 Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

I bought these boots both for working at a retail store, as well as for it's look. I'll soon be out of retail, but I'll continue wearing the boots throughout the fall and winter, and likely into spring as well.  It does take about a month on average to break the boots in. Also, you might need some vaseline/petroleum jelly to put on the outside of the tongue on the boot (in between the laces too) to keep the boots from constantly squeaking

Sturdy, Practical & Stylish Boots (And Tons of Compliments)

 I am a Longshoreman and wear these in all kinds of weather and need to have good grip and traction. I am very satisfied. Only downfall is rain/ water does easily discolor the boots but they dry

 They feel comfy though, with thicker socks. They do make your feet hurt at first but you'll get used to it. I got a lot of compliments using them! Even though they look big, I still love them. Favorite item in my closet

Quality was pretty bad though, there were stitching problems all over the place, especially the pull tabs. I'd have been pissed if I paid full retail for them.

Been lurking around for a while, so I figured I should contribute by posting a 5 Year Review of my Rag &amp; Bone boots.

I  bought these in 2016 on clearance. I paid \~$200, original retail was  \~$400. As the pictures show, they are a brown roughout leather. They are  fully lined and include some nice details such as a gusseted tongue.  Rag &amp; Bone didn't make these boots themselves and details about  construction are limited, other than they are made in the USA by a  factory which "specializes in functional workwear and military standard  boots" (as per a Highsnobiety article from 2012) and they are goodyear  welted. Any guesses who could have made these?

Though  I've only dipped my toe into high end footwear (these, my Allen  Edmonds, and my Thursday boots define my experience) I can say these are  a quality build. In the five years I've owned them I've worn them on a  daily basis through fall and winter each year. They've walked up  mountains and on sandy beaches. They've visited two continents and have  accompanied me on countless journeys. In short, they've been a loyal  companion through my adventures over the past five years.

Maintenance  has been minimal. I clean them every few months with a low grade boot  cleaner left over from my days in the Army. I use shoe trees off and on.  The laces are original, but since owning these I've resoled them twice  and replaced the insole with Sole orthotics.  Overall, the boots look  pretty good in my opinion. There's some dye from my jeans, but  burnishing is minimal, the stitching is still tight, and these are good  to go for another five years.

Rag  &amp; Bone isn't a company which I normally seek out for footwear, but  similar to some J.Crew or Brooks Brothers, when they put some effort  into it they know how to make (or specify the make for a 3rd party) a  solid pairs of shoes. These boots have certainly far exceeded my  expectations, especially given the $200 I paid for them.
