**Pilot Varsity** - please don't get one of these. They are disposable which really takes away one of the main aspects of fountain pens. In addition, they are very scratchy and cheaply built.

Weirdly I feel like I’ve had the opposite experience with the Pilot varsity. Every one I ever used has been so smooth it made me mad about my other pens. I agree the preppy is really good. It’s one of those pens you use and then wonder if it’s even really worth spending a lot of money on a pen at all.

Pilot Varsity is totally refillable as an eyedropper pen. You left out the Platinum Prefounte, which is in between the Preppy and the Plaisir in price. It is a nicer looking Preppy with a better clip, and I have not heard of problems with the plastic breaking like I have heard about the Preppy. A bit more expensive is the TWSBI GO.

I was hoping these would be more like a true fountain pen. They write nice, but you the ink seems to be gel. Which is nice, but I do not like gel pens. Consider handing out a Pilot Varsity to each student at the beginner of each term. Explain the pen and require some homework or assignment be written with their FPs. You could even have a handout on fountain pens and penmanship for each student. Also consider, writing out assignments with an FP, then copy and pass the assignments to your students.

I love how bright the ink in these pens are, but they do not write all that smooth. It might not write that smooth because they are supposed to be like fountain pens and I have never used a fountain pen so I am unsure of how smooth those write.
