Hey everyone, Dipped my toes into the turntable world and my budget at the current time allowed me to pick up a Pro Ject essential iii and the phono box s2 (which I hope I’ve set correctly) connected to edifier s2000pros. Absolutely loving the experience so far and looking further down the line for some smaller upgrades such as platter, cartridge/stylus, I’m looking to get the most possible out of it and maybe in a year or 2 go all out on a high end, I’m happy to upgrade this as much as possible for the time being since I’ll be using it for quite a while and a lot.

What country are you in? I'm guessing not the USA based on those choices.

In the US: Fluance RT82. In the UK: Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC or Teac TN-3B. In Europe: Pro-Ject Debut III and then buy an upgrade to the OM Stylus 10 or 20.

Rega can have a bit better component and build quality than a Pro-ject of a similar price bracket depending on which turntables you are comparing. Do not buy the Pro-Ject T1, it has a higher wow and flutter than the $99 LP60X, which is not acceptable on a $200+ turntable. Pro-Ject Essential III is better than the T1.

Pro-Jects from 10-15 years ago, like this Essential, the Debut III/Carbon, Genie, and RPM 5.1 are known for motors that aren’t decoupled from the plinth. This results in reports of humming as a manifestation of motor resonance. On dead wax, I have to turn the volume up quite a bit before any audible hum comes through my headphones. It’s possible that this low volume motor noise is coloring the rest of the sound.
