 So while I don't feel like they're game changing in any way, and while I don't feel like they're anything super special, they're reasonably well-rounded and they're affordable. So with that in mind and with their faults in mind, I'm going to say I think that these are actually a relatively decent pair of headphones. I came into this rather skeptical. I had heard a few sets in the past and M50X was not a big fan of those

 So I mean, we'll get to that at some point. But along with build comes comfort. They were better than any of the Bose ones that I tried that costed way more than this. Honestly, you know, I like these more than the SHP 9500s, things like that

 And that's how, you know, it is locked and it's not going to pull out. So downside of that being that, you know, if you step on the cable and expect this to just pull right out of the headphone as a safety, that's probably not going to happen. You're probably going to end up like maybe damaging your cable, hopefully not damaging your headphones. That specific case, I feel like these wires are probably cheap to replace

 They were better than any of the Bose ones that I tried that costed way more than this. Honestly, you know, I like these more than the SHP 9500s, things like that. I think it would be a relatively difficult choice if you were trying to pick between these and the 598C, the closed version, just kind of based off what sound preference you like. The 598C is a more well-rounded headphone

Audio Technica M40X - Review

 Detail and soundstage are still present. All very good signs. Earpads still a little uncomfortable.  16-hour Impressions, Brainwavz Angled Pads: My opinion of these pads hasn't changed much since I first tried them

  Stock Earpads: These are the best isolating by far, but are the worst when it comes to comfort around the ears. They also have a warmer sound signature with a spike in the highs at the 10k frequency. This peak makes them sound "artificial" and "metallic" in some ways. Guides that I've found online outline ways to correct this peak, but it always results in the overall sound character being changed as well

 Equal amount of good things and bad things. Here's what I have to say about them.  Stock Earpads: These are the best isolating by far, but are the worst when it comes to comfort around the ears. They also have a warmer sound signature with a spike in the highs at the 10k frequency

  Shure HPAEC840 Earpads: I like these a lot less than I did at the start. Bass disappears, as does isolation, but the 10k peak is lowered by quite a bit as well. When I say isolation disappears, I mean that its getting really close to being like an open set of headphones. You want to turn the volume up more with these pads on, but because they are no longer warm, you're stuck with loud mids/highs

 And lastly, the seal on your ears is pretty tight, so it does a pretty decent job at rejecting ambient noise around you in your room. Now, when it comes down to it, these are not going to replace my MDR7506s for mixing, but I will admit, these are a lot less straining on your ears just for casual listening over long periods of time. So in terms of pros, these do actually have a fairly neutral frequency response. They are relatively cheap for what you're getting

 If you do want to spend a little more go for the ones above these (forgot the name). They cancel noise pretty well.

I mean.

 In fact, these headphones have a more neutral sound that's perfect for studio monitors, where you want to detect any flaws in the mix. It's also perfect for anyone who wants to hear music exactly as it was recorded, with no distortion. -Decent comfort. I have big ears, and I'm finding that if the phones are positioned the wrong way the cups hurt the edges of my ears

 -If you want bass, you might consider stepping up to the M50, which were designed for just that purpose. The M40 may actually be better for neutral sound or for studio monitors than the more expensive M50, but the M50 does have the bass-heavy profile some people are looking for.  Overall: I highly recommend these headphones. They deliver almost exactly the same audio experience of headphones that cost multiple times as much money, and do so in a way that leaves you scratching your head as to exactly how they're so inexpensive

People used to modern headphones are probably going to complain right off the bat that the bass on these headphones is low, but that's the wrong way around, most other headphones artificially crank up the bass because psychologically most people think that loud bass is better quality

 What this results in is sound that is very accurate you're essentially hearing the track the way it was meant to be heard. Having all frequencies present creates clear instrument separation in all genres of music. The frequency response on the M40Xs goes all the way down from 15 hertz and up to 24 000 hertz providing a broad range across all frequencies. Highs are crisp and clear you can hear the finest nuances and details especially in vocals though when listening at higher volumes this can be a bit harsh and lead to some listening fatigue

 This all makes the headphones quite iconic and instantly recognizable. I quite like the design. To me they feel less like an elegant pair of headphones but more like a tool that is really built to last sturdy and meant for a professional environment. While the M40Xs feature a mostly plastic build to me they are well put together and feel sturdy in the hand

The headband also offers plenty of stretch making it great for both larger as well as people with smaller heads. Now along the sides of the headband you can extend and shorten this via a click mechanism and one thing I really like about the system is that it is quite stiff so that means that it won't be adjusting on its own when say taking it in and out of your bag or when taking it on and off your head

 That said as mentioned earlier the passive noise isolation is truly great and this definitely contributes to a better sense of immersion. When using the M40Xs for mixing sound in video editing I found them to be an absolute joy to work with. Knowing that these provide flat and neutral sound gives me reassurance when editing multiple audio elements in video and ensures me that the audio is balanced in the way that I want. Now I mentioned this in my previous Sony MDR7506 review and the same applies here

I really love these. I also have a pair of the AD700s, but if these are closer I'm just as happy to pick them up. I was a little worried I wouldn't like the straight band (vs the winged type on the AD700s), but it is very comfortable and doesn't give me a pressure headache like I experienced with a previous set I had by Astro, which these triumphantly replaced. They're very light, which also helps

Worth what to me was on the pricey side

 Now it's got two cables which we'll talk about in a second but these are light gaming headsets built with aluminum, it's got a very light frame, it's got 40mm drivers and it's got some nice decals around as you can see the Audio-Technica logo on there in that mesh design. You've got soft leather on the top there with Audio-Technica basically printed on top and a nice soft mesh where your head actually will rest. Now I have to mention this review, I didn't mention earlier, this review has been recorded using the mic of this gaming headset so I'm actually recording this whole audio using this very mic that you see here which is actually very nice and you can hear the sound quality so I'm giving you my sound sample as I record the audio of this. So that's the first mic there, you also have a second mic which is actually a mobile mic which you use on the go, you can use it with your smartphone, you can also use an other mic with your smartphone but this is more of the mobile mic, it's got a volume slider, it's got a call answer button and you can listen to music with this as well as answer phone calls and again the mechanism to plug it in is pretty simple, on the left ear cup you just push it in, it's really a 3.5mm jack so any cable cords will still work with that
