Music Direct has them for $300. The Diamond 12.1’s someone else suggested are also a good choice—better speakers than the older 225’s overall, but they are smaller and won’t play as much low bass.

I'm building my first audio setup and I'm getting a Fluance RT82 and a Denon AVR-S650H-R. It'll be in a large bedroom where I don't need a lot of volume/tower speakers, I just want good sound quality. I see a lot of recommendations for active bookshelf speakers in this range but not much for passive bookshelf speakers. My budget is $300-400. I'd like to get something that can ship to me as picking up isn't really an option right now and local craigslist is pretty much empty anyways.

$400 Passive Bookshelf Speakers?

An outstanding bass, great bright highs and mids - they are there. The only thing, in order to make ‘em sound great you need some power and I would say at least 70w per channel is a must. Otherwise at low volumes they WILL sound flat. Wharfedale Diamond 12

Triangle Borea BR03 is front ported and 450.  Pretty decent bass. My previous speakers were the Sony Core Bookshelf's which sounded pretty decent with a subwoofer

Bookshelf speakers, even very expensive ones, typically fall off in the 50Hz range, well above the lots of bass desire. 50Hz can still push out some really clean mid drum percussion but they don't push a lot of air.

Shop quality used speakers and research subwoofers. Expect to pay $500 for a decent sub. You can find used speakers in the $400 range. As with speakers all subs are not created equal. Avoid the $150 subs as one poster mentioned. The goal is quality sound. Take your time.

Best bookshelf speaker under $400?

I just bought a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO and I'm looking to put together my first real hifi system. I'm looking for some pointers on selecting an amp and speakers to get the best sound possible for the money. I have $500-800 left to spend.

I've come up with a couple of ideas so far:

* Cambridge Audio AXA35 and Q Acoustics 3020i or something similar
* Audioengine A5+ and a \~$100 phono preamp

I'm open to all of your ideas and suggestions. Also, some potentially pertinent information:

* a system that has an optical in somewhere would be a nice-to-have but it is not mandatory by any means, I can always add an external DAC later
* as for speakers, bass is important to me, although my room is not that large so raw power isn't a big deal. Really anything that isn't "bright." I was almost turned off the 3020i by this but apparently they do better on the low end than the older 3020s I heard a while back.
