 These shoes have carried me through a lot of Ultra marathons and they continue to carry me as a train up for the next one. I'm hoping Ultra does something about the tongue and the laces because if they do, these puppies might actually get a perfect freaking score. Now remember, shoes and gear and nutrition are so different for everyone. People's feet, bodies, biomechanics, their stomachs

 Now, I've heard a lot of people going back and forth about the durability of Ultras, but these Olympus fours are absolute beasts. I have well over 300 plus miles in this shoe or in this pair of shoes in this red pair of shoes, and they have no real bad significant damage. I've ran this pair of shoes into the freaking ground, through snow, rain, up mountains, on loose gravel roads, pretty much any condition that you could possibly think of. The tread, of course, has some wear and tear, especially in the middle of the foot, where it's a little bit squishier, but it doesn't seem to affect the performance that much

 That's when these little corks of this gear really become apparent. So let's dive right into it and let's look at the Olympus Fours from Ultra. These shoes have been out for quite a while now, but they did just release some new color schemes so it is safe to say that we have a couple more months until they release the 4.5 I personally have had two pairs of these shoes and I've worn them for a combined amount of over 500 plus miles total

 So durability. I'm gonna give our first five out of five. So there we have it. The Olympus forwards are coming in with a great score of 13

Altra's Olympus 4 In-Depth Review - After Ultramarathon Review - 500+ Mile Review

5 for about 600 miles before I got the Olympus. One can put in a 3/4 shoe insert to create the arches in the shoe that you want. I only have a 50 miles on the Olympus but I love their cushioning so far.

I use La Sportiva Wildcats, but I have a few complaints:

* By the end of a long day, the soles of my feet are quite sore.  There are no blisters or hot spots, they just feel as if they've been crushed.  My pack tends to be pretty light, so I don't think carrying too much weight is the issue.  I don't know if it's the shoes' fault; maybe I just need to toughen up my feet.
* They seem to dry pretty slowly, even though they're considered one of the fastest-drying La Sportiva models.
* I'd prefer a slightly wider toe box.

The first issue is the one I'm most keen to solve.  I'm seeking recommendations for a shoe that:

* Fits similarly to the Wildcats (but with a bit wider toe box, ideally)
* Is gentler on the soles for long days.  (Not sure what this requires -- more padding?  Less heel drop?)
* Dries as fast or faster

I've tried the following shoes:

* Salomon X Ultra 3 Low Aero: rubbed badly on my heels, causing severe blisters.
* Topo Ultraventure and Mtn Racer: fit pretty well, but I think a bit high-volume for my feet.  I got numb toes while wearing both of these, which may be because I had to tighten the laces too much (to compensate for high volume?).  They also felt awkward and "slappy" while running, particularly on downhills.  And they didn't seem to solve the issue with sore soles, although they might have been *slightly* better than the Wildcats in that respect.
* Altra Olympus 3.5: caused pain in my arches and felt somewhat awkward/unstable.

ISO shoes like Wildcats but gentler on the soles of the feet

 My problem was finding after market high arch orthotics that fit their shape. If I had size 11 or 12 ee maybe eee I would have bought Sole Pro Thin or Sole Karnizes size 14 wide's and cut them to shape.

I have very high arches. Like, top 5% of the population high haha. Any advice?

Now I'm hesitating pulling the trigger.

Anyone had success with sticking with Altras, but throwing in some insoles? I hear the Superfeet Greens are good for high arches, but what about the Trailblazers?

The YouTuber I was watching switched to a pair of Topos and liked them, does anyone have any input?

I want a shoe that has the cushion and drop of my Hoka Speedgoat with the toebox of my Altra Olympus 4.0.

Beware they do run very narrow at the toe and are not for everyone. If you needed the extra toe room you could look to the Hoka EVO Speedgoat,. EVO Mafate 2 or the Mafate Speed 3, all of which are high cushioned but have a stretchy bit of fabric over the toe, which can make the fit more accommodating.

I currently run in Nike Pegasus Trail Gore Tex. they are ok. But not great. 

Recently switched my road shoes to Hoka Rincon 2 for slower, longer runs and Saucony Endorphin Pro for speed runs.  I quite like the cushioning on the Rincons and am now looking for a trail shoe. 

