1. Windows Defender scanning files being opened/written using a single thread causes a huge bottleneck when dealing with lots of small files on modern SSDs. Multi-theaded scanning would have been immensely helpful, but defender only uses a single thread in these operations (probably multithreaded in some parts, not all) - wow.

 Out of the box it comes formatted as ex-FAT, but reformatting to NTFS made a huge improvement in data transfer speeds. 3. Lastly, the unit comes pre-loaded with an older version of Samsung's Portable SSD software. I'm not sure if it affects how the unit transfers data, but make sure to upgrade it to the latest anyhow (done through the software itself)

 Plugging the unit straight in and transferring the same photos/videos crawled along at ~9'ish MB/s, with dips into the hundreds of KB/s range. 1. An easy and quick fix was Device Manager --> Disk Drives (Samsung T5 SSD) --> Properties --> Policies --> change the "Removal Policy" setting from "Quick Removal" to "Better Performance". This requires you to use the "Safely eject media" option whenever you disconnect or risk damaging the drive

..  -Configuration of your source (PC): As mentioned, the transfer speeds will only be as quick as your weakest link. In my case, I had some changes to make before I achieved the above scenario

 For reference, after tweaking (see below) I ran CrystalDiskMark on my T5 (1 TB version) and got 449 sequential read/write, 270 random IIRC. But in real life practice, transferring 66GB of videos and photos from the Samsung to my internal SSD went at an average rate of 100 MB/s, with spikes up to 170 and lows in the 80's. Transferring to my backup HDD was even slower, averaging in the 50's with low in the teens. This leads me to my next point

EDIT 2/7/2020:  Not worth the price, not even on sale.  Save your money, go with another option.

An external SSD will provide load time improvements (vs using the internal drive), which will be noticeable with some games, but not with others.  For games that rely on a lot of asset streaming, it can improve gameplay by reducing stuttering/stalling and minimizing pop-in.

However, I wouldn't recommend anything less than a 500GB, preferably 1TB or even 2 TB if you can.  Get the biggest you can afford.  Samsung T5 is fine, no need for anything supporting over 500MB/s as even the Series S|X are only USB 3.0

 be sure to power it up every couple of months to prevent the loss of these precious items. I recommend a traditional mechanical HDD for backing up such data, or burning it into high quality optical media, if you have a machine with an optical drive. As with all computer storage devices, they generally will only work on a machine containing the same OS/file handling system of the machine that formatted the drive. Some are interchangeable, but not always

 Just as the the memory sticks in a desktop computer do when you turn off the power.  So if you are going to use yours for a back of important documents, irreplaceable photos, ..

Awesome device, but

 Remember to reformat the device to exPhat if you're using a non-iOS pc to make it compatible. Forgot to mention, but I bought a used version of this drive instead of a new one and it still holds up despite minor external scruffs.

 The X5 did not come anywhere close to the promised 2800 write speed, but I can definitely say it's much faster than the T5 I own and my old hard drive. For kicks, I copied a 5GB file, planet of the apes to itself and that took literally 5 seconds. INSANE!  I do want to say that the read speeds arent impressive. Copying(reading) that same file to my desktop from the X5, oddly only netted me 9mbs, and would occasionally spike up to over 100mbs

I recently purchased the Samsung T5 - 1TB model and by no means is it a bad drive, but I had been reading reviews on the Samsung X5 and wanted to see if it is as fast as people say.  The X5 comes in a nice compact box, and as you can see, is barely bigger than the T5 and fits in my hand easily.  To test the speed of this drive, I did not use any synthetic benchmark testing, as I feel those do not represent real world performance. A fast drive but set your expectations before buying

  This drive only works with a thunderbolt port. It does not work with a USB port. This means it is reliant on the Thunderbolt port. The problem is that your laptop thunderbolt port needs software to work

Does not work without software installation

This thing cant cool the nvme drive inside well enough and sustained writes suffer because of that. At first itll write over 2000 but then after 10 seconds that falls to under 800. Reads are always super fast around 2300. When i first bought it, the writes could go longer before slowing down but nowadays i have come to expect the drop in write performance

 My other TB3 drives tested individually and dont display such a hit because they have much better cooling.
