Brooks is most known in the trail running world for their Cascadia (below), a beloved shoe among both runners and thru-hikers that is now in its 16th generation. But the modern Catamount here offers a whole different take on a trail runner, with a nimble design built to take on moderate distances at speed. Imported from Brooks’ Hyperion Tempo road shoe, the DNA Flash midsole is lightweight and responsive, offering a snappy underfoot feel ideal for pushing the pace and precision on tricky sections of trail. You’ll notice the extra kick on fast ground like gravel roads and easy hardpack, but the Catamount is also prepared for battle on technical terrain, with trail-specific features like a rock plate, gaiter adapters, and a TrailTack rubber outsole.

At $160, the Catamount is no small investment, so it’s important to understand its strengths and weaknesses. Despite the fact that it was “designed and built for 100 miles of run happy” (as it states on the tongue), most runners will want a softer and plusher shoe for ultra-distance efforts. Further, the upper doesn’t stretch as much as a shoe like the Speedgoat above—worth considering if you deal with swollen feet—and like most of Brooks’ offerings it lacks a truly locked-down fit. But there’s no denying that the Catamount is lightweight and fast, and despite its high price tag, it is still a noticeable $40 less than the similarly high-end TNF VECTIV Flight.  A couple of stains are starting to develop here, but even though I've really put the shoe through its paces, it's holding up really well. So those are my thoughts: on the Brooks Catamount after 100 miles. 5 ounces from a men's U.s size 9.. So what has it been like to run on the Brooks Catamount for the last hundred miles? The main feature for me is the ample amount of Dna Flash midsole foam

 A very minimal amount of padding in the tongue and the heel collar, but this shoe still manages to be a very comfortable shoe without having puffiness. This is the exact kind of thing that I'm talking about when I see a really puffy shoe and I keep thinking it doesn't have to be so puffy, it doesn't have to have so much weight to be comfortable. This is an example of a shoe that's very comfortable without having a lot of extra puffiness weight. I think they've done a fantastic job with that to protect you from some of the elements

I’m using trail running mostly for, walking, running on dirt road or light hiking in wet condition. Bot going to use in pouring rain so I’ll avoid the waterproof or no waterproof debate. 

What’s your experience with Nike Pegasus Gore-Tex or Hoka11?

Trail running shoes for wide feet

I bought a pair of recently released Brooks Catamount shoes. It has been a long time since I ran in Brooks, but I must say I am quite impressed. The fit is excellent with the shoes being snug in heel and midfoot, and fairly spacious in forefoot. The ride is quite springy for a trail shoe, and they seem comfortable enough on payment

In 2022, mountain athletes don’t think twice about taking on big, technical challenges with nothing more than a pair of running shoes and a day’s worth of supplies. Among the growing assortment of fast-and-light footwear options, many of our go-to shoes come from climbing-specialist La Sportiva. Their versatile Bushido II is a perennial favorite and excels on all manner of terrain, from soggy trails and snow to fifth-class rock and loose talus. Grippy FriXion rubber (a compound used on some of Sportiva’s climbing shoes) gives you solid traction while scrambling, and the burly tread grips remarkably well on soft terrain without being too overbuilt for firm ground.  It has a velcro gusseted tongue. It has an ortholite ergonomic insert. The weight of the shoe is 10.5 ounces or 298 grams

 I do think these Bushidos are very durable shoe. I mean just looking at it I can tell how it's made and how the protection is on the shoe. It's make it a very durable shoe. I just use this shoe in very aggressive terrain which eats up the shoes like in no time so it still looks good

 Actually the mod doesn't stick to it as to other ones with a deeper log so that's one advantage. The traction performs pretty good in loose gravel situation and we have couple of trails here with all these little loose gravel small pebbles you can just slip down. But actually I felt really good and stable and comfortable in this terrain too. so I didn't have any problem with the traction yet

 So if you look at this last Portivas you look at the shoe which looks like bomb proof and actually it's kind of bomb proof. So the protection is really really good on this shoe. So starting with this Tpu front area, this protects you from rocks from sticks the same Tpu material. They have it aligned on the side which one can help you when you go between maybe drier bushes, the sticks hitting you from the side so that's gonna protect you against that

La Sportiva Bushido II is amazing. Insanely grippy, I keep good traction on rocks and roots even in wet weather. Can’t recommend them enough.

I have Inov-8 Mudclaws for mud, Ultra G 300 Max for trails but I have ran a few mountains recently that suit neither shoe. I need something with less flex and cushioning than the Ultra G, but less extreme than the Mudclaws. It also needs to have quite a stiff sole (perhaps a rock plate) so that when I run a cross boulder fields the sole doesn't bend round the rock.
Any suggestions?

Advice on trail running trainers for very rocky terrain.

 I've always been using boots before, and each individual boot weighed 1 lb 7.2 oz. Switching to the trail runners, with a 10.5 oz individual weight, was immediately noticeable, especially on the inclines

r/Ultralight - "The Weekly" - Week of September 27, 2021

 I tried Lowa this round. So I will see how many years they last. The Swiss swear by La Sportiva for its resoling.

Discovered that I had $240 in REI dividends today, so my Salomon 4D 3 GTX and Darn Tough merino wool socks came out to just $9!!! Happy deal hunting everyone!

Also, La Sportiva Bushidos II. Fit my feet like a glove, but with enough give for long hikes. Amazing for alpine

I have finally worn completely through my Altra superior 4.5's, and was looking for new shoe advice. I really liked the low (but not non-existent) amount of cushioning. Does anybody have a recommendation for a shoe with a similar amount of cushioning, possibly with a slightly narrower toe box and more grip? 

Most trail shoes I see online are either full cushion or totally minimal. I apologize if this is a repost, but I couldn't find any recent posts with Reddit's booty search feature.

I run 80/20 trails/streets, in a hilly coastal area with a mild climate.

Looking for shoe advice

I already own the Bushido II which hugs my narrow foot perfectly, but just falls short on cushioning on long days and I end up with hot spots and blisters on the balls of my feet. I'm looking for another shoe with a similar low-volume fit and more underfoot protection. I'm not looking for spongy/cloud-like cushioning, or a bulky shoe that would be cumbersome on technical terrain - just overall comfort from sharp rocks and steep downhills that beat up your feet.
