 I picked it up in 2002 right when they came out. It was cheap, which was good for me because it was 2002 and I didn't have a lot of money. It's light, it's got a short scale neck so it plays really fast, and it sounds really good for as cheap as it is and as light as it is, it has a really nice tone, it's got nice reverberation, I really like how it plays. I think I got it for $200, maybe $250

 They're great because they've got, like I said, a short scale neck and it's a triple octave neck so you can get down there and play that 24th fret that you can't get to play on most basses. It's a big cutaway just like a Les Paul, so you've got plenty of room to maneuver down there. I'm upgrading actually this weekend, I'm going to pick up one of the Lakeland Daryl Jones models which are made in Chicago and I just was tooling around with over at Sam Ash in Buffalo Grove last week and they just sound amazing. The neck's really fast, it's kind of like a jazz bass where the neck gets really small by the nut, so it's a nice transition from the short scale Dan O bass because it's still fast, it's still a little narrower than a P bass and it just sounds amazing

I highly recommend the Danelectro basses. I have the 59dc which is a long scale bass but to my ears it has a lot of similar tonal character to a Rickenbacker (having owned both). If you’re looking for a short scale option the Danelectro Longhorn bass could be a great option, but I have never personally played one. They’re affordable and vintage-voiced, and while it’s true nothing sounds like a Rick except a Rick, to my ears these things are the best and closest option under $1000

I have a PJ Bass which does the stringy rocky sound with which I'm really happy BUT I'm looking to get a shortscale with flatwounds for a more soulfull sound within the price range of 100/160euros (I know it's a bit cheap but that's all I can afford with our daughter on the way).
I'm currently eyeing the Ibanez TMB-30 because of it's diverse pickup setup.
I've played one and it gets nice and subby + it can also do some nice mid rangey stuff...
BUT it doesn't have a lot of character. It doesn't get into that colourful territory.
I was wondering if at some point down the line I could get closer to that sound by getting vintage/Rickenbacker voiced pickups?
I'm worried that they might not fit in the body when I get to that point :S

I also have the option to buy a Hofner Galaxie shortscale bass but I don't have the option to test it since it's across the border...

Not sure if this is possible at all but hey, won't get anywhere at all without askin.

If there's any other shortscale options out there I'd love to hear it!

Love the thumpy/quacky Rickenbacker sound 🤩 How can I make a shortscale sound that way?

 The action was really high. I lowered the action. I did it by just adjusting the bridge and then, of course, making sure that this was set to the proper angle. You can see mine's pretty angled to get the intonation

 And I'm going to show you how I use this bass and why I think a short scale bass is a better instrument for a lot of guitar players, even bass beginners. You know, I mean, there's some concerns that if you start on a short scale, would it be harder to go to the to the full scale? Well, it depends. It depends on what the long term goal is. I like these instruments for a lot of reasons

 The bridge is a one piece with a piece of wood right there. And so if you're asking about intonation, you kind of just move it and adjust it until it's in the right intonation. This is an older instrument. And let's be honest, we're not going to be playing some crazy technical stuff on this

Danelectro '58 Longhorn Short Scale Bass

 Today, we're going to be talking about short scale bases.

 The short scale base just means exactly what it sounds like.

 This space is a shorter scale than a normal 34 inch scale base.

 And of course, this space is really different,

 especially because it has some really crazy features that we'll get into.

 The first being, of course, is that it's made of like particle board.

 Like if you have a workshop, it looks like your pegboard.

 And then they put some blocks and it's semi hollow.

 So there's not all empty in there, but it is mostly empty in there.

 And then there's a vinyl piece of looks like like a faux leather

 wrapped around the entire base of the instrument.

 One of the weird features of this is that the neck is wider than the

 So it looks like it was made by mistake.

 This is an interesting thing because this is made in Korea.

 But what's really interesting about it is if you've played some of the older

 main career models, the tuning keys were really not very good.

 But they are guitar tuning keys, something really strange.
