  For another $10-$20 you can get speakers that are far better in quality. So I cannot recommend these. Spend your money on the Sony's, or on the excellent Miccas if Amazon gets more of them.  OK, one more update

let me be clear as to where these really rate. In a nutshell, they are good cheap speakers. They do not in any way compare to more expensive speakers, much less audiophile grade equipment. They are cheap speakers; cheap cabinets and cheap drivers

  The cabinet is simply too small for this size woofer. That means there's not enough air volume to allow the cone to move as it should. This hurts bass response and also low frequency volume. Since these are not ported, I decided to remedy that

  That said, they do produce stereo sound so if your sound system currently consists of a sound bar, or something similar, you will definitely notice a night and day difference in sound quality because they will produce true stereo separation. In addition, the B652s may make excellent rear surrounds in a surround sound system but I have never used them in this manner.  If you have never listened to better speakers and you have only used computer speakers or the cheap speakers that come with MP3 player docks in the past there is no reason you will not enjoy these speakers. Sound quality is up to the listener and the listener's experience is what often dictates what that person thinks about the quality of a pair of speakers

As an aside, I have very little experience with other similarly priced speakers so I have no basis of comparison to determine if the B652s are best in the price range.

 It is probably worth noting that I use my iPad as a source and had to download an equalizer app for my iPad to make the sound tolerable. Unfortunately, this means that I have to adjust the equalizer for different music styles. A few albums have never sounded quite right on these speakers and as a result I never listen to them on the B652s. For those of you who notice, I recognize that some of the problem is the MP3 encoding but not all of it because I have played CDs on them in the past with similar results

Good For The Price

  One online review noted that this is really an excellent "midrange" speaker with the 6.5" speaker providing most of the sound, the tweeter just a slice of upper range. A lot of two way book shelf speakers push the larger speaker to reproduce deeper bass so they can publish better specs - these speakers let the bass roll off naturally, but preserve natural voice qualities, where they excel.  The treble is actually a little bright, but not uncomfortably so

  One small, but nice (and important) touch is the rubber de-coupling pads on the base of each speaker. Instead of felt pads or thin rubber stickies, they put decent thickness rubber pads on, which help to reduce sound transmission and reverberations (I usually use florist's clay or a square of dense camping mat to accomplish the same thing).  For someone (me) who overspent on underdelivering speakers in the 70's, '80's, and early '90's, it's amazing the sound that comes out of these speakers. It goes to prove that careful design and consistent materials and manufacturing are about 85% of what it takes to produce musical speakers - the many "exotic materials" and "new technology" speakers that fell by the wayside just go to show that cost (in the past) doesn't guarantee better performance than mass-produced China-speakers from a parts company

  ****** update, 3-7-13  After more extended listening, I don't think the treble is bright. This is actually a nicely balanced speaker. It is light and compact, so it can't produce both a high volume AND a large dynamic range. It is fine for use on all channels except subwoofer on a den-sized home theater system (assuming you have a flat panel that is not affected by the minor magnetic effects of this unshielded speaker)

3 star quality (measured against $300-$500 speakers!), 5 star value!

 I kept my mind on the price paid @$36, but then the sound started to become nagging and there was no quality or dynamics - especially when comparing it to even a set of Micca’s that cost the same or other speakers that I have bought during the years. Their tweeters with the “upgraded” capacitor fix were not impressive either. These are $0.25 tweeters and sound like it

 Folks, these speakers are really a “get what you pay for”, they are NOT comparable to a $100 or $200 set of speakers many want to convince others and themselves. I know there is a cult following out there on these and many of them easily spent 2+ times what they paid just to make them sound decent. What is the point when you could just buy the Micca’s or similar (may have to save more) and get strait to enjoying and seeing those carbon fiber 4 inch woofers work. Right now, the Micca Club 3 are less than $40

 Ultimately, as you could probably figure, they were returned because I did not feel like having a set of speakers sitting in a brown box in my attic. I give Amazon 5 stars for their customer service and return process. I am giving these two stars only because of the price and are suitable for many who want to start out cheap and work their way up as funds become available. Sorry for the ranting and raving but I had to get this off my chest

