I bought a PRS Silver Sky earlier this year. It had tons of QC issues, so I returned it and bought another one. That one had a ton of QC issues. Returned it, and bought a 3rd.

I think the Silver Sky can produce the Mayer sound far easier on a wider range of equipment at a better cost. The bridge pickup is actually useable on its own, where with most Strats you'll use the bottom for distortion and... That's pretty much it. I think that's pretty common. Again when looking at middle and top positions, you're getting an aged tone usually reserved for more expensive, more vintage strats.

The PRS SE line is killer and will do all you need it to do. The PRS Custom 24 SE is just about the perfect guitar.

If you're trying to optimise for cleans, I'd probably go for the Silver Sky or any other strat. Even if you reject the tone wood stuff, think dual humbuckers will sound sufficiently different from triple singles. What guitars do you currently have?

It does exactly what it's supposed to achieve, and it plays great. I was positively surprised and would be happy to have that as my strat (I'm a PRS Custom 24/CE 22 player day to day). You get a lot of guitar in the Silver Sky. It's a great well thought through design, and the hardware and electronics are super nice.
