You should grind finer than when using a pressurized basket to get proper extraction. Grind size for espresso is really important. You might be able to find a used Baratza Sette in your price range. It can be hard to fine tune with a manual grinder, so if you care about your espresso, making the investment in a grinder is probably worth it

Today I received an exceptional upgrade from an old Melitta Espresso machine to a Calphalon Temp IQ.  I purchased it from Facebook marketplace, but brand new for $100.  I also purchased a bottomless filter to go with it.  I will describe my process as to give a full explanation.

/* Reduced to 15 grams as 18 was making it impossible to lock the filter into place
/* Made an awful mess of grounds on my counter
/* Tamped with 30 pounds of force, warmed cup
/* I used the automatic 2 shot function, later I will find manual as it stops volumetrically. I want to try to stop it at 30 seconds and weigh the output (Im aiming for 15g in, perhaps 25g out. Im open to suggestions.

    So, the espresso extracted in about 12 seconds going from black to practically water by the end.  I am relatively new to trying to pull a genuine shot, but I do know that it is likely under-extracted.  
    Unfortunately, research revealed to me that I likely was fooled by a grinder that I purchased that was marketed as an espresso "flat burr" grinder.  This made no difference when using a pressurized basket but I am worried that it is simply not adequate. I am aware that I will need to spend quite a lot more money to utilized the unpressurized filter I bought

So, I would like to ask a couple of questions.

New Calphalon Temp IQ and general espresso questions!

 and I would say the biggest con of all is the noise level. It's extremely noisy there's no doubt about it, and you do not have the micro adjustment so you can't fine-tune this one as much as you can. the 270 or that's 270 W Those are the cons. Pros and cons

 It's a fine drip I would call it. So the pros on this machine are: I would say price for what you get. They lowered the price on it, but you're still getting a grinder that does not leave a lot of residual left behind. between the two burrs

 A con: You, you're not gonna get as much programming ability. that's a con compared to the others. and I would say the biggest con of all is the noise level. It's extremely noisy there's no doubt about it, and you do not have the micro adjustment so you can't fine-tune this one as much as you can

Baratza Sette 30 AP | Crew Review

 The customer service team, which deserves high praise, showed me how to find the faulty switch and described a successful workaround until a more permanent fix was possible. It is a good grinder, especially for the price and they are sending me a replacement along with return postage paid for my original one. Good design and great people to work with.

Mine Stopped Working, But Baratza is Making it Good...

I like the "switch on" - it is the cleanest/easiest to use automatic coffee maker that we've used (very simple/clean design) - America's Test Kitchen has voted it the best many times: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD6X72bdc7c   I love its simplicity/excellent coffee/easy to clean - best coffee maker out there. When we bought it, we also decided on a Barratza grinder - we ended up with a different one than I recommend for your mother,, as we were trying to stay in a budget

In my defense, it is not intended for my use, but rather as a gift for my mother. I am very happy, that I was able to make her not Iike instant coffe anymore. And she even prefers speciality beans to supermarket ones. But she finds even an Aeropress too much work, not to mention the manual grinding. So she almost never makes a cup herself.

So I am looking for a bean-to-cup machine, that she could feed a bag speciality coffe beans and then just make cups with button presses. It might not be necessarily an espresso machine.

However, these machines are usually known for their subpar performance, when it comes to quality in the cup.

So are there any good ones? It needs to be able to grind the coffee itself. Also some setting for different roast levels would be nice. Milk-frothing ability is not required, albeit not superfluous either.

Automatic coffee machine

although having trouble getting a really fine grind for espresso- just did 2 shots with it on the finest setting, but it didn't choke the machine, and brewed i n the right time=- that should happen up around the 5-7 mark- but it might be the beans I'm using right now- The bag claimed they were roasted about 3 weeks ago- but not getting good crema, and the coffee is quite sour even down at finest setting, so I think maybe the beans are older than claimed for the roast-  The machine is loud- you won't e holding a conversation while it's grinding- and you will wake up your household if you grind beans early- There is very little retention of grind which is good- I think though the grinder isn't grinding as fine as it should- I should be able to smear the beans and see almost a film at a really fine grind, but i can't with this grinder- there is still a pretty fair amount of grit at the finest setting, not a fluffy powder like it should be- i knocked 1 star off for that- I had a Sette 270 a month ago from a different company that ground very fine- but unfortunately had to send back- I know there are shims, but with a new machine, i wouldn't think it would need to be shimmed right away?  Anyways- it is grinding espresso good enough almost, for now, There doesn't 'seem to be' much difference when 'microadjusting', but i can't say for sure without a screen sifting test- Other than the sound, and grind size though it's working fine- Being a straight through design, which is meant to cut down on grind retention, there isn't much that can be done about the sound- and that does work pretty well- hardly any grounds left in the machine when done grinding

Great grinder for the price! I owned Baratza Vario and Preciso and I miss the lower (and less loud) tone from Vario and the taste from Preciso. But Virtuoso and Preciso are problematic ones, and the Sette is sturdier. Very practical, retains around 1g and probably exchange less than that from shot to shot, so you always get 18g ground from 18g beans, for instance. Very easy to clean if you want to change coffee or method

Found a local barely used Eureka Mignon Specialita for $250, super excited to upgrade from my hand-grinder Lido E. I loved my hand grinder for the last two years, but it's finally time to move on from hand grinding over 60g of beans every day.

Scored a crazy deal with an almost brand new Eureka Mignon Specialita on Facebook marketplace, my coffee/espresso journey is completed...for now.

First espresso setup was a Gaggia Classic and Rancillo Rocky. Upgraded and tweaked it as far as I feel like it could go before upgrading to the Decent DE1+ and Eureka Specialita.

What was your first machine?

I just pulled my first shot with Eureka Mignon Specialita + Gaggia Pro Classic after using shitty grinder for a while, and IT’S EYE OPENING. I’m very far away from sophisticated coffee snob, so couldn’t imagine that I could taste such a huge difference with the same type of coffee but only changing the grinder.

 3) Clean, minimal aesthetic for the those who love simplicity — especially in the matte black. Very understated. No unnecessary decor added; the buttons are tucked neatly on the side. The powder coated finish feels very premium

 ::::: END UPDATE :::::::  So due to these gripes, I give the machine four stars. If you aren't too OCD about the mess and trapped grounds after each use, you'll be happy with the machine because the complaints are mostly mitigated by other features and/or the incredible price point. And the stepless grind adjustment makes this is an ideal entry level machine with lots of room to grow for someone really interested in learning to dial in shots. This machine is a great value

I am a little bit of a coffee snob, if you know what I mean. I brew my own filtered coffee all the time, mostly pour over, but occasionally I will brew a french press or aero. After spending much time learning about how to brew excellent coffee, I knew that having a good grinder can go a long way. I picked this grinder because it was in a price a could afford and had everything I was looking for in a grinder

 If there were two things I was not a fan of, the catch and release piece at the bottom of the hopper is a bit flimsy and looser than my liking, and while the stepless dial is nice, it can take some getting use to when your completely going off of taste and if you decide to do another brew that needs a different grind setting, it can be hard to remember the previous dial you set. But honestly it not the biggest deal. The grind quality is good, however visually, I do see more finer bits than I thought. ultimately though, taste should speak for it self
