I've been wanting to upgrade to an MC cartridge for awhile and the opportunity recently presented itself via a NIB Denon DL-110 from Japan at an affordable price. My fears that my Musical Fidelity V90-LPS would have insufficient gain to drive it were immediately proven to be unfounded as I'm able to obtain a comfortable listening level at about 11 o'clock on the dial on my Cambridge Audio 640A amplifier. First impressions are very good, considering that the cart hasn't even begun to break in yet. It's already an improvement over my 2M Blue and Nagaoka MP-110 which were my top MM carts in my collection

 I had 6 dB attenuators, but even with the level at 0, the recording would clip. 12" dance singles will need another 6 dB on top of the 12!  I highly recommend this cartridge for medium/heavy mass tonearms, like my Pioneer. Best if you can adjust the tonearm height (Vertical Tracking Angle), so you get the best sound. Also a protractor like I mentioned above will help with the overhang and alignment

 Dropping the needle on Micheal Jackson's Billy Jean from "Thriller", another track that give cartridges issues, played very well. The sound stage width is very nice, too.  As far as output, it is plenty loud. I record LPs onto a Tascam DR-05X and had to place a pair 12 dB attenuators in line to give me some level adjustment

 My Blue Point slurred the S's and the Audio Technica cartridge on my Technics SL-1700 also was very sibilant. The Denon reproduces the S's very sharply with no overt sibilance. Dropping the needle on Micheal Jackson's Billy Jean from "Thriller", another track that give cartridges issues, played very well. The sound stage width is very nice, too

I used this cartridge in the latest Rega RP3, NAD 350, HD650, very clear but with a harsh edge. I am now using a Grado Reference Platinum 2, which is as clear as the Denon but smoother. The Denon is very good but a bit aggressive. My preference is the Grado

 Even the bass sounds like high notes. Let me repeat that. The BASS sounds like high notes.  Even after 20 hours of break-in, there was no improvement

 The popping went away in Phono, so I figured no big deal, swapped to Phono and:  Issue 2: So. Much. Treble. If I were to graph it: 2/10 on bass, 0/10 on mid, 11/10 on treble

The Vinyl Attack!

 Why? Well the E3 is a great all around cartridge. Very musical. But the Ortofon presents a little more rhythm and pace, and I do listen to a lot of music that appreciates that quality.  I still have the E3 on the basis, so that is a testament to its quality of sound, no need to switch it out right now

A good alternative to an Ortofon 2m Blue, musical entry level cartridge

 The difference between those and the synthesized parts were obvious, but in a way that made sense as the two were meant to be played off of each other to begin with. The track Tetsuo had big, booming drums and much more delicate bells at the same time, which isn't what I would call moral on a standard piece of music you'd hear on the radio today. Yet, the E3 was able to reproduce all of these sounds and not lose focus. Was their claim of stereo separation accurate? Yeah, I'd say so, as I heard a wonderful soundstage with all the bells and tones in this melodic passage

 Lastly, for my opinion anyway, this shape can be a slight deterrent when dropping the needle. It's bulkier look hides the stylus fairly well underneath, so you'll want to take care when placing it on a record for play. But, with those things aside, I would say that for about $170, if you're in the market for a moving magnet cartridge that tracks well, has excellent stereo separation, quality, detail, and fine soundstage, the Goldring E3 is certainly worth putting on your shortlist. If you have any experience with this cart, or you've been thinking about it, or have questions about it, I'd love to hear about it in the comments section below

 After jumping in with the harsh-sounding explosion effects from the movie, the music in the first composition, Kaneda, comes in with fantastic presence. The percussive instruments were well-placed, well-balanced, and never overpower the choral vocals. The bass notes were deep and full with intelligible tone. All of the exotic instruments sounded as accurate as I imagined they would with my lack of experience hearing them

 Music Whenever I'm listening to a cart different from my own, whether for an in-home audition for purchase or for review purposes regarding the channel, I tend to keep my setup mostly the same. I don't mix up speakers or amps much, and I stick with my EAT Iglo Petite most of the time so I can hear what a cartridge is bringing to the system I already know. I realize many of you would like to know how the E3 sounds on more affordable systems as well, so I do a small amount of that to check balance, but the overall gathering of information here is done on my normal home setup as I'm looking for the cart's ability to read information and reproduce it. I've found that this method serves me best

The Goldring E3 Phono Cartridge Review

 Okay. The Beastie Boys joke aside. I just listened to this on one turntable and switched out the cartridges. So I was not doing a boom, boom A-B comparison

 And I think unless one knows exactly what type of sound signature they're going for, it makes sense to me that the Gold Ring E3 could be your first major upgrade on a turntable because the sound signature on this is fun. It's engaging. Personally, I don't know who wouldn't like this type of sound signature because if you're upgrading, chances are you're not going to, oh well this one doesn't sound quite as balanced as the Ortofon 2N Blue. If you're just upgrading to kind of I'm going to say a big boy cartridge but something a little bit better, please consider the Gold Ring E3 because this thing is so much fun

 But I know what this one sounds like. I don't remember how big the soundstage is. It's kind of hard to tell soundstage unless you're comparing one thing to the other and you can say yeah this one's bigger or it's not as big. In any regard, the E3 by Gold Ring does a fantastic job

 So if we're looking at sparkly to warm, it would be Ortofon 2N Blue, Gold Ring E3, and then the Nagaoka MP-110. So this is going to be the warmest out of the bunch. Not as exciting. The E3 is going to be kind of the fun cartridge right in the middle
