I think my Nook Simple Touch is finally giving up the ghost... it's started to not respond to touch for certain menus, won't let me define words and access the device menu options, things like that. (Not like dead pixel areas, just like the menu function for certain things got disconnected somehow.)

I have nerve damage to my wrists and chronic daily migraines that are made worse by cellphone type screens so I'm looking for a lightweight replacement that retains the dull paper looking screen that this one has. I'd also love it to have a microsd card slot for expanded memory.

Replacing Nook Simple Touch

 Both are the same size (they use the same body), but the screen resolutions are different. The 4 has a 300ppi screen, the 4e has 212ppi.

Looking at getting my first Nook. I generally read paper books, but have had a kindle paperwhite 2nd gen for a bit. 

I don't really have many books on there, and am looking at making the switch for various reasons (Preferring B&amp;N over Amazon, liking the overall look of nooks better,etc). 

Anywho. Should I go with one of the new ones (Glowlight 4 or 4e?) or look at an older used Glowlight 3?

I don't particularly care about things like warm light or anything of that sort. I really just care if it works good enough to read a book, and has a light. I just want something that I can read books in bed when my physical books are too difficult to read in those situations.

What Nook should I go with?

 Now, Amazon's and Kobo's latest midrange ebook readers use new 7-inch E Ink Carta 1200 panels. Those screens show more text per page and enable faster page turns than previous models. 

Barnes & Noble says the 1,400mAh battery should allow the Nook to last a long while without a recharge, but I don't think that's accurate based on my week's worth of anecdotal testing. The ebook reader handled about one long book before requiring a recharge, although, to be fair, I didn't need to recharge it mid-book.

 I don’t know exactly how long it took as I wasn’t checking on it but it was fully charged within a couple of hours when I came to check on it. I saw one review saying it took 8 hours to charge and I would say that is a defective device as I did not have any issues. Not sure how long the battery charge will last but having came home from work just now after setting it on my nightstand last night, it is at 94% so I’m confident it’ll have a good battery life for my needs. I’ve never owned an e-ink device before but I was able to use them in school and this is similar I think (that was a nook simple touch forever ago) and I’m happy for that

Works great, no issues

 The B&N website picture of the GL 4 on it’s home page makes the book covers look very crisp with strong contrast, but the screen is actually just like my GL 3’s screen and has no where near the contrast that it appears to have in the picture. For most readers this won’t be a problem, but allowing bolder fonts (bolder than the current “thick” adjustment) and providing better screen contrast would help a lot of people with vision problems.

My only disappointment is the screen. I have some vision loss and to read comfortably I need large bold fonts and very strong contrast. Big Improvement from the Glowlight 3

Then I learnt about this new, updated Nook and decided to try it out. It's slim but slightly longer than I expected if you hold it vertically, but it certainly isn't unwieldly, and its screen is great. Reading Nook books on here is a pleasant experience, with a nice page-turning effect, background options, and all the simple tools I want in an e-reader. The screen feels just bright enough, and you can adjust it easily enough

Of course, this is also meant to be a broader-purpose tablet, and it certainly can be used as one; its screen size is no doubt meant to work with streaming videos or scrolling through photos, both of which it can do. Still, I don't have much interest in tablets for this unless my phone and laptop are dead, so this review is primarily of this as an e-reader. In that sense, it works exactly as I had hoped, and I'm excited to have what feels like an upgrade to the e-reader I used to have that can, in a pinch, also let me do what a broader-purpose tablet can. Recommended!

 Heads up, it's not recommended to buy from the Good Ereader store, they have famously bad customer service, and it's not really recommended to buy from [onyxboox.com](https://onyxboox.com) either, they have Boox devices with unusual firmware which causes problems for people when updates are pushed from the actual Chinese manufacturers.

Colour is indeed still in its infancy (last I checked: 4096 colours, a bit washed out, and 100 ppi). If you really want colour, a traditional tablet will be much better (which kinda defeats the purposes). Or maybe the [TCL NXTPAPER](https://www.tcl.com/global/en/tablets/tclnxtpaper-mid/landing.html) once it comes out -- IDK, seems like vapourware.

