 Next big difference is the platter, the platter here is done also out of MDF, it's heavier than the T1 but again because it's painted with very special lacquer which coming for sure from Austrian companies so we don't import this crazy, it's very high-end, it's also expensive. Why we don't use glass? This is the more expensive solution because you can balance the platter better. So all our high-end products are balanced platter, you know this from the car but it's effort, you need big machines for this, therefore it's a price. In higher end designs we do have then also vertical tracking angle adjustment because we think that over the time the customer will maybe go upgrade the turntable with a better cartridge which I recommend always because the cartridge is just a very very important part and every turntable will sound with a better cartridge

 One thing you have also to understand at any high-end product, any HiFi product is only as good as the weakest point so I can make here the best design when I use a shitty cable I have a shitty result. What is more special? I said we have this in different version, we realized that low-cost turntable tends to put the consumer everything on so they put a phono stage on, put a bluetooth stage on, USB output to record, 3345 switch, electronic everything but not every customer needs everything and the bigger problem is also all these parts which they think they give more or less free, they are more or less free because they are nothing worth because the components are very very low. What you have from a 50 cent component phono stage? Nothing. You have bad sound quality because a good phono stage you can't do with a small board with 50 cents

 When I go from outside to in it moves here in the holder and simply by simple physics we getting here more anti-skating power, you can go to any physics book and you will understand what a power parallelogram means, it's the correct way because a magnetic anti-skating has one anti-skating force, it doesn't change this force, here the force is changed by the positioning of the weight and that's the big difference therefore any high-end toner uses still this simple but correct way, it looks a little bit antique but it's definitely the correct way. So what I also want to mention is what you see also for every customer is very easy to realize in mass market a good turntable from a bad turntable, they only need to look at the cable, in the low-cost turntable you have just a cable, a 50 cents cable and here you have a wonderful cable, golden connectors, metal, housing and perfectly shielding. This cable is a so-called parallel symmetric cable which means plus and minus is separated because usually coax cable puts plus and minus separate but the ground of plus and minus are in one wire, why is this? Because the cartridge is full balanced source, you see you have here the plus and the minus left and right in different cables and this you have also here. But this is already $79 it's already quite reasonable because you find cables with metal connectors in balanced version you find also way over $100 so it's already but we included this because we know it's so important

 In the low cost layers we don't have the adjustability because customers usually upgrade in this area the turntable completely and not only the cartridge. So anti-skating, a lot of people criticize us about our gravity anti-skating, they think magnetic anti-skating are much more modern, I'm sorry I have to say the correct anti-skating is a gravity anti-skating, every high-end toner today does like this, why? Oddly, when purchasing this turntable the sales 'adviser' assured me the tone arm weight would be all set up and ready to install as "we have taped it so that, to paraphrase "all you need to do is to line up the weight and slide it on. This caused me to think two things: 1) This is either really good customer service or 2) something is up. Well, guess what? It turns out the counterweight system on this turntable is a ridiculous Lou Goldberg contraption which the company has an elaborate rationale for but really what they are selling to you at a premium price is a fishing weight suspended by fishing line that is as easy to knock off from the tone arm as it is difficult to install, which it is. If you look this up online you will see that MANY people hate this set up and what the 'adviser' did was put a tie wrap on the end of the tone arm so that the flimsy, nearly invisible 2 pound test fishing line won't roll off the back of the wand and force one to struggle to re-install it on the tone arm: See the picture for the necessary fix to this rather cockamamie set up

DO NOT FALL FOR THE HYPE!!!  YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED!!!

 This is going to ensure that the speed is very stable and it's optimum in terms of stability and it's going to keep any resonance from affecting that as well and it kind of works on the premise of performance and style over just something that looks good in terms of a motor being on there but it is further improved by having an aluminium design on there and that affects the pulley too and it's just going to again provide much more stable speed. Now the Project Essential 3 has got a very good arm on it to be fair for its price point and kind of the budget level of turntable that it is. So it's pre-fitted with an 8.6 inch aluminium toner

 It's very rigid and it's lightweight which is ideal really for getting information off of a record and also tracking a record. The other thing at the top of the arm near the count weight is fitted with a gimbal bearing assembly and this allows much smoother tracking of the arm as it's going across the record so it's not going to have any jerky motions or potentially scratch or damage or distort the record. The tracking is further improved by the use of a sapphire bearing that is also used within the construction and again that's very hard material so it's going to be less subject to any vibration that's going to affect a turntable. The count weight on the back of the arm is very high quality as well and it can allow us to accommodate quite a wide range of cartridges because of it being more of a manual count weight so you've got various adjustments that you can make on that

 Project Essential 3 Turntable is available in several finishes, the standard finishes, we've got the black one here retail around £279. There's also a couple of special edition turntables, there's a George Harrison one and also a Beatles, these are available for £429 and there's limited numbers of these. I have seen the George Harrison and I have to say I thought it was very, very nice. Now one of the key additions to the new Essential 3 is on the top we have an acrylic platter

 For now though, I can't recommend the Marantz PM7000N enough as an all-in-one solution. It sounds great and handles everything I've thrown at it from folk to hip-hop to shoegaze. Currently putting them through their paces with some Guru and Tribe Called Quest.

