Pilot Metropolitan

I think the Pilot Metropolitan is an excellent “real” fountain pen that is quality and isn’t easily outgrown

First off, let me say that this pen is a joy to write with. The strong black ink flows well from the nib and onto paper in a way JinHao users have not known. (I have both). The pen uses the tried and true Pilot ink cartridges, which are somewhat proprietary, but widely available - and well worth it....

Your budget is way high for a good starter pen :-) lucky him. For that budget a Sailor pro gear slim, Platinum 3776, pilot custom 74 and several good pens could be his options. Depends a lot on writing style, size of the hand and other preferences. Honestly, if he has not written with fountain pens extensively yet, I would start with a Pilot Metropolitan.

On the plus side I like the looks, size and weight of this pen. It's a little heavier than a lot of other pens but I like the weight, it feels solid and well made. Screw down caps can become cumbersome when you have to take quick notes and the nib can dry out if you don't cap it properly. The Pilot Metropolitan would've been perfect, save for the miniscule ink capacity.

It is not a Mont Blanc fountain pen. It is an inexpensive fountain pen. It has good size and fits in my hand well. It is light for its size. I’ve officially entered the fountain pen world today, with the Pilot Metropolitan Fine being my first pen and it’s been great! I’m hoping to fill this case (Levenger Point of View Case - Dark Cherry) over the next several years.

They don't leak and will survive a mild fall. If something catastrophic happens, it's not a huge financial liability either. I use a Pilot Metro at work and I see quite a few Lamy's in people's scrub pockets.

Its a fantastic pen, I'm keeping it. But it arrived with a messy, exploded ink cartridge. Got ink everywhere. can't really use the case now because it's soaked in ink. It works still and writes Amazingly. I'll never use a regular pen again. but huge bummer that it arrives damaged. You need to order ...