I am nervous as the Speedgoat 4 were originally released January 2020 and the speedgoat 3 the January before that. So a little concerned that a Speedgoat 5 comes out soon.

Shoes for long days of running &amp; hiking

I’ve done a couple ultras in loose snow, which felt a lot like running in sand to me. I’ve used both the SpeedCross and Hoka SpeedGoat. The ‘goats might have had the advantage due to the much wider sole helping with flotation, but I felt they got a lot heavier when wet. In all instances I studded the soles with about 8 sheet metal screws at the end of some select lugs, which I felt helped with a little extra grip even when ice wasn’t an issue

Wondering if anyone had any advice about shoes that may be better suited for sandy environments. I’m used to running in rocky, rooty, muddy Vermont environments and want to be better prepared for a trail that is relatively flat but very sandy. I currently sport the Salomon speed cross 5s and have used them in sand before but really don’t feel like the larger lugs give any advantage

Recommendations for trail shoes for sand

For years I wore boots (really heavy), then shoes (heavy) and now trail runners (not so heavy). I prefer the Hoka One Speedgoat trail runners. They are good for dry conditions, have great grip and stability (for me). I have never had ankle stability issues, so it works great

, (4) have great cushioning for all-day wear on sharp surfaces, and (5) are not so heavy that I feel like I'm fighting the shoe when picking up the pace. I've run in Altra Timps and Lone Peaks, Brooks Caldera 4, La Sportiva Jackal, Salomon Sense Ride 3, and Topo MTN Racer 1s and none of these had all-day underfoot cushioning and protection against sharps like the Speedgoats. The durability of my Speedgoats have been good.

I’m looking to purchase a new pair of trail running shoes as I’ve beat the boots I’ve been using to death. I like the look of some of the Nikes (pegasus trail 2 gtx, wildhorse 7) but I wanted some input from yall. I tend to run on pretty rough terrain (up mountains and such) so don’t wanna get something too delicate.

New trail running shoes

I run in the Speedgoat 3s and the Speedgoat 4 is a step back for me with regards to weight since it got heavier. The Speedgoat Evo on the other hand, is a huge improvement and superior to the Speedgoat 3 and 4.

For 3 season hiking I chose Hoka speedgoat 3, followed very closely by the brooks cascadia. They're both VERY comfortable shoes that are light and breath + dry very well. Lightness + Breathability + Drying quickly > a heavy gnarly boot that tries to keep you clean and dry but inevitably will get water logged from sweat anyway or the elements, just might take longer vs a trail runner. Also 1 pound on your foot is 5 pounds on your back

I'm  new to hiking but my girlfriend finally convinced me to go to a hiking  trip with her, somewhere around Schönau am Königssee and on the mountain area around it (nothing extreme tho). I've been looking for some proper shoes cause I'm  pretty sure I would regret it if I go with my ultra boost, and I've  found a few alternative:

1. Salomon  Quest Prime GTX: The only boots. Is it okay or overkill? I think it's  the most robust of them all and I can wear it when hiking during winter  or ski vacation. (114 euro)
2. Salomon  XA Pro 3D V8: trail runners, seems really comfy. However, no  waterproofness (can't use it in winter). I don't know if it offers  enough protection and grip? (96 euro)
3. Salomon  Trailster 2 GTX: quite similer to the XA, with GTX waterproofness.  However I've heard some controversy regarding GTX on trail runners (too  warm, sweaty feet). (72 euro)
4. Last  but not least: Merell Moab 2 (vents or GTX). Mother of all boots.  Almost bought the vents one immediately but read that it's really,  really prone to getting wet (even with just some wet grass). Not sure if  it's true and if I should just get the GTX version. Both around 80-90  euro.

What do you guys  think? Sadly I can't go to Globetrotter cause of the 'rona. I appreciate  any answer or if you have other suggestions, I would be very thankful!  Thanks and sorry for the long post. :)

<p>UPDATE: Hey guys, I ordered both Merrell Moab Mid GTX (boots) and Salomon XA Pro 3D v8 non-GTX (trail runner) and will compare which one is more comfy. I think salomon would be more versatile and less of an overkill but let&#39;s see. Kinda tempted of the idea of having  &quot;real&quot; boots in addition to my Timbs for winter :)</p>
