 Uh, the only thing it was was a $200 heart rate monitor watch when I purchased this and it didn't even do that for me accurately so accurately. So it was very expensive. If it did read my heart rate correctly, I would have kept it. but unfortunately I'm gonna have to return it to the Apple Store and I don't think it really is ready for prime time yet

 It's a very comfortable watch just wearing it like this now. Unfortunately, when I wore it during my Ddp yoga session, I needed not only to have it far up on my forearm, almost away from my wrist so I can do all the positions and everything, but also when I took it off, it was very, very tight. During the whole session, I needed to have it tight for the heart rate monitoring portion in order to get a reading at all. I had to have it very tight

 If it did read my heart rate correctly, I would have kept it. but unfortunately I'm gonna have to return it to the Apple Store and I don't think it really is ready for prime time yet. I don't think version one of this is doing a good enough job, at least not for my heart rate monitor needs and I'll have to go back to using the chest strap or maybe even an E Pulse 2 which actually goes up further on your forearm. That might be a good solution for me, but this is something I had hoped would have worked out for me and 199 dollars, it's definitely not worth that price to me at least

 This is the unique feature of the Mio Alpha and the reason why you do not need a chest strap. It uses Led lights and you can see here. It's also bluetooth low energy and Bluetooth Smart compatible to work with apps on your iphone 4s5 and other bluetooth low energy devices, but the little light sensors here actually bounce off of your wrist and that's how you get your heart rate with these little things right here. So it really great in theory, but in practice you'll see doesn't necessarily hold up to what they're promising, so a little spoiler there

Mio Alpha Review

 This means I have to have my phone with my during ANY activities in order to track my behavior  Tons of potential with how comfortable and sleek the Mio is, but right now, it's just an expensive heart monitor. I don't want to wear a chest strap, so the Mio is a good alternative, but not at $150 or more.

Good - Could be Better

 I don't want to go into the technical details about it. Just go onto their website if you want to learn about how it works, but basically you put the watch on and it senses your heart rate through your wrist, which I thought that's pretty cool. So I'm in Calgary right now. This is December and it's pretty cold out, so I took it for a couple of tests

 And so when I'm doing a workout in the basement like that, that's great. Now the other thing I don't do, and don't get all mad at me about this guys, is I'm not an iPhone app kind of guy. So I'm not going to go out there, I'm not going to be running with my phone and connect this to my watch. I think it does have an app you can do that, but for me I want to be as limited as possible when I'm running

 I get kind of picky that way. The other thing too is, again, I took both of these watches out for the test run and before I even headed out the door, I was getting kind of skeptical. I know that the night before I had the Mio on and at nighttime I was cuddling with my son and it doesn't have a light. And so when I'm outside, I know that it gets dark here around five o'clock and I went for the run just before five and I thought, there's no way this thing is going to work

 This one, not so much. But if you're looking for a watch that tells you your heart rate and that's all you need to know, well then this is fantastic. Especially if you're running during the day and where it's warm out, you don't have to have layers of clothes on. Okay, so then I did a test down in the basement

Mio Alpha Heart Rate monitor review

This product measures heart rate accurately during a steady-state run, but is falls apart during interval training. You can't use this device to measure your recovery time, HR response time, or to do HR interval training because it loses track of your heart rate when you cycle between activities.  Another thing that sucks is that the device presses down on your wrist pretty tightly, and the sensor module leaves a mark on your wrist. I personally couldn't wear it for loner than 15 minutes before I was dying to take it off my wrist, and when I did, it left a sore (literally broken skin) on my wrist

Nice when running at steady speed, bad for interval training

 Now, this is lacking some of the more advanced features that some of these super watches may have like GPS or call or text notifications and so I feel like it's price of $199 is a little bit unjustified. I Feel like that's a little bit high for what it's offering. That being said, I Don't know if there's a better heart rate tracker that is risk-based as of right now, which is January 2015.  It comes with a magnetic USB charger that just magnetically attaches to the back of the device and you can see how wide it is. much wider than the Mio fuse which is the all day tracker. Now as we'll see I think that that width lends itself to it being a very accurate heart rate monitor. The Alpha 2 does have a really nice feature where you can double tap the screen to activate the backlight which is great if you're jogging at night or if you want to tap the screen in the middle of the night to see what time it is now