These Are Just OK Speakers To Me

 All just simply hung against the drywall by the hook already attached. I'd feed them with Lepai 2020Ti's, each pair, and that would be it !! For $200 bucks, it sounds as good as an HK sound room. At 1/2 volume, it will blow you out of the seat, and the kids will be screaming because their ears are bleeding. As anyone knows, a well matched set blows pure watts and amps out of the water anyday

..glue on some more pdf, or just hang them against wood/drywall. These are inexpensive speakers BUT THEY ARE NOT CHEAP SPEAKERS !! AND I OWN INFINITY RS SERIES !!! If I was going to build a decent sounding home theatre, I'd put two in the front, four on the side and two in the rear

 It's only when I hooked them up to decent amp, and hung them against drywall, not on the floor as stand-alones, that I got the full bass. In my bedroom, a 12'x 18' space, and ONLY TWO of these connected to a LePai 2020TI and hung on the wall next to the TV, ..

 For about 15 bucks apiece, they are a fantastic bargain. I plan on buying 10 maybe 20 more, and seeing if they can be used as in-wall speakers. How about building your own set of Bose 901's with these ? Very cool decent speakers.  At $15 bucks, how can you not like these ?  I first bought a pair, thinking at $12

 If you're thinking of starting a new, upgradable audio desktop kit for your room or dorm then this is it. Heck, if you need to use this is a large space such as a living room then go ahead these are plenty loud. If you need more sound then go ahead and buy a couple of sets. At $40 this really is a no-brainer

 Apparently Dayton changed their manufacturer or something mid-2013. My set received was pretty darn good, give for a treble which at times come across as being too harsh. Bass extension could be better, but is definitely strong and accurate in the non sub-bass frequencies.  Really accurate sound reproduction overall and very pleasant listening experience

 While these are my first pair of bookshelf speakers and I cant compare these to any other, I can say for sure that they exceed my expectations.  Design: Pretty simple, black cabinets. Goes well with all sorts of furniture really.  Sound Quality: Ok so here's where I think I can give some sort of constructive advice, being an owner of IEMs such as the Westone 3 and UE Triplefis - I think I know roughly what sounds good - but then again that's just my opinion

Dislikes: Upon opening the box these have a really strong glue/plastic smell to them but that went away after a few days.  Conclusions: Absolutely no competition at this price point ($40)

A winner when paired with the Lepai LP-2020A+

  If size is of your concern, it might be worth looking into the Micca MB42, or soon to be released MB42X (with a proper crossover), for small desks and office uses. Otherwise these will do nicely on a bigger desk, or even nicely for a home theater set-up.  All-in-all I'm greatly satisfied with the speakers. If there was only one major complaint, it would be that they are kinda big, but that's a tradeoff of having good sounding speakers

 Bass is very present, although not very thumping (a subwoofer is probably needed to reach anything well below the 60hz range) Great for classical or even electronic music, just lacks a bit for bass in dubstep. Overall for the price these in my opinion blow any sort of out-of-the-box computer 5.1 setup you might have (*cough* Logitech), considering that's where I've come from.  There are slight quality control issues like the manufacturing quality of the speaker covers, on the back have exposed glue, and there is also hot glue stringing out of the woofer mounting zone

I never used them due to this, and just hooked them up for the first time in months as a stereo in the bedroom and immediately took them down and put some of the 5.5" Sonys in there place and the difference is night and day, and they are only $20 more

 This pair sounds 100x better than the last one. They don't sound quite as good as the Sonys that I was using in their place, but its close. I am updating my score to a 4-Star, assuming that the speakers amazon is shipping now are the new manufacturing, not the bad batch.

 #6 - The R1850DB pair are pretty good as TV speakers to our Sony Bravia. Better than the cheap soundbar we bought 5 years ago and rarely use. But worth $199? I don't think so. Maybe it's my age

 I suppose okay for gamers. But not for stereo sound especially in large room with high ceilings. They sound better the closer you stand to them. Stinks

The best powered speakers under $200 are the Neumi BS5P. (They are better than the R1700BT someone else mentioned.)

If you need a subwoofer output for the option of adding a sub later, then look at the Edifier R1850DB.

I finally got an air conditioner installed, but its noise drowns out both sets of my computer speakers (which were fairly quiet to begin with). Would anyone have any suggestions for speakers for under $200 that would be up to par and loud enough that I could hear over a roaring AC unit lol? I haven't went speaker shopping in years so I have no idea what to look for or brands or anything.
