 Similarly, I think stomach sleepers are going to need a firmer Mattress to prevent a bend in their spine which will lead to back pain over time. I don't think mattresses are really BIFL.  Getting 10 years out of one is great.

For me, I recently upgraded 2 mattresses and simply went with reasonably quality "roll a bed" mattresses that are all pretty similar.  I enjoy "firm" memory foam mattresses, so it worked out well for me to simply narrow it down to a few brands and find the best deal - currently on a Bear Pro I got for iirc $700 shipped w/ pillows and a mattress protector.  I like it, but I already can tell I will be replacing in in 3-5 years which is fine.  More DIY friends made fun of me because you can basically build the same thing for probably $200 or less in materials if you buy them and put the layers together yourself.

The other route is you can go for Latex if you like the memory foam style - e.g. Tempurpedic.  These will last quite some time and get good reviews, but make sure you enjoy the style first.  They'll be in the $2-4k range iirc.

Beyond that is a level I didn't really consider that some others have posted here - the truly "luxury" mattress brands.   I could never really decipher the bullshit from the real so I kinda gave up and went with a cheap foam.

Previously when younger I had hookups that worked at the W and was able to simple get one of their mattresses at the employee pricing which I recall being not cheap, but not ripoff - probably around a grand for a queen.  That's probably one of the better routes to go if you have the industry connections.  That mattress was great - but was getting pretty worn out after 8 or so years of use, sagging a lot. 

Everyone loves the saying "don't cheap out on a mattress, you spend a third of your life on it!" and I agree with the theory.  The problem is finding any sort of quality:value metric that makes sense.  The Bear Pro's I got recent for my new place seem pretty much identical to the extremely overpriced ($2200k iirc) Sealy I got made of similar if not identical materials from my old spot.

If you could convince me you legitimately have a mattress that helps me sleep 20% better or is 20% more comfortable than what I have now and would last forever I'd spend 5 figures in a second.  I just don't think any such thing exists.

Since doing my research on it I simply decided mattresses are not BIFL - treat them as you would any other disposable wear item.  Get a decent value and don't be super picky.   Much like non-stick pans - no such thing as BIFL, just wait for a decent deal on a midtier mass market brand and don't worry about abusing it.  Not worth spending 3-4x as much to get maybe 2x the life out of.

Brand recommendations for mattress?

 I think it's one of the best ones you can find online, especially if you're looking for a generally comfortable hybrid bed. I think anyone with a budget of around a thousand bucks should look at this mattress very closely. I think a lot of people are gonna like it, but let us know what you think. Write us down below in the comment section

 Now, this isn't a hard and fast rule, but in general if you're a side sleeper, there's a good chance you're gonna want a soft mattress like the soft model of this bed because you can wind up developing hip and shoulder pain over time if you sleep mostly on your side and you're sleeping on something too firm for you back and some extremes on the other hand, are generally looking for something firmer because if you're sleeping on your back and you're sleeping on something that's too soft, your midsection can kind of dip below the rest of your spine and cause back pain over time. The medium firmness generally works for everybody, although it might not be exactly what you're looking for. so if maybe you're not sure what you want, your next mattress or you know you're a combination sleeper, go with the medium. If you're a side sleeper, maybe try the soft, and if you're back your summer sleeper, maybe try out the Fern

I've lurked this sub and MU during my quest for a new mattress so I just wanted to share my experience with the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid in medium. **Background:** I'm 5'4", 120 lbs, combination sleeper. I stressed over what firmness level to get and ended up choosing medium because it was recommended for combination sleepers, plus I'd slept on other people's firm foam/hybrid mattresses from other brands and they were way too hard for me so I thought medium was my best bet.

 Something that would not break the bank. Something that would last longer than a year.  So the Verdict: This mattress is firm in the sense that it is memory foam. If you are going from a spring mattress to this it will feel so firm at first

I visited IKEA today and found the $500 Heston mattress (queen size). Curious if anyone has any experience with it, how it holds up, or any advice whatsoever. Thanks in advance!

my mother has severe spinal stenosis (several discs have broken down, she's had rods and screws installed with little benefit, as well as a torn glute repair. take care of your spines, kids.) she's 56, ~155, and sleeps on her back, prefers med-firm or firm. her gentleman companion says he's comfortable on whatever. while they were moving in together I bought them a zinus, warning them that it would break down fairly quickly and need to be replaced, and that it would be a pain when it did. the time has come.

she's up every night in serious pain, and sometimes doesn't bother trying to sleep at all. her job is very difficult and both emotionally and physically demanding, especially during covid. I don't feel like I can waste her time with a bunch of returns or DIYing something, though the zippered mattresses with layers seem doable.

she's willing to spend up to $3500 and is interested in latex or a latex hybrid for its lifespan. I'd like to avoid memory foam and memory foam hybrids because if the next mattress sags within five years I'm going to turn into the Joker.

currently looking at the Alexander nest hybrid or an Ikea hesstun mattress+good latex topper, since we live fairly close to an Ikea and a return would plausibly be easier than dealing with a mattress company.
can anyone point me in the right direction, or confirm my instincts?
