Brooks is most known in the trail running world for their Cascadia (below), a beloved shoe among both runners and thru-hikers that is now in its 16th generation. But the modern Catamount here offers a whole different take on a trail runner, with a nimble design built to take on moderate distances at speed. Imported from Brooks’ Hyperion Tempo road shoe, the DNA Flash midsole is lightweight and responsive, offering a snappy underfoot feel ideal for pushing the pace and precision on tricky sections of trail. You’ll notice the extra kick on fast ground like gravel roads and easy hardpack, but the Catamount is also prepared for battle on technical terrain, with trail-specific features like a rock plate, gaiter adapters, and a TrailTack rubber outsole.

At $160, the Catamount is no small investment, so it’s important to understand its strengths and weaknesses. Despite the fact that it was “designed and built for 100 miles of run happy” (as it states on the tongue), most runners will want a softer and plusher shoe for ultra-distance efforts. Further, the upper doesn’t stretch as much as a shoe like the Speedgoat above—worth considering if you deal with swollen feet—and like most of Brooks’ offerings it lacks a truly locked-down fit. But there’s no denying that the Catamount is lightweight and fast, and despite its high price tag, it is still a noticeable $40 less than the similarly high-end TNF VECTIV Flight.  A couple of stains are starting to develop here, but even though I've really put the shoe through its paces, it's holding up really well. So those are my thoughts: on the Brooks Catamount after 100 miles. 5 ounces from a men's U.s size 9.. So what has it been like to run on the Brooks Catamount for the last hundred miles? The main feature for me is the ample amount of Dna Flash midsole foam

 A very minimal amount of padding in the tongue and the heel collar, but this shoe still manages to be a very comfortable shoe without having puffiness. This is the exact kind of thing that I'm talking about when I see a really puffy shoe and I keep thinking it doesn't have to be so puffy, it doesn't have to have so much weight to be comfortable. This is an example of a shoe that's very comfortable without having a lot of extra puffiness weight. I think they've done a fantastic job with that to protect you from some of the elements

Trail running shoes for wide feet

I bought a pair of recently released Brooks Catamount shoes. It has been a long time since I ran in Brooks, but I must say I am quite impressed. The fit is excellent with the shoes being snug in heel and midfoot, and fairly spacious in forefoot. The ride is quite springy for a trail shoe, and they seem comfortable enough on payment

 Some Tpu overlay to help keep the mud and uh and water out if you're crossing streams. But one nice point that they may they emphasized here is making sure that the shoe can still drain water. so there on the side, right above the midsole, there's some little slits in this overlay to help water drain out just in case you are doing some creek crossings uh, in your training and or racing. I want a shoe that has the cushion and drop of my Hoka Speedgoat with the toebox of my Altra Olympus 4.0.

Beware they do run very narrow at the toe and are not for everyone. If you needed the extra toe room you could look to the Hoka EVO Speedgoat,. EVO Mafate 2 or the Mafate Speed 3, all of which are high cushioned but have a stretchy bit of fabric over the toe, which can make the fit more accommodating.

I currently run in Nike Pegasus Trail Gore Tex. they are ok. But not great. 

Recently switched my road shoes to Hoka Rincon 2 for slower, longer runs and Saucony Endorphin Pro for speed runs.  I quite like the cushioning on the Rincons and am now looking for a trail shoe. 

I am nervous as the Speedgoat 4 were originally released January 2020 and the speedgoat 3 the January before that. So a little concerned that a Speedgoat 5 comes out soon.

Shoes for long days of running &amp; hiking

I’ve done a couple ultras in loose snow, which felt a lot like running in sand to me. I’ve used both the SpeedCross and Hoka SpeedGoat. The ‘goats might have had the advantage due to the much wider sole helping with flotation, but I felt they got a lot heavier when wet. In all instances I studded the soles with about 8 sheet metal screws at the end of some select lugs, which I felt helped with a little extra grip even when ice wasn’t an issue

Wondering if anyone had any advice about shoes that may be better suited for sandy environments. I’m used to running in rocky, rooty, muddy Vermont environments and want to be better prepared for a trail that is relatively flat but very sandy. I currently sport the Salomon speed cross 5s and have used them in sand before but really don’t feel like the larger lugs give any advantage

Recommendations for trail shoes for sand

For years I wore boots (really heavy), then shoes (heavy) and now trail runners (not so heavy). I prefer the Hoka One Speedgoat trail runners. They are good for dry conditions, have great grip and stability (for me). I have never had ankle stability issues, so it works great

, (4) have great cushioning for all-day wear on sharp surfaces, and (5) are not so heavy that I feel like I'm fighting the shoe when picking up the pace. I've run in Altra Timps and Lone Peaks, Brooks Caldera 4, La Sportiva Jackal, Salomon Sense Ride 3, and Topo MTN Racer 1s and none of these had all-day underfoot cushioning and protection against sharps like the Speedgoats. The durability of my Speedgoats have been good.

New trail running shoes

I run in the Speedgoat 3s and the Speedgoat 4 is a step back for me with regards to weight since it got heavier. The Speedgoat Evo on the other hand, is a huge improvement and superior to the Speedgoat 3 and 4.

For 3 season hiking I chose Hoka speedgoat 3, followed very closely by the brooks cascadia. They're both VERY comfortable shoes that are light and breath + dry very well. Lightness + Breathability + Drying quickly > a heavy gnarly boot that tries to keep you clean and dry but inevitably will get water logged from sweat anyway or the elements, just might take longer vs a trail runner. Also 1 pound on your foot is 5 pounds on your back

I'm  new to hiking but my girlfriend finally convinced me to go to a hiking  trip with her, somewhere around Schönau am Königssee and on the mountain area around it (nothing extreme tho). I've been looking for some proper shoes cause I'm  pretty sure I would regret it if I go with my ultra boost, and I've  found a few alternative:

1. Salomon  Quest Prime GTX: The only boots. Is it okay or overkill? I think it's  the most robust of them all and I can wear it when hiking during winter  or ski vacation. (114 euro)
2. Salomon  XA Pro 3D V8: trail runners, seems really comfy. However, no  waterproofness (can't use it in winter). I don't know if it offers  enough protection and grip? (96 euro)
3. Salomon  Trailster 2 GTX: quite similer to the XA, with GTX waterproofness.  However I've heard some controversy regarding GTX on trail runners (too  warm, sweaty feet). (72 euro)
4. Last  but not least: Merell Moab 2 (vents or GTX). Mother of all boots.  Almost bought the vents one immediately but read that it's really,  really prone to getting wet (even with just some wet grass). Not sure if  it's true and if I should just get the GTX version. Both around 80-90  euro.

What do you guys  think? Sadly I can't go to Globetrotter cause of the 'rona. I appreciate  any answer or if you have other suggestions, I would be very thankful!  Thanks and sorry for the long post. :)

I think salomon would be more versatile and less of an overkill but let&#39;s see. Kinda tempted of the idea of having  &quot;real&quot; boots in addition to my Timbs for winter :)</p>
