The Yamaha FS800/FG800 is the king of starter guitars for a reason. But they actually aren't "starter" because they rival guitars even in the $600 price range. They're not beautiful per se, but they play great, stay in tune and sound good. Especially if you get it setup(although they come ready to play, I just prefer to lower the saddle a bit) They're also built like tanks.

I own a Seagull S6 and a Yamaha FS800 (so this isn’t an exact comparison) and they’re both good guitars. You can’t go wrong with either one but keep in mind the Seagull has a pretty wide and flat neck that isn’t for everyone.

I would say look for a Yamaha FG800 or FS800. For $200 it will take him far further than any cheaper guitar from Fender will. See if you can get it set up as well so that it’s comfortable to play. They are truly lovely guitars regardless of price and have a build quality much higher than others at that price.
