had to tackle, the setup and take-down process for the Wawona 6 is a bit more involved than we'd like. The tent poles fit very snug, and we found getting the last one into its proper slot challenging. The rain fly attaches via a ring and pin system that holds the fly securely to the tent but seems disproportionately challenging to operate. Lastly, we weren't impressed with the storage bag. It looks like it takes inspiration from a rope bag with a drawstring opening that doesn't ever fully close. Although these things make setup and take-down a bit more complicated than other tents, it is still not enough to prevent us from loving this tent. The high-quality build and materials make this a sturdy option that will last through years of family camp trips.

 So it can't be set up without it. This means the footprint of the tent is quite large, roughly ten by eight feet, so pick your camping spot wisely, this tent sports, a single wall design. That is waterproof, which i will praise in more detail later, while a single individual could pitch the webona six, i would definitely recommend a second set of hands. It was quite the challenge, as you could see a small detail, but a welcome one is the color-coded poles and the tent hooks four said poles

 What'S more, i had only used eight out of the 14 potential tie-down points during the entirety of the storm. It barely moved.  The partial coverage rainfly could be an issue in a heavy or all day rain - time will tell.

The vestibule

 With that said, the bottom is thick and should hold up ok if you decide to not purchase it separately.  -Is marketed as a 6 man tent but that would be a little tight. Im not saying you couldnt get 6 people in this tent but we have a family of 4 (two little kids) and we are wall to wall. We could maybe fit an additional person at our feet but there is no way you could get 6 adults in this tent

  Overall I am very happy with this tent though and would buy it again. Love the vestibule, simplicity of setup and storage options. Thanks for reading.

Comfortable Tent With a Few Things To Be Aware Of

 I will still give this tent a five star rating regardless of issues because of ease and features.

Great tent and easy to set up.

 I'Ve got one of them open right. There and just on the other side right there same door on that side, so I've got one side of this opened up on the other side closed. So you've just got this large opening right here. It is basically just a window you're going to have to shut that if it's raining up top, you do have this vent window up here this you can open up and it looks like if the rain is not blowing

 You could lay some bags and stuff out here. So, there's quite a bit of room, especially with how wide it is, there's, definitely a lot of room back there and you do have door access back here that you can get into the door is attached at the top, so it will just kind of drape down And hang right where you're sitting and so what I would call the front vestibule or the main vestibule, this thing's huge got a nice big door opening here I have to dump just a little bit to get in here, but I can stand up once I'm inside Of it, if this enough of my head will hit the bottom of it, but if I said -- and I can stand up without touching it look inside so coming into the vestibule when using the footprint for this, you do get this kind of foot mat thing That you can step on before you get into the tent. I like to kick my shoes off here and then step on the mat and say you're, not dragging a bunch of debris and stuff into your tent, so from the inside there's the back door that we looked at first and it is just attached across here. You do have two toggles here, that you can roll the door up and get it up out of your way in all four corners

 We decided to go with the six, give us a little more moving room, and so I've got the new will load. A six from the North Face thanks huge weighs in at twenty-one pounds sells for 399 has 86 square feet of space in it the North Face. Basically took their Kaju six with the head last year, which was a double wall tent, which I don't know if you've ever tried to put a rain fly over top of a six person tent. You need a small team of flying creatures to kind of pull the finger over that, so they kind of want with a hybrid kind of single wool, open mesh shown, doors and stuff, so just to try to make it a lot easier to put up

 So anyway, fitting for people that I'm going to have in here we'll have plenty of room alright. So I'm not sure if I mentioned it earlier, but this large vestibule know right here. There is another one, just like it on the other side of the vestibule. So you can open both of them up and get plenty of airflow through there

THE NORTH FACE WAWONA 6 PERSON TENT OVERVIEW

 Zippers work smoothly. Cons: Windows don't open from the inside, storage bag provided is not structured at all and packs up pretty bulky.

We bought this last summer for car camping with a family of 3 + a big dog. It's held up well on 4 big trips and in plenty of rainstorms. Pros: Optional vents keep it cool in rainy weather, good amount of windows to open, plenty of interior storage pockets, cords running along the top are great for hanging up damp stuff. Vestibule is roomy enough for a shoe pile, a firewood stack, or a quick meal in rainy weather
