It's hard to do much better than the BenQ HT2150ST when you're looking for a high-quality home theater centerpiece that stays out of quadruple-digit price tag territory. In our testing, it treated us to impeccable clarity and consistently vibrant colors, whether watching fast-paced action scenes or tranquil panoramic shots. Its fan is one of the quietest we've ever encountered, remaining barely noticeable even when the sound effects faded away and yielded to muted scenes of dialogue.   Built-in sound is fine, recommend using an HDMI switcher with optical out to connect real speakers and to connect more than 2 input things.  Edit: Updating this after thinking more about it/using my LS300 to a 3-stars (considering the price) - even with the focus adjustment I could never get this to focus the entire view at once, the upper 1/3 was always blurry, & the image quality (not the projection quality but the colors and contrast) is really bad, impossible to adjust to look good

VAVA (UST) - Normally, the VAVA goes for around $2.8K but it does go on sale regularly. It's great for the price, features solid speakers, and excellent image quality. Set up is simple and it's super bright

I have a 13x21 foot room (although because of a HVAC bump out it’s more like 10x21. )
The screen, which I’m leaning towards a grey 110” or 115”, will be on the short wall. The front of the first seating row will be about 8-9ft back so there’s room for a table projector at least. 

My question is whether to aim for a decent short throw or ultra short at this price. I saw the Vava was on sale a few months ago for 2k so it feels rough to spend 2.8 but I’d rather not wait until next oct/nov for one. 

Further more, the Vava and the similar Chinese ones have built in sound bars which is appealing for the ease of setup. However they’re also only upscaled 4k.

Is there a plain short throw with true 4k at this price worth getting? Or even so, Is laser worth more to get than true 4k? 

Thanks in advance! I’m curious how you all prioritize those last couple attributes.

Short throw recommendations under $2.5k

 I am highly critical of anything I purchase with my evaluation of electronics being especially stringent. Compared to the Optoma GT1080, the BenQ has better colors; equal or better black levels; less rainbow effect (abbreviated RBE); and better focus uniformity (perfect). Many people are concerned about the rainbow effect, so I am here to say that it is all but non-existent on the BenQ. The Optoma had some rainbowing that wasn't bad by any means, but it did show up without even purposefully looking for it

Completely satisfied and even a fair-bit impressed

 Whether that's a nice white wall or a projection screen. those are your gonna give you the best results when you're using your projector. Now this projector is called a gaming projector for good reason. I Love how bright it is I love the quality of the image that I'm seeing being projected I love all the menu features and all the features that it comes with in terms of functionality

 when I'm you setting it up like this, all I have to do is run a power cable to it and use this device I don't have to run a whole bunch of the cables or set up my laptop close to my projector I can set it up wherever I want it to be in my house as long as it's within about a hundred foot range and that's also depending on is it going between walls or concrete and those type of things. so it's approximately a hundred feet line-of-sight now. I've tested the wireless FHD kit at varying distances with different devices and it's worked pretty well. It was super easy to connect literally plug and go and I didn't notice any latency I didn't notice any distortion or interference

 All you do is you use the remote that comes with the unit to be able to switch between the four different inputs and that will automatically stream it to this receiver. Now in the projector side. All you do is you connect up the short HDMI cable from the unit to the projector and use the USB power cable plug into the unit and that's what actually powers the unit. Now if you're mounting the projector up on the ceiling, this is a real bonus because all you need to do is run power to the ceiling and then you can use this device

 the front foot that allows you to raise the projector up a little bit and two little feet on the back that allow you to adjust the balance from left to right. Now on the back of the unit, there are a bunch of different inputs. It has two HDMI inputs and input for your PC using a VGA connection, an audio input for when you're running it with your PC and also an audio output. So if you want to attach external speakers or attach it to your sound system, you're able to do that

 It does have some weight to it. You have a hidden compartment right here where you have your focus ring and you also have a little knob right here for your zoom in and out. Now over here on the back side you have a power button, You have a temperature light, a lamp light. you have up-down left-right navigation buttons okay, your back menu source and then on the backside of this projector you've got your HDMI one HDMI to input

 Now you could actually see what it looks like when I cut these lights out and this is what you get when you're in a dark room and you don't want to turn the lights on, you don't need to. you could just go ahead and light the remote up like that and everything is pretty visible. And here you have a little carry strap also so you can connect this to the sides of the bag, throw it over your shoulder. They know that you want to take this on the go with you and basically you're gonna be bringing this to your friends, play some games

 This is basically a gaming projector. The fact that they give you a carry case with this all the cables that you need to bring it on the go. They know that because this thing is a short throw projector, you're gonna want to bring it to your friend's house. You're gonna want to put it up on somebody's living room wall and plug in a Ps4

 It was hard to adjust the image so that it was straight. There is no Bluetooth capability but I see that in this price range a short throw projector won’t have Bluetooth. We got a Bluetooth adaptor to plug into the projector to use our outdoor speakers, but it wouldn’t work with the projector. The last straw was when we tried movie night again, using the same Fire Stick we used the 1st time, and the projector just kept saying there was no signal, using either HDMI port

Great picture quality, but stopped working

The ONLY REASON I didn’t give this 5 stars is because the remote is sorta cheaply made because when I press on a button it feels as if it’s going to break apart and then reason why I’m pressing firmly is because the “ok” button doesn’t work and have to hit it 8 times or most of the time I have to get up and manually hit the ok button on the projector itself VERY ANNOYING.. that being said this is by the the best projector for gaming I’ve ever seen and if I return it’s only because I want to upgrade to the BenQ 4K and the fact the remote doesn’t work but I’m sure if I was keeping it I could get a replacement of remote.

 Those are the things that I have and then once you go back on the display you should be able to see 720, 1080p, and of course your 4k UHD as your display. Another thing that's gonna help you in this, while you're in the settings, is if you go to setup and you see the 4k TV details, once you set up with the other settings, you actually go on there, it's gonna let you know that you've already activated everything they could and now that your projector can actually display the 4k UHD in 60 Hertz. So this is basically what it's letting you know. The TV resolution can go up that high

Optoma HD28HDR Review

Husband and I bought this to replace a similar Optoma DLP projector that we had for ~6 years. For the same price point now, this one is way brighter. We used to have to wait until dark to see anything properly on a projector, but this one is still super clear in the middle of the day (barring direct sunlight of course). That aspect alone is worth the upgrade for us, because we can get way more use out of it

Easily works in daylight!

 On the back of the machine there are two "legs" but only one of them is adjustable, the other is fixed. So if you want to adjust the angle of the image to your wall, good luck, your only option is a lopsided picture because only one leg's height can be adjusted. The other leg is fixed, you can't screw it in or out to adjust height.  If someone can explain to me how this is sensible design, I'd love to know
