Samsung X5

I have a similar iMac which has had a Samsung X5 as the external boot drive since I bought it new in 2019. There were not nearly as many options then, so now I would likely go with a NVMe card in an OWC Envoy Express enclosure on one of the TB3 ports. However, even a 10 Gb/s USB drive like a Samsung T7 or SanDisk Extreme will be a significant improvement over the fusion drive. The enclosure is a fixed cost, so it has less impact on the total cost as you go up in capacity.
