 30 inch scale we have 22 frets and then two pickups diamond nickel model. So as you can see one is very close to the neck and the other one it's in the middle so we have a particular sound which is indeed from the 60s and then we have a wonderful ebony bridge and regarding electronic we have two volumes for each pickup and then we have a slide for the rhythm solo which basically cut the amount of the treble tone and to a degree the volume in the rhythm position and then we have two more switches and basically when you push the slide switch to bass on actually turns off the middle pickup and pushing the other slide switch to treble on it will turn off the neck pickup. So even if I played Count Together by the Beatles at the beginning of this video well I must say this bass is it's not just to play Beatles but you can play pop rock and a lot of different music so for example this is the the middle pickup so very punchy and I like it a lot of course it has the sound of the 60s and this is the neck pickup both pickups and of course on this bass flat boom strings are loaded so if you put different type of strings you can get many different tones so now I'm gonna play a song from my band Italians which is called Robert Palmer I hope you enjoyed this video and thanks for watching goodbye my girl works in a New York grocery store mom and dad are left behind she and I are doing fine when I come home drunk she makes me sleep on the floor I like Robert Palmer he dresses like my father only better I don't think I can take it anymore her sister's staying and it's really busting my balls she says we can't do it she can hear us through the walls I get home I'm feeling tired all I want is some peace and quiet but they're watching Brad Pitt and Legends of the Fall I like Robert Palmer not some girl in drama I don't think I can shake it I don't think I can make it I don't think I can take it anymore

I asked a while back what people were really GASing for so decided to flip it on its head!

For me its a rickenbacker, tried a few and just can't get on with em. Dont like how they feel to play at all but the producer I recorded with recently stated 'people don't play ricks for how they feel'.

What bass do you have absolutely no interest in owning and why?

I've asked this on here before but it's a fun topic to revisit.

What are the worst neck diving basses (or leads) you've ever played or owned? 

For basses I have had a BC Rich Mockingbird and currently own a Jackson Kelly Bird. Both comically bad neck divers. I play bass with a pick too, so I don't have a thumb anchored on a pick up to help either. 

Both those basses sound great. I sold the Mockingbird but the Kelly is my current 'main' bass. I've packed the electronics box so full of lead that the bass now weighs more than a battleship-- and it still wants to dive but it's not so bad now. Like old Rics look at the Kelly and say it needs a diet.   
Without the lead in it the thing dives so hard the strap pulled my shirt up to my shoulder. (i also use a tackier leather strap-- all the 'tricks' for neck divers)

Love the sound, but until I loaded it with an anchor's worth of weight it was unplayable standing up. I had to hold it up with my fretting hand 100% of the time. Everything became a slide.....lol. 

The Mockingbird was about as bad. Another bass that sounded like thunder, but tried to hide it's head like an ostrich. It forces me to cheat and use my forearm on the body which is just bad form. 

Because I am addicted to oddly shaped guitars, this is a curse I am afflicted with all too often. I have three lead guitars, all of them without a horn over the 12th fret. Of course leads don't dive as much as basses, but it's the price we pay for indulging my inner 14 year old that likes pointy guitars.....

Neck Divers-- worst offenders list

 And it feels like a proper violin bass as well, it's totally hollow, which is pretty insane. We've had some 5 grand Hofner basses here at PMT, and to be fair, they do feel awfully awfully similar. This is made overseas though, not made in Germany. It's got a spruce top, a flame maple back and sides, Hofner Ignition staple pickups, a lovely wooden bridge here, and a trapeze tailpiece

 And the funky control panel, which come on violin basses. Each pickup has its own volume, there's a solo and rhythm switch, which boosts the signal when it's in rhythm, the signal is slightly attenuated, attenuated means quietened, made quieter. And the way these work is, bass and treble on, when they're on, it turns off the other pickup, so if both of these switches are on, there's no sound. So when the bass is on, it turns off the treble pickup, when the treble's on, it turns off the bass pickup

 This is made overseas though, not made in Germany. It's got a spruce top, a flame maple back and sides, Hofner Ignition staple pickups, a lovely wooden bridge here, and a trapeze tailpiece. Lovely C-shaped maple neck, it fits in your hand just fantastically. Rosewood fretboard, it is a 30 inch scale bass, so it's a little bit shorter, nice mother of pearl tuners up top

 And the way these work is, bass and treble on, when they're on, it turns off the other pickup, so if both of these switches are on, there's no sound. So when the bass is on, it turns off the treble pickup, when the treble's on, it turns off the bass pickup. What's funky as well, when the bass is on, it adds an extra capacitor as if a tone control was turned down. You kind of get a lovely, mellow, Hoffner violin bass vibe

Heyo, I'm a complete newbie to bass. Sometimes on and off, I live in a small town where there are no teachers so it's all on me and the good ole internet.

Recently, I think my bass is too big. I'm 5'2 and I have to stretch to reach the notes closest to the nut. As well as, for the first like 5 notes. I have to open my hand extremely wide. I had some family say that I need more practice but. . . 

I basically have to open my hand like I'm a toddler who just learned how to wave goodbye or a child showing you they're 5yld. You know, fingers spread out to the max with a small curl to reach my strings. With my fingers spread, I can now BARELY cover the notes that I'm supposed to. And it's a bit harder to hit the E string.

Is my bass too big or do I just need more time? I was thinking of getting a smaller one.

I think my bass is too big?