 The detail is bonkers, and it's nice having a bit more bass 'cause I don't think my neighbor across the hall would appreciate a subwoofer. My next upgrade is replacing the Fluance RT82 with a Rega Planar 3 (unless someone has a better recommendation in the $1000 range) next year around this time, and then I'll probably start looking into cutting the receiver up into separate components a year after that. For now though, I can't recommend the Marantz PM7000N enough as an all-in-one solution. It sounds great and handles everything I've thrown at it from folk to hip-hop to shoegaze

Picked up the second half of my new speaker set (don't ask) today and I can't even believe the difference. Previously I was using a pair of ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2, which are fine, but these KEF Q750s are just a whole other league

Marks out of ten, now that’s a bit difficult. I’m not saying it’s unimprovable, but the Audiolab/Denton combo works really well and I’d say it’s a more grown-up system than most. Everyone who’s listened to my Dentons or Lintons comes away impressed; more consistently than any others I’ve had. But we’re talking your ears, your taste

OK, great amp and speakers. Have those myself. Not sure you need the DAC as you’ll discover the Audiolab’s DAC is pretty good, but as everybody but me seems to be convinced that an external DAC is the passport to audiophile pleasure and credibility, we’ll let that pass for the moment.

 But I love the Dentons and next to the Lintons, my main speakers, they stand up really well. Eventually they’ll be the rear speakers for my own version of surround, and the mains for my mono system (which you’ll realise will be at the other end of the room).

Nonetheless, I’m going to implement the “proven” solution of replacing one of each speaker’s link strips with a 1-ohm 5 watt resistor to balance the sound a little better. But I love the Dentons and next to the Lintons, my main speakers, they stand up really well. Eventually they’ll be the rear speakers for my own version of surround, and the mains for my mono system (which you’ll realise will be at the other end of the room)

It does OK on LPs but compared directly with my aged Thorens TD160 it’s some way short. I also have a Rega Planar 2 for mono LPs (remember the mono system?). That’s a significant upgrade over the AT120, old model or new, but cheaper than the Planar 3 and, critically, less upgradeable. The 3 is a potential money pit as you can upgrade it to the full Planar 6 spec. I find the 2 is pretty good and luckily I caught an ex-demo one at around 25% off. Plenty of other options, though, so worth checking some out. I tend to favour belt-drive, and the Rega being UK-made was a plus for me.

The resistors are on the slow boat from China, but I’ll report on that as soon as they arrive. The process comes up in one of the Denton reviews. I bought the Dentons on spec during the lockdown and have been well impressed. They improved after about 50-100 hours proper playing, as far as I can estimate, so if yours are still new I’d give them a good running in before you move them on.

I bought the Dentons on spec during the lockdown and have been well impressed. They improved after about 50-100 hours proper playing, as far as I can estimate, so if yours are still new I’d give them a good running in before you move them on.

Marks out of ten, now that’s a bit difficult. I’m not saying it’s unimprovable, but the Audiolab/Denton combo works really well and I’d say it’s a more grown-up system than most. Everyone who’s listened to my Dentons or Lintons comes away impressed; more consistently than any others I’ve had. But we’re talking your ears, your taste. I’d say hang on to them until you’re certain you NEED to change them and have auditioned something you like better. Spend some time and money on your vinyl playback and listen to as much as you can on your system and to as many other systems as you can. And give the Audiolab DAC a good workout while you’re at it!

So what a bargain is that you're getting a 300 more expensive cartridge and you're getting it at the same price as this cartridge, they can't make any more it's a great table

So the simple question is, rather than dropping $4,000 for the Nait Uniti Atom, is there a reasonably priced, decent/high-quality CD player that will also handle streaming from the new various sources and push analog thru the outputs??

What could I do to reduce this interference and hum? Would a better power supply help? The Trichord brand ones are way too out of my price range, but I've seen Chinese DIY looking ones on eBay that are similar.

Hi all. My current setup is a Rega Planar 3 with an AT-VM95ML cart, Trichord Dino Mk1 phono (w/ basic power supply, NAD C316BEE V2 and some old Marantz speakers. It's a nice little setup, but I've got a bit of a hum and hiss issue, and I think the phono stage might be the culprit.

When listening through my speakers, the hum is not much of an issue and is only audile when no music is playing and it is very quiet. However, through headphones (Sennheiser HD6XX) it's a different story. They are fairly sensitive headphones, so the hum and hiss is a lot worse. I understand that hiss is inherent in phono stages (I think?), so it's the hum that I think is more the issue
