Sounds great when they work

My previous reference point is a set of Fluance AI40, and a set of Audioengine A2 on a nuforce udaq. The B&W, despite being 24 years old, clean the floor with both of them. Crystal clear highs, smooth and punchy bass that I never found the bottom of. Mids were lacking a little, but a slight tweak on the EQ and they’re as perfect as my ear can hear

Have to brag about my thrift store score of a lifetime

  I'd say the passive aspect of these speakers is great for the price point but without the steelaeries engine (software on laptop), using dts headphone surround sound setting in windows, they lose a lot of the oomph I like in my music while watching movies or tvs.  With the setup through laptop, dts surround, steel series headset base station, to speakers, I feel that the bass is good for a 2.0 setup.

Haven't spent much time with a direct usb connection from laptop to speakers, but I believe it was better than headphone aux port. When using the aux port from the steelseries base station to the speakers, basically pre-amped at that point, the speakers are really quite good and worth the price tag.  I dont think I'd be satisfied at this price if I didn't already have a $300 wireless headset whose base station acted as an intermediary between laptop and speakers

  I know my laptop is bluetooth 5.0, but not impressed at all.  Maybe the bluetooth protocol just sucks. Seems like an audio only wireless signal protocol should be higher quality after this many years of refinement imho

I used to use professional studio monitors (not super expensive ones, just modest JBL or KRK), but recently had to downsize my space. Even though I moved from an external MOTU and those large monitors to these small speakers, for most of what I do except the most detailed music listening, these are very good. The bass can be a little too much - but that may be due to my constrained installation location, and I haven't figured out how to put an EQ in Windows.  They're very convenient to use: just plug in the USB

 Still, that is a rare need so I'm not going to ding them.  Overall, I am very happy with the quality and convenience (USB connection) for the small size. I only wish they were a bit less expensive.

 My onboard iMac speakers sounded better. To put the icing on the cake, the Bluetooth had such a lag that I couldn’t even watch a movie as the sound was so out of sync. So.

..ESPECIALLY for the PRICE! Muddy sound: poor low end response in the 125-250 range, and totally muffled high end. 2-16 khz needed a major boost to get anything to sound clear

 Even as someone who was significantly less knowledgeable in audio reproduction, I was still able to appreciate the sound these speakers put out. I will not go too in depth about bass, as I had only used these speakers without a subwoofer for about a couple hours total, just know that it is fairly average for casual music listening but sub-par if you decide to utilize it for film/bass-dependent music.  CURRENT PERSPECTIVE: Disregarding the fact that these had blown out on me, I currently believe these speakers are not worth the absurdly high price. Although I still believe the mid-range is warm and quite rich, both the low-end and high-end struggle to reproduce sounds nicely

 These are not my current opinions.  These speakers were an upgrade from the Creative Sound BlasterX Kratos S5 2.1 Gaming Speaker, which was a muddied and lack-luster 2.1 system

 At the time, however, they were average sounding to me. I wanted to upgrade to something of the same size profile that had a clearer and fuller profile. I gravitated toward the A2+, as I believed in the misconception that these were phenomenal sounding high fidelity speakers (They do not claim to be this, but certain reviews of this product facilitated that idea). I had also seen them on a multitude of setups and thought they fit aesthetic of my own

 These speakers still look phenomenal though, and packaging is premium enough to justify a higher price tag, but not $260. For reference, as soon as I refunded my A2+, I went ahead and purchased a pair of KRK RP5 G4 Studio Monitors for the exact same price (These monitors are also fairly controversial, but I personally really enjoy their soundstage and less colored sound).  WRAPPING THINGS UP (Pros and Cons):  Pros: - Spectacular packaging - Additional cables that allow for multiple ways to connect to a source - Rich mid-range for small profile - Premium build quality (hefty with a clean finish) - Smaller setups will benefit from the size - Volume does get relatively loud  Cons: - Highs are lacking clarity - Bass is quite average from 90hz to 200hz, anything below that is quite awful without a subwoofer - The speakers do not do a great job at stereo imaging - Speakers are impossible to EQ without a 3rd party software - The price is absurd for over glorified desktop speakers - Subtle details in music get lost, making these speakers terrible for mixing/mastering (This is not what these speakers are intended for, but it is something to keep in mind) - Personally, these blew out on me twice at pretty normal listening volumes.  A few notes: - I do not believe these speakers are horrible, I just think the price you pay for them is not justified

Phenomenal looking speaker, not so phenomenal sounding.

 (As an aside, I got the white ones and they are very cool-looking, although adding the black speaker stands below them will add a cluttered look to my desk and detract from the nice design.)

 So the good news is that these are good speakers; the bad news is that you need to buy the speaker stands, adding an extra $29 to an already expensive set of computer speakers (I currently have folded dish towels beneath them as I await the arrival of the speaker stands). I'm sure the reason the Bose speakers sound better is because they are designed to angle upward, which makes perfect sense. These speakers should be similarly redesigned. They are not bookshelf speakers -- they're desktop speakers, meaning they're always going to be below your ear level and will always require the speaker stands for a better listening experience

 Given all of the stellar reviews, including topping several lists of best computer speakers, I couldn't understand it. I considered sending them back, but decided to wait a few days. Lo and behold, one day I lifted them at an angle and the difference was night and day. The sound was clear and crisp

Be Sure to Buy the Speaker Stands

 I like the styling. WHAT'S BAD: I bought these specifically because I wanted to use wired USB to avoid any issues with analog noise or wireless interference. But when wired with USB, there is a very loud pop whenever the system turns on. I don't think that's acceptable from a product which claims to be high-quality audio equipment

 WHAT'S SO-SO: The bass is limited, as these are small speakers. Their marketing says "To say the bass on the A2+ is substantial for their size may be an understatement, but you be the judge." Well, my judgement is they are only typical for a speaker this size. I was hoping for more as they are pretty expensive

Very clear mid-range and highs; the USB audio pops unacceptably when powered on

 Hooked them up, and my first impression was that they sounded good, but empty in the middle. Sure enough, when I A/B'd them against the ProMedia 2.1's, it was no contest.

 I listen mainly to classical as I work at my home office desk. For the past 5 years or so, I've used Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 (two desktop speakers about the same size as the A2+, and a subwoofer), which I've been happy with but decided to try an upgrade. I'd had my eye on these Audioengine speakers for a while, as they seem to get very favorable reviews

 They're magnetic, they look great, and they do have cutouts at the bottom for the volume knobs. You have quick access to turn it up and down, and the remote control sensor. They do also come with a wireless remote for easy control from across the room. So these are the PSB Alpha AM3s and the AM5, some really nice powered stereo bookshelf speakers with Bluetooth and phono inputs, a lot of really cool flexibility here, and they sound great