 If you keep moving on, it has a floating bridge, now this bridge adjusts up and down and will apparently move backwards and forwards. I wouldn't want to try sort of moving it around too much but you can do that. The string tree and tailpiece is classic Hofner and is the same as all of their violin basses and of course the pickguard that is well known and makes it sort of outstanding and you'd recognise it straight away as a Hofner. In terms of electronics, well it comes with what Hofner would describe as Hofner's Ignition Series staple pickups and I guess that's Hofner's way of saying they're made in China

 In terms of build, well it's a maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, spruce top, flame maple sides and back and it's finished in this vintage sunburst. The materials are exactly the same as those used in the German instruments, although quality of the material I suppose is something that you could kind of question. But still looks really great and if you were to look for any blemishes, you'd be hard pressed to find anything particularly outstanding on it. So I'd probably give it an 8 or 9 out of 10 in terms of build quality

 I'll probably look at changing the strings on this at some point. Like I said, I don't mind the round wound strings, I think they kind of give it a bit of a modern edge to it. But certainly changing them around to la bella or diadarios or something along those kind of lines will make a difference. Other than that, look, there's nothing else that you really need to do it and it's certainly not a toy or something you would just hang on the wall and have as a sort of a gimmicky show thing

 It is hollow bodied, short scaled, 22 frets but if you're a smaller player or smaller fingers or just like something that's lighter and something you don't have to kind of hang around your neck or the weight of a solid body instrument then you'll probably find just a great instrument to play. It's fun to play, it's more like playing a guitar than just playing a bass and that's one of the things I really like about it and I can kind of see why McCartney probably would have liked using it. The terms of the control system, well you can kind of see here you've got these two volume controls, so one for each pickup and then this set of sliders. You have a treble on, a bass on and what's called a rhythm solo switch

 The string tree and tailpiece is classic Hofner and is the same as all of their violin basses and of course the pickguard that is well known and makes it sort of outstanding and you'd recognise it straight away as a Hofner. In terms of electronics, well it comes with what Hofner would describe as Hofner's Ignition Series staple pickups and I guess that's Hofner's way of saying they're made in China. They're nickel plated as well. The control box is typical Hofner and really is that sort of quirky layout to volume controls and those series of switches

Hofner Violin. Semi-audible when not plugged in for easy practice, lightweight so it won't hurt my shoulder after extended playing live or otherwise, and a thinner next and shorter scale for my small hands.

If you could only use ONE bass for the rest of your life what would you pick and why?

 Hofner Ignition Violin Bass -- $400 (Too ugly and wimpy.). Haven't gotten to try the G&L Fallout yet, or the Danelectro 59DC. But the first one is way too expensive, and the second one is way too ugly imo

Epiphone EB0 -- $300 (Incredibly heavy for a short scale, neck dive.). Hofner Ignition Violin Bass -- $400 (Too ugly and wimpy.)

So, I've been looking into purchasing my first bass. I have no previous experience with stringed instruments (I play piano tho), but I'm well aware that my hands are quite small, and I assume that might cause me some technical challenges. That said, I know that standard-sized basses are way more common and if I ever decide to upgrade from a newbie instrument, I assume there are probably less options (or at least less budget-friendly ones) for a short scale bass than a standard one. So what should I do, should I purchase a short-scale or standard sized bass as my first instrument? Thanks in advance!

 However, all that being said, these are just nitpicks. Because on the whole, this bass really is a great bang for your buck. Now personally speaking, the first thing I recommend anyone doing when purchasing this bass is take the round wound strings off straight away, and invest in a set of flat wound strings for that iconic Hoffner sound. The nickel pickups are very susceptible to scratches and tinny tones, which the round wound do not help at all

 And finally we have the rhythm slash solo switch, which is the closest thing you'll have to a tone control. Rhythm being slightly lower in volume and having less treble in the signal, whereas the solo option is brighter and louder comparatively. As I've previously mentioned, the Hoffner Ignition bass will set you back around £355, but before we dive into any thoughts and discussions, let's hear some more classic retro tones. At first glance the £355 price tag for a genuine Hoffner might be a little bit too good to be true

 Now personally speaking, the first thing I recommend anyone doing when purchasing this bass is take the round wound strings off straight away, and invest in a set of flat wound strings for that iconic Hoffner sound. The nickel pickups are very susceptible to scratches and tinny tones, which the round wound do not help at all. The second thing to do, if you so wish, is to take a Phillips screwdriver and just slightly raise the height of the front pickup so that it matches the height of the bridge pickup. Both pickups output at almost an identical level, so why the front pickup is so low is beyond me

 As I've previously mentioned, the Hoffner Ignition bass will set you back around £355, but before we dive into any thoughts and discussions, let's hear some more classic retro tones. At first glance the £355 price tag for a genuine Hoffner might be a little bit too good to be true. And in one sense of the word, it is true. This bass in particular falls under a branch of the Hoffner company that in respect is what Epiphone is to Gibson

I’m starting to get better and I want to start considering upgrading my bass. I’m working w a cheap Ibanez (not sure which model) and an Ampeg BA115. I’ve been looking at the Ibanez AGB200. I really like the way it looks and feel like the additional acoustic tone from a semi-hollow body might be something I’m interested in. I’m not really sure what tone I’m looking for but I like JPJ’s tone in Dazed and Confused and the band I’m trying to play with does pop punk and kinda folksy covers with a lot of harmonies. Any opinions/tips/warnings/advice on the Ibanez AGB200 or other options to look at, thanks.
