EDIT 9/29: thank you all for the responses—I wasn’t expecting so many! After some more consideration, the M1 MacBook Air sounds like it might actually be a better option than a gaming-specific laptop. I’ll wait and see what the M1X release looks like, but for now I’ll stick with an Apple product. Again I appreciate all of the help and suggestions!

Hi all! As the title says, I'm in the market for a new laptop to replace my rapidly aging Macbook Pro 2014 (13-inch). My parents are open to helping me make this purchase, and while they'd be open to a modern Macbook Pro cost, I'd prefer to move away from Apple.

Relatively important. I'd prefer something powerful but still professional-looking and sleek. I'd like to transport it with me to use in coffee shops, at friends' houses, etc., but I'd want to prioritize something powerful.

The 13-inch laptop I have is fine by me, but I wouldn't be averse to something larger.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'd love to do some basic video editing and photo editing (with something like Gimp for photos). I also want to play games like Stardew Valley on Steam.

I like to play Stardew Valley and Pokémon RomHacks, so anything that can run up to DS-style graphics smoothly is good by me!

I'd prefer no touch-screen (or at least the ability to turn it off). All that really matters is a good keyboard for writing and such as well as drives to plug in devices, backup hard drive, etc.

Ultimately I'd like a laptop that will let me play and emulate games, write, make videos and edit photos, and stream YouTube. If it's durable and will last me a while, that's another bonus.

The laptop I recieved was not capable of the specs that were listed. The build quality was terrible. It was supposed to a Dell xps 13 9310 but it had the look and feel of a Dell 3100 chromebook. There is a $1500 difference in the price between the two models but it seemed like Amazon thought they were the same

 Love the keyboard. I'm a mechanical-keyboard type of person, and while I typically hate low-profiles, I liked the keyboard on this laptop enough that it was the decision-making factor when it came down to a few options. Handles smaller games great, professional looking and would recommend to anyone using it for non-webcam related purposes.  Update: Some serious graphical glitches came with this laptop

 Otherwise it runs cool. I really like that there is no separate place to plug in the charger. It just uses one of the ports and so it can be connected on either side. Really nice laptop overall

 The battery life is very short (4ish hours) and it takes a long time to charge (about 1 1/2 hours). The brick on the cord gets very hot as it charges as does the bottom of the laptop. Otherwise it runs cool. I really like that there is no separate place to plug in the charger

Laptop seems to be working "ok" as of now besides the WiFi issues everyone has been having and apps like Netflix and Hulu not properly working. Another thing that is concerning is the packaging. I'm pretty sure I was sent a used product considering it came in a cheap cardboard box and not in it's original XPS box/packaging. The line of what i would consider a good laptop for a primary device anyway, let me wrap by saying this. The question: will i keep this laptop? The answer is yes, and if i'm going to keep this laptop for me, which i'm excited about, i certainly can recommend it for you.

After seeing many negative experiences with Dell products, especially XPS laptops, I wanted to share mine. Also shout out to u/figtop1814 because his post encouraged me to do the same. 

I bought this laptop (XPS 13 9310) a little bit more than two weeks ago on the Dell Outlet website. This was a new product, and the price was very great! Great specs (i7-1185, 16 RAM, 1TB SSD) for only abt 1300 after tax (US). I had a Thinkpad Nano, but had to return it because my model had a speaker issue. So far, the laptop works great, and damn it's pretty. I don't have any coil whine or battery issues or dead pixels or wtv and I really love this machine. I guess the only thing I could nitpick on is that the trackpad feels a little bit firm, but that's it. 

So yeah, if you're reading this and you're on the verge of buying an XPS, just do it. There are lemons out there, but it's a small minority of products. And besides, you can always just ask for a replacement or a return. You only have to send in your original model after the replacement arrives, that's what I've been told

Dell XPS 13 is a great device for people looking for a powerful laptop with a good battery life.

So maybe Dell will offer or launch those models later on, but for now, if you're shopping for an ultrabook, this should be on the top of your list or, if you're, someone coming from a basic 400 to 500 or laptop and if you're looking to upgrade to Something like the new XPS 13 you're in for a treat. The only thing really, the only thing that you need to watch out for is lack of i/o, because you're only getting two type-c ports and, if you're willing to bypass that. I mean it's not as good as amd's ryzen based solutions, but at the end of the day, if i take a step back and admire the rest of the hardware, things like this beautiful unibody construction, a fantastic keyboard and trackpad a display that just puts a smile On my face, all those factors just make me want to continue using this thing every day. Obviously i know what some of you guys might be thinking, apple's m1 macbook pros or microsoft. Surface laptops are great alternatives as well, which i don't deny in fact i hope to get my hands on those devices at some point, but for now i think it's time to ditch my razer book 13 for this laptop, because it's compact, it fits my messenger bag.
