Consumers who’ve already done some preliminary shopping will no doubt have come across more than a few models from Acer. The Taiwanese company produces several lower-cost laptops, but its Spin 1, which can be found online for around $250, deserves special recognition. It’s an 11.6-inch model that’s known as a convertible: It can be used like a traditional notebook but can also double as a tablet thanks to a swiveling hinge. (Yes, it’s a touch screen.)  Beyond this, our testers appreciated the Spin 1’s lengthy battery life of more than 14 hours in our lab; its large, comfortable keyboard; and its variety of integrated ports, including HDMI (for connecting to an HDTV), SD card, and three USB 3.0 ports.  Are there any trade-offs? Sure. The Intel Celeron N3350 processor certainly isn’t the fastest to pass through our labs. You get only 4GB of memory (RAM) and 32GB of hard drive space.  In practice that means you probably won’t be able to run too many apps at the same time without slowing things down, and you’ll have to be judicious about which multimedia files you store locally. Everyday productivity files—Word documents and the like—will be fine, but downloading a ton of audio or video files could lead to problems. Good thing we’re living in the age of Spotify, YouTube, and Netflix.

According to our benchmarks, the Celeron N3350 CPU is fractionally as fast as a dual-core Intel Core i3 processor that you might find in an entry-level notebook. It doesn't take much to bog down the Celeron, especially if you're multitasking. Loading multiple web pages at the same time is one way to do it

If you're expecting the Spin 1 to plow through complex workloads and edit 4K videos, you've picked the wrong machine. But if you want to surf the web, deliver PowerPoint presentations, and stream HD video, it should be able to keep up. Its circa-2016 Intel Celeron N3350 processor has just enough pep to render complex webpages without a hiccup. Light multitasking isn't a problem, thanks to its just-enough 4GB of system memory

 The Core m3-powered Dell Inspiron 3179 scored far higher than the others in that benchmark. Available as an option on pricier Spin 1 models, the Pentium N4200 in the Acer Switch 3 and the Dell Latitude 3189 was noticeably faster in the Cinebench and Handbrake tests than the Celeron N3350. At least the Celeron was slightly faster than the older Atom x5-Z8350 in the Asus Transformer Mini T102HA.

The Spin 1 put up performance in line with its integrated Intel HD 500 graphics in our 3D tests, but that's about all we can say. Browser-based gaming is all you can really expect from this level of hardware.

Our Spin 1's 9-hour-plus showing in our battery rundown test wasn't enough to make it a segment leader, but that's still a very usable amount of time off the plug. Add in plenty of ports and a stylish design, and a better value at this price point is tough to find.

So I've been using a 15-inch laptop for the last few years and while it's nice to have that extra power,, having something that's this small and portable was a huge help

 What's cool is the Spin 1 also comes with a free year of Office 365, which is cool 'cause that like $100 on its own,. So at first glance, the Spin 1's not bad. but the real test is going to be how does it stack up when I take it on a very, very long trip. So I am now on the other side of the world in Shanghai, China, and for the last week or so, the Spin 1 has held up

. Having A free year of Office 365 included is also a nice bonus, so I Wrote up all the notes for this video inside of Word and it's a nice experience. So The keyboard is surprisingly good on the Spin 1, so it has nice keyboard travel, The layout is solid with the exception of the page up and down keys, which kind of tripped me out a little bit, but there's really not a lot to complain about. and that same thing goes for the track pad

 Considering The price, the main competitor to something like the Spin 1, is going to be a Chromebook And don't get me wrong, I do like Chrome OS, However,, personally, for me, I do like having a full version of Windows 10, but you are going to have to deal with some compromises.. One Area where the lower specs are helpful is with battery life. So Even when you're doing fairly demanding tasks, I Never saw the battery life estimate drop below around seven hours

What's nice about it is it's
actually reasonably portable.

You know what, I actually
kind of like the look of this.

It's still plastic but it
actually doesn't feel bad.

Open this guy up and you'll
see it's running a full

Considering that this
is about the same price

as a lot of tablets, it's
nice to get the full Windows

experience and of course you
still do have that touchscreen.

you get some flexibility
in how you use the Spin 1.

So of course you can use it
in the standard laptop mode

but if you want, you can
actually flip it upside down

to get display mode, so if
you wanna be able to watch

videos like this or one of
my favorites is tent mode

where you flip it upside-down,
it's nice if you wanna get

a little bit more of a compact form factor

you can just close it
up and use it like that.

So it is a rocking a full
1920 by 1080 resolution

Now that's important as a
lot of other budget laptops

definitely skimp in the screen department.

So the Spin 1 is a solid
laptop for video consumption,

it's of course powerful
enough to stream stuff

like 1080p video and with that nice screen

and some surprisingly solid
speakers, it works well.

Inside, the Spin 1 has a dual
core Intel Celeron processor,

four gigabytes of memory,
and 32 gigs of storage.

So for what I'm going to be doing with it,

mostly lighter stuff like
web browsing, video watching,

but don't expect it to handle
demanding tasks very well.

Now that 32 gigs of storage
doesn't sound like a lot

but thankfully the Spin 1
does have a micro SD card slot

so for about $40, you can
expand with 128-gig card,

which should give you
a lot more usability.
