This is my first shakedown request. I've learned a ton from this sub, but probably not enough. Fuck me up.

I'm heading to Mount Mitchell (highest elevation east of the Mississippi, a dizzying 6700 feet! /s) in North Carolina for a 3-4 day trip with a friend. We're looking at 50-60 miles, and a \~4500 ft climb on Day 1. I'm dealing with a not-so-fun foot injury (PT says tendinopathy or plantar fasciitis). Lightening up my pack could make a big difference.

**Goal BPW:** 10 lbs

**Budget:** $500, but only 9 days until we head out

**Location**: Mount Mitchell and surrounding peaks, North Carolina

**Temp range:** Between 50 and 80 degrees

**Specific trip description:** Head to trailhead Thursday night and start hiking Friday morning. Roughly 10 miles and a \~4500 ft climb our first day, camping at Deep Gap. 15-20 miles on Day 2, sleeping somewhere along Big Butt Trail depending on how we're feeling. Another 15-20 mi on Day 3, and if we haven't finished by the end of the day, a couple more miles to complete the loop on Day 4.

First Shakedown Request: Mount Mitchell in North Carolina

 I am going to chalk that up to luck. However, it is more durable than the X-Drop. I think overall this is a good tent and will be doing some more field testing soon. Also, moving forward I am going to be more cautious

 You need a ground sheet. I know this because there is a hole in my brand new tent. On the way home I stopped by REI and got some tenuous tape and the issue is resolved for now. Also, I ordered a pre-cut piece of Tyvek that will be here sometime this week

Overall Pleased

Since I'm a tall dude I ended up with the Durston X-Mid 2p (long enough to fit me + enough room for the dog), a monster of a quilt (UGQ Bandit XL at max dimensions), and a full size sleeping pad. Hope y'all are doing well and staying safe!.

 It's silpoly, so no sag like silnylon. It's also significantly lighter than the Ultamid 4, and can also be used fly-only if desired.

Hi, all. Planning my first thru. Does anyone have advice/experience on campsite opportunities for the Colorado Trail--how big of a tent could one usually fit?

I'm hoping to make camp in low(er) use areas if I can just to be more dispersed and choosey. But I know the terrain is a factor, and combined with the realities of daily mileage, I understand I might have to stay at the more established sites. As a result, I expect sometimes I'll just be stuck with whatever flat ground has been previously dished out, and I expect it'll be for "smaller" tents. Hopefully this is a fair understanding.

Reason I ask is that I'm considering upsizing from a Stratospire Li to an Ultamid 4. The use case is two adults with wide shoulders and one of us is 6'2". We just fit inside the SS Li inner tent for our overnight trips, tall person's bag is usually touching some part of the mesh. It's fine, but I wonder if more room on a thru hike would be better.

We used to use an Ultamid 2 but did not like how the wall slope made it impossible to sit up without wiping shoulders against the tent. The two separate peaks of the SS Li are great for that--good on Henry at Tarptent. I know the silnylon SS is larger, but I just don't like sag and water absorption, otherwise I'd convert to that. So, sticking to DCF.

Yes, I know an Ultamid 4 with either half/full inner is more or less double the weight of the SS Li, and a good bit more pack volume too. But, this is all in the pursuit of just having a better time when we do sleep/change/pack up/hide out in a storm. A little less "UL" and a little more "HYOH" on this choice. I worked a lot to reduce base weights to ~12 and 14 lbs respectively, so otherwise in good shape.

Tent/Campsite Sizes on Colorado Trail

 Nylon eventually absorbs water and sags- everyone that’s had experience with sil nylon knows what I’m talking about here. So with the xmid, you don’t get any wet sag or saturated fabric.  Well, I could go on and on about convenient pockets, high quality zippers, the titanium stakes that come with it but I’ll use the final bit of your patience to add one of the most important features of all the Durston Gear. That’s Dan Durstons accessibility to answer questions

 Second, the tent comes with 2 guy lines that attach to the two peaks ... I’ve pitched on top of exposed ridges and been blasted by monster storms

  The material is made from sil/poly, not sil/nylon. This is important because most tents are made with nylon. Nylon eventually absorbs water and sags- everyone that’s had experience with sil nylon knows what I’m talking about here. So with the xmid, you don’t get any wet sag or saturated fabric

PRICE IS NOT $650 it’s $300 beware gougers

 To that I would say that it's right on par with most other ultralight 2 person backpacking tents, and you don't need to find the perfect site for the entire tent: you just need to find a good spot that fits the interior. The height of either end can be adjusted by changing the trekking pole length, allowing you to pitch on uneven terrain. I've spent 3 nights in it so far, with my 85 lb dog, in below freezing temps, wind, and rain, and it has held up like a rock.  Overall, this is THE best backpacking tent I've ever owned

 So there's clips right here, there's four of them, and then there's also these little clips here to make it extra sturdy. Also, all of these poles that help set the tent up and the rain fly clips have a color coating system so that it's really easy to set up. We always start with blue, and then there's black, and then silver. We can have this tent set up in less than five minutes

 And it also comes with these guy lines just in case you can't drive that stake in the ground and you need to extend it a little bit more to get a good spot. Now let's check out the inside of the tent. First of all, the fact that I can almost stand up in this tent is a huge bonus because getting dressed in a tent where you have to lay down or sit down is really hard. Also, you've already seen the two massive doors and check this out

 Hey friends, today we're going to be giving you a review of the REI Basecamp 4 four-person tent

 and we're going to let you know why we chose this tent for our 50 states tour.

 For starters, we love how easy this tent is to set up.

 In case you're new here, we are MK and TJ and we are tent camping in all 50 states.

 We have camped so far in heat, cold, snow, rain, you name it, which is why we are super

 excited to show you this tent because we camped nine states in the old one and this one it's

 Alright, let's get started by talking about the tent specs.

 The dimensions are 100 by 86 by 60 inches tall.

 The floor is made out of a 150 denier polyester Oxford, which is scratch and puncture resistant.

 And the polyester rain fly is stretch and UV ray resistant.

 And the large vestibule is 27 square feet and the small vestibule is 17 square feet.

 Next, let's talk about the setup of this tent.

 It has the typical X frame that starts here, it crosses up at the top in the middle and

 But it also has these other two bars that cross over in front of the doors.

 So there's clips right here, there's four of them, and then there's also these little