Your two main choices for screen sizes are going to be 7.8/8 inches, or 10-ish inches. The vast majority of these readers will have lighting (and even warm lighting) capabilities, so no need to worry about that. 

Scribd/other reading apps can be installed if you get an Android-based reader (which is most of these 8+ inch ones). Of course, you could also install Reddit/Twitter on them, so... don't do that?

Onyx Nova 3 goes for $330-ish ($420-ish with colour). 7.8 inch screen. Note3 is another $200 or so, 10.3 inches.

Cheaper alternative would be the Boyue Likebook series, with the Likebook P78 going for around $220. Runs an older version of Android, though, and might feel a bit more sluggish.

PocketBook/Kobo probably aren't good options for you because you want connectivity that can only be found in Android readers.

I've been trying to get more into reading, as I am a big fan of the Halo franchise and really wanted to read the books. I recently subscribed to Scribd as they have pretty much all the books on there, as well as a plethora of other books and audiobooks that I am interested in. I am open to switching platforms if there is another platform with the Halo books, but I haven't found one yet (I haven't looked hard).

However, reading on my phone, especially at night, has not been productive. I often end up switching to a different app (reddit, twitter, etc.), and distracting myself instead of focusing. I want a device that is solely dedicated to reading so I can compartmentalize reading away from my "always connected" device.

What I am looking for is the following features  
\-eInk display. I want to be able to read it like it is a regular book  
\-Some sort of lighting. It doesn't need to be bright, but I often read in the dark as its more immersive for me. I just need something so I can see the words  
\-Can use scribd, and potentially other apps for reading. As I said, I'm up for other subscription options that aren't scribd, but I'm reading specifically for Halo. Having more apps to access more books would just be nice overall so I can keep the reading streak alive

Nice to have features would be  
\-Color display option. I read comics, and I've heard some of these displays are getting really good color options, so I'd be interested in seeing this.   
\-PDF reading capabilities. Sometimes I get books in PDF form (my therapist recently sent me one), and I've very much like a better space to read these on rather than my phone or PC

I think thats about it. Budget isn't super small and fairly flexible, but I'm not looking for anything ground breaking here, as its my first ereader. I intend to go more all out with round 2, especially as from what I read, color is still in its infancy and developing.

Help finding an ereader that fits me

 How is it possible that books won't turn work/page turn on Onyx's own native apps? I'll admit that I am completely clueless as to how all of the reviewers are loading, opening, and marking-up PDFs with a native app. I had to download XODO to mark-up/underline with the stylus. Trying to open PDFS on the Boox natively results in not being able to turn pages as well. Adobe Acorbat works fine, but you have to underline, there isn't really a highlighting function

Wanted to Love This Device, but I Can't

Unlike Kindles, the Note Air 2 has a speaker and a microphone. The tablet lacks a headphone jack&mdash;the whole thing is slimmer than a 3.5mm plug&mdash;but you can connect Bluetooth headphones to it. A power button and a USB-C port round out the exterior features

 The app caught up eventually, but the experience is still a little disconcerting. I spoke to Onyx about this issue and I'm confident it is going to fix this lag with a software update that extends the buffer.

Onyx Boox Note Air 2 Review

 Period.  And the battery life. Hours and hours and hours of battery life. Days in fact

 Using Googledocs, the text is beautifully readable and especially so in the sun.  First and foremost, I bought this for the E-Ink screen. I did not and do not expect it, in terms of refresh rate, to behave like your typical tablet. Give it another several years and maybe they'll get there, but if you're buying this tablet, you're getting it for the E-Ink technology

First Impressions

 I couldn't get the brightness and tint to a level that didn't hurt my eyes and lead to headaches. I found it much better to just use dark mode on my Samsung Android tablet instead. Hopefully the technology will improve over the years.
