Secondly -- the Hesstun in general is a decent quality low budget bed. It's a coil on coil bed -- meaning it has a layer of pocket coils as the support layer and also a layer of microcoils in the comfort layer. The comfort layer also uses a bit polyurethane foam on top.

The HESSTUN is a more complete mattress on it's own than some of the other offerings. I think the mattress + topper strategy is better suited for mattresses that don't already have thick comfort layers. From IKEA I think the best one for this is HAUGESUND -- which could allow you do to do like a 2" latex and 2" memory foam topper if you wanted. Or just 3" latex.

IKEA mattresses aren't bad quality. They also post all the specs and foam densities they use -- which is more than Beautyrest can say. The Hesstun isn't a super high quality mattress -- but it's not a bad mattress either.
