The Yamaha DZR12 is the top tier. People may argue the relative merits of QSC K.2 vs Yamaha DXR mkII but they're definitely in the same league. With that in mind, and given the relative pricing down under, the clear winner to me is the DXR.

Buy these

Excellent speakers! I haven't had a chance to try these at full volume yet, but they are exceptionally clear and crisp at the (loud) medium levels. It's great to have a built-in 3 channel mixer (1x XLR/Microphone, 1x 1/4 TRS, and 1x RCA [stereo pair]) for cases where simple setup is needed.

PA purchase recs requested: new/used? Brands? Price point for our needs?

For tops I’d look at Yamaha DXR12 or EV EKX12. Both are affordable, nice sounding boxes. Don’t get the fancy padded covers - they’re a waste of money - but at least get the cheap Gator padded speaker bags or something similar to protect them.

Sound quality and plenty of power

This speaker is worth the money. The highest volume I tried inside the house was not even 1/4 of the knob. The quality of the sound was superb. I just bought this for home use and is way more than enough but I’m already thinking of getting a 2nd one to pair.

Speaker to record live and play live

In order from best to cheapest, These I can recommend:. QSC K12.2 / Yamaha DXR12 \~ $800 Super reliable and quite loud with very accurate sound reproduction.

I've worked with the DZR12s (with DXS18XLF subs) and with the K12.2s I like the yamahas better, the dzr12s have an amazing clarity and a decent amount of bass. Not enough for the bass to rumble, but if you have a bass amp it should be enough. As far as I know the EV and dxr12 are also good options, and to have the sub right away is also not bad. Hope this helps.

Yamaha DZR12D

I've owned QSC KW153's, KW122's and KW181's, Yamaha DSR112's and DXR12's and JBL PRX715's and PRX718XLF's when it comes to powered speakers. These sound so damn good, get crazy loud and go much lower than you expect.
