The model I've been looking at closest is the BenQ HT2050a (known as the W1110 in the EU) as it seems to offer the best solution to my somewhat scattered needs.

 On the fan noise I expected better but once I get home I’ll test it in real life case and see how it works. The speaker I will report back on to see if it improves with time.

Great picture even in brightly lit room, great sound.

  I see BenQ has a HT2550  refurb for $700.  The closest new one they have is the HT3550 for $1400.

I am currently using a cheap 1080p vankyo projector, it has a good screen size at a short distance and picture quality is decent for the price I payed, I was looking to upgrade to a higher quality 1080p projector such as the benQ th585. I would like something brighter and clearer, I was wondering if it would be a better investment to get a lower end 4K projector and which one would be recommended for 120 inch projection at roughly 3.5m. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Best budget 4K projector

 Audio output is a single headphone jack so you'll need to get your surround sound a different way. Lastly it has one USB port but this is intended as a power output to power a dongle (Firestick, Chromecast etc) and as such will not connect your phone or other device to the projector input image. I am using a Chromecast 4th gen as my main content caster and from what I have read this USB output will not sufficiently power the device so have had to plug into the wall leaving the USB power source totally redundant. We only need HDMI so I don't really mind but for the sake of others reflect on what i/o connectors you need before buying

There is an old school VGA PC input, and an ancient history RS-232 which I doubt anyone will ever use. Fantastic picture even with ambient light - I do have a few considerations to share...

  I really love watching things with this projector, but I don't necessarily love the projector due to these various issues. BenQ can do better, and while they should be proud of the hardware design for the most part, they should really have spent a bit more time on the fans and thinking through the lens shift, and the software/firmware team should just be fired (I know, that sounds harsh, but seriously, no sleep function!?!?..

 It should be able to just power right back on at any point in the shutdown process.  Many of the cons are nitpicks, but they're really quite ridiculous things that I just can't fathom why they are the way they are, and they could probably be fixed through an update. If not for these stupid design decisions and the lens shift limitation, this would easily be a 4-star projector. With those improvements and a reduction in noise of 2-3dB, it would be 5-stars

Great picture and brightness, lens shift and software could use improvement

 HDMI cable. I had no trouble with the cable coming from my cable box. I hooked up my device with a shorter cable and I had no issues. I ordered an HDMI signal booster and hopefully that will fix the issue

  Update: I bought the booster and that seemed to fix my "Out of Range" and "Searching for Signal" issue. I've included a product link as well. For the power source, I did what another user suggested. I used an Apple iPhone charger block

 If you don’t have an audio system to connect and rely on the projector then benq has better sound quality compared to Epson. I got the 2250 at a great price during a sale so maybe comparing it to th685 isn’t fair but I think feature wise Epson is better overall.

 NO horizontal lens shift is a pain and makes it extremely difficult to setup if you’re not positioning the device in the center and at a certain height. Epson is much easier to setup and is flexible at projecting from different angles. If you don’t have an audio system to connect and rely on the projector then benq has better sound quality compared to Epson. I got the 2250 at a great price during a sale so maybe comparing it to th685 isn’t fair but I think feature wise Epson is better overall

 Those are the things that I have and then once you go back on the display you should be able to see 720, 1080p, and of course your 4k UHD as your display. Another thing that's gonna help you in this, while you're in the settings, is if you go to setup and you see the 4k TV details, once you set up with the other settings, you actually go on there, it's gonna let you know that you've already activated everything they could and now that your projector can actually display the 4k UHD in 60 Hertz. So this is basically what it's letting you know. The TV resolution can go up that high

Optoma HD28HDR Review

Husband and I bought this to replace a similar Optoma DLP projector that we had for ~6 years. For the same price point now, this one is way brighter. We used to have to wait until dark to see anything properly on a projector, but this one is still super clear in the middle of the day (barring direct sunlight of course). That aspect alone is worth the upgrade for us, because we can get way more use out of it

Easily works in daylight!

 On the back of the machine there are two "legs" but only one of them is adjustable, the other is fixed. So if you want to adjust the angle of the image to your wall, good luck, your only option is a lopsided picture because only one leg's height can be adjusted. The other leg is fixed, you can't screw it in or out to adjust height.  If someone can explain to me how this is sensible design, I'd love to know