The Mio Alpha 2 released here in January of 2015 is a continuation of the Mio Alpha, the original sport watch with its main feature being heart rate monitoring from the wrist and you can see that optical heart rate there. aesthetically. it's a very sporty looking watch, so if you're looking for more of a classy device, you're probably going to want to stay away from this now

 Now, the straps are made out of the same synthetic material that the Mio Fuse straps are made out, of, which really grip the skin nicely. They kind of have this texture, these holes through on the band itself that really grip your skin and I think that that wide band really helps it stick to the skin, which helps it get that good optical heart rate reading. However, for me, that's where the build quality ended. I Felt like the rest of the device felt fairly cheap

 I also went 2 weeks with active use and still had 66% battery. The price is only justified due to the fact that it is the only continuous strapless heart rate monitor. Since it has bluetooth, the need for gps and other features would not be so important if there were more apps that work with this device. Overall good device, hopefully more app support will eventually justify the price

I have been using this for 2 weeks now with the insanity workout. Heart rate is accurate and easy. Feels comfortable to wear but need to be tighten for accurate reading. Also a nice looking watch

Very Good product but limited

 This ban really wouldn't mean much to you then, but for those who are more fitness focused already know their sleeping habits, watches their food intake, or really doesn't need an all day tracker, but a tracker for those specific moments of running while valuing accuracy, this ban is the right one for you. Not to mention this is one of the few bans on the market that you can actually swim with at this price range. So in the end, just like the Mio Fuse, for what it does, it does great for the average consumer. Is it enough? Let me know in the comments below

 Now the band itself is wide and of course this is subjective, but the size looks fine in my opinion. It's about an inch and a half wide and just a little bit bigger than the Fitbit Surge. Now this is a latch style band which does hold securely during runs and normal daily routines. But one thing that I say is flawed though is at the end of the strap

Mio Alpha 2 - REVIEW

 Mio tech support suggested I widen the range of numbers for high and low, which defeats the purpose of the device telling you if your heart rate is too high or too low. There are lights that indicate high and low performance. They would be sufficient for indicating when you are in the target zone, if only you could turn off the beep during the cardio function.  The watch does not have a back-light

 I'll try a paper clip or something to prevent it from detaching.  In spite of finding another problem I increased my rating to 2 stars. Though the advertised feature mentioned above is annoying with the beeps, it is extremely convenient to be able to see my heart rate at a glance instead of holding my wrist and doing the math.

I purchased my Alpha from the manufacturer before it was available on Amazon.  Pros: The heart rate monitor works great. The idea of a chest strap was annoying and this eliminates that problem. If that is the reason you purchase an Alpha, and that is the only time you will wear it, then you may be happy with it

 And I'm wearing my Mio Alpha heart rate monitor watch. I started the hike, my heart rate was about 80-85 beats per minute. And I'm going to move the camera around just so you can see what I got. Right now I'm at about 158, 157, 159

 I will say this, it is very, very comfortable. Alright, so now it's found my heart rate and it's showing that, turn my light back on. Heart rate's down to about 98 beats per second, 97, 96, 95. This sucker during testing was about 99% accurate when running at speeds just above 14 miles an hour

 So basically what it does is it senses the volume of blood under your skin and measures your heart rate based on that. Very similar to when you get that fingertip one at the hospital or the doctor. They just put that on there to measure your heart rate, same thing. Very similar to like an EKG and it does have about the same accuracy apparently according to the website

 The strap is really, really soft. It has this siliconized, I don't even know if that's a word, but silicon coated strap. Very, very comfortable. It does have a little right there

I did get a Polar FT2 (watch + chest monitor) and did the same exercise routine with the MIO on one hand and the Polar on the other. My results showed the MIO match the Polar heart measurement 70% of the time, the other 30% the MIO varied too much to be considered accurate or reasonable for the amount of exercise I was doing (during that 30% of the time exercising, it varied back and forth between 89 and 139 within minutes, where the Polar kept a steady range of 125 - 129).  Others have noted a lack of features (like backlit screen) for the cost of this product and I would have to agree with them on the price/feature is excessive
