The simple stand is just fine, and the build quality of the tv is also something that most people don't care about.

You really need either a full-array LED screen, or OLED, which can illuminate specific areas of the screen (or in the case of OLEDs, specific *pixels*). There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but I personally went with the Sony X90J that hits nearly 800 nits in peak brightness. And the difference is literally jaw-dropping. The sun is so bright in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, for instance, that I actually can't look directly at it for very long without seeing after-images.

The Sony X90J is the best mid-range 4k LED TV with a 120Hz refresh rate that we've tested. It's an impressive TV with fantastic contrast, a great response time, and excellent SDR peak brightness. It has a great local dimming feature, making it a great choice for dark-room viewing, and it delivers an impressive HDR movie-watching experience

in terms of budget for the 55’ the Sony X90J i would say is probably jussst outside the budget, and if it helps I live in Ontario, Canada. Thanks!.

Sony x90j is only $1849 through Best Buy right now in a 75 and it’s a fantastic tv. It has Full array local dimming and it’s black levels aren’t bad. It’s a good choice.

[Was able to resolve a lot of the problems - see 06/15/2021 update] One saving grace is Amazon. Since I bought this from Amazon I was able to easily return this first unit after Sony TV engineering declared it defective. Sony support was terrible. First the good news: 1. Picture quality is excellent...

* 4K might come in handy for Netflix or Amazon Prime streams, but that's a pretty occasional use case. * I don't game much, but would like to get something with HDMI 2.1 for future proofing (although it's not a must have). Right now I'm leaning towards the Sony X90J, because it seems like Sony has the best upscaling tech, and I do want one that has very good picture quality, but I'm open to recommendations.
